Discovered composers & publishers of music themes

Many people often associate the theme from KIRO's News Out of the Box era as a composition by Gerard Schwarz. It is not. Although the Seattle Symphony recorded the theme package under Schwarz as conductor, the themes were composed by Mark Haffner, as shown in this newspaper report from the Morning News Tribune:

Haffner would later compose the more traditional News Now package, used during the NewsChannel 7 era, and which had the same sonic logo as the News Out of the Box package.

Did not know that, probably simply because we didn't have a lot of KSL from that era (and I believe we are still missing an open generation from 1992–93).

KSFY-TV in Sioux City also used the theme as well.

Several years ago, ESPN Classic aired a number of old SportsCenter broadcasts in honor of ESPN's anniversary. Just recently, I came across an old broadcast from ESPN's infancy which featured of all things, slow pitch softball. The video, by the way, is courtesy of Andy Wenzel who, if I am not mistaken, recorded these games that aired back in 1979.

So, I want you all to take a listen to this video and listen at 21:29, because it features a few seconds of a cut from the first ESPN music package.

NOTE: The theme at 21:29 was also used to close out a SportsCenter broadcast during this period.

I share this video, because it begs me the question: Who in the world composed the first ESPN music package?

Just chiming in on this thread. Actually, I composed and produced music for 5 Seattle market TV stations at the same time which all ran concurrently.

KOMO TV

KING TV

KIRO TV

KTZZ TV

KCPQ TV

None of the stations were aware I had done most all of their competitors. This is the first mention of it. There were other stations added to the list. WTVD, WTNH, KOVR, WIXT, KDFW and a few others. Thank you for the info. posted on this site.

Thanks for posting, Dan. I think every single person who has said something in this thread (including myself) would say we really appreciate your work. I don't know of anyone else who had that many concurrent campaigns on the air in the same market. A lot of craft goes into making all that work, and this thread exists because we want to recognize the people that produced it. :)

Thanks for stopping by Dan - really enjoyed your early KOMO work just from coming across it here and I didn't even live in Seattle to hear it as broadcast.

Nice funk to it, a little playfulness, and urgent without being in your face. Still holds up well today.

I'd be curious about what the station feedback was, how they decided on changing things up, and what input / inspiration went into the work.

.......any intel on who would've handled WBAY's "2 Power" campaign? I'm suspecting it to be a Klein& job, but a little browsing back in this thread gave some mention of Peters working with them at one time.

@ChesapeakeTVand I are pretty much in agreement. It's Peters. When you see full-page newspaper ads like this with copy like this... Who else could it possibly be?

Peters LOVED flowery newspaper ads. I had already clipped three of these for KOLN/KGIN (10/11 Strong debuted 1977), KMST (It's a Must, used 1991–92), and WTXL (This is Our Place from 1984), and I was able to nab another five from WEAR Clearly Yours (1979), WXLT 40 is Yours (1980), KVIA 7 Together (1983), WQAD One Quad-City (1984), and WSPA In the Center of it All (1990).

Putting the newspaper ad together with this clip of WEAR from 1980, does make their "Clearly Yours" campaign a work of Peters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpy8lJYqx64

The guy in the newspaper ad was Tom Scanlan, and the anchor in the newsbreak was Peter Neumann.  Both of them were involved in the founding of WGTU/WGTQ in Traverse City/Sault St. Marie as well as WBKB in Alpena several years later.  They must have "flown south" to Pensacola soon after.  Neumann served as WEAR's news director until 2006 and later finished out his career at WPTA in Fort Wayne.

After Pensacola, Scanlan also founded WBKP & WBUP in Marquette. Sadly, Tom Scanlan passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer.

Dan, just wondering, which KDFW theme did you do, and when?

Remember that theme Hawaii News Now (KGMB/KHNL) used from 2009 to 2014? Someone posted it to the NMSA recently and it's a production music track! The name of the song is "Sunrise" by Video Helper (track #59 from the album "Overkill").

Did KFMB in San Diego use "The One & Only" by Klein &? I was watching the tribute to Michael Tuck and heard this nugget at :39. (Listen closely!)
