Discovered composers & publishers of music themes

Many people often associate the theme from KIRO's News Out of the Box era as a composition by Gerard Schwarz. It is not. Although the Seattle Symphony recorded the theme package under Schwarz as conductor, the themes were composed by Mark Haffner, as shown in this newspaper report from the Morning News Tribune:

Haffner would later compose the more traditional News Now package, used during the NewsChannel 7 era, and which had the same sonic logo as the News Out of the Box package.

Did not know that, probably simply because we didn't have a lot of KSL from that era (and I believe we are still missing an open generation from 1992–93).

KSFY-TV in Sioux City also used the theme as well.

Several years ago, ESPN Classic aired a number of old SportsCenter broadcasts in honor of ESPN's anniversary. Just recently, I came across an old broadcast from ESPN's infancy which featured of all things, slow pitch softball. The video, by the way, is courtesy of Andy Wenzel who, if I am not mistaken, recorded these games that aired back in 1979.

So, I want you all to take a listen to this video and listen at 21:29, because it features a few seconds of a cut from the first ESPN music package.

NOTE: The theme at 21:29 was also used to close out a SportsCenter broadcast during this period.

I share this video, because it begs me the question: Who in the world composed the first ESPN music package?

Just chiming in on this thread. Actually, I composed and produced music for 5 Seattle market TV stations at the same time which all ran concurrently.

KOMO TV

KING TV

KIRO TV

KTZZ TV

KCPQ TV

None of the stations were aware I had done most all of their competitors. This is the first mention of it. There were other stations added to the list. WTVD, WTNH, KOVR, WIXT, KDFW and a few others. Thank you for the info. posted on this site.

Thanks for posting, Dan. I think every single person who has said something in this thread (including myself) would say we really appreciate your work. I don't know of anyone else who had that many concurrent campaigns on the air in the same market. A lot of craft goes into making all that work, and this thread exists because we want to recognize the people that produced it. :)

Thanks for stopping by Dan - really enjoyed your early KOMO work just from coming across it here and I didn't even live in Seattle to hear it as broadcast.

Nice funk to it, a little playfulness, and urgent without being in your face. Still holds up well today.

I'd be curious about what the station feedback was, how they decided on changing things up, and what input / inspiration went into the work.

.......any intel on who would've handled WBAY's "2 Power" campaign? I'm suspecting it to be a Klein& job, but a little browsing back in this thread gave some mention of Peters working with them at one time.

@ChesapeakeTVand I are pretty much in agreement. It's Peters. When you see full-page newspaper ads like this with copy like this... Who else could it possibly be?

Peters LOVED flowery newspaper ads. I had already clipped three of these for KOLN/KGIN (10/11 Strong debuted 1977), KMST (It's a Must, used 1991–92), and WTXL (This is Our Place from 1984), and I was able to nab another five from WEAR Clearly Yours (1979), WXLT 40 is Yours (1980), KVIA 7 Together (1983), WQAD One Quad-City (1984), and WSPA In the Center of it All (1990).

Putting the newspaper ad together with this clip of WEAR from 1980, does make their "Clearly Yours" campaign a work of Peters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpy8lJYqx64

The guy in the newspaper ad was Tom Scanlan, and the anchor in the newsbreak was Peter Neumann.  Both of them were involved in the founding of WGTU/WGTQ in Traverse City/Sault St. Marie as well as WBKB in Alpena several years later.  They must have "flown south" to Pensacola soon after.  Neumann served as WEAR's news director until 2006 and later finished out his career at WPTA in Fort Wayne.

After Pensacola, Scanlan also founded WBKP & WBUP in Marquette. Sadly, Tom Scanlan passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer.

Remember that theme Hawaii News Now (KGMB/KHNL) used from 2009 to 2014? Someone posted it to the NMSA recently and it's a production music track! The name of the song is "Sunrise" by Video Helper (track #59 from the album "Overkill").

hey, first time, long time, etc. Posting this here for lack of a better place to put this.

With Pat Callaghan's retirement, WCSH posted a bunch of old clips this week, including this image campaign (2:05 mark).

Anyone have an ID on name/composer? Sounds vaguely familiar but can't find it on the NMSA.

New clip from WXFL (WFLA) circa April 3, 1983 less than 3 months after the call letter change with either a different theme or different cuts of Gari’s The Spirit of Tampa Bay. I don’t think these cuts lasted very long and the station changed graphics 4 or 5 times over the course of over 3 years between The Look….Alive and Power News to stay ahead of WTSP for #2.

News update at 21:12 and tease at 35:35. Again no open.

Recently found this on the NMSA, A clean cut of the "KNTV 1985 News Theme". I'm aware this theme was used on some stations (KNTV, KGMB, Including the 1984 WDVM/WUSA Test Opens) but I'm curious to see as to where the original source of this sound bite came from.

Correction from a post I did some weeks back theorizing about the possible origins of the KTXL/WRAL early 80s music package: Cascom most certainly did not do the WRAL 1982 animations. I was re-reading a Millimeter back issue in my personal collection, and was reminded that I had already seen stills from the WRAL '82 animation package in an ad for Bill Feigenbaum's studio (which was based in NYC). Just wanted to put that here.

As to that WTVX package, I still think it could have been done in Dallas. (KHTV's music image package in the "39 Gold" period - which, as you say, didn't have corresponding news music - also sounds to have been done in Dallas. I swear it sounds like the late Chris Kershaw on solo vocals, but whether it was done by JAM, or he did it independently, I have no idea. Also I don't think I've heard a version that wasn't camcorded off a TV, as most of the YT clips I've seen of that period were.)

You called it. It's a JAM custom for WJAR.

Ben Atkins is at it again.

There is a lot here, so it's worth unpacking — I had to go deep diving into Back Stage once more!

Editel/Boston was established in 1988 when Scanline (which had Editel studio companies in other cities) acquired Century III Teleproductions, which had offices in Boston and Orlando. Century III was a prolific producer of music, animation (through its Digital Images division), and other design/media services in New England. The fact that Ben has labeled this Editel tells me the tape was possibly compiled in 1988, but the material in it seems to be more 1987.

The notable things on here are:

  • An image package for WVIT, "Connecticut's NBC Station", and (at 10:07) the WVIT 1987 theme from when they rebranded as Connecticut News, titled here as "The News". I believe the actual launch date for both of these is in 1986; the image and logo debuted in June, and the news theme debuted when Toby Moffett joined WVIT in November.
  • An image package for WGOT in New Hampshire, which would be from its launch in August 1987.
  • A syndicated news package titled Window on the World, better known in the NMSA as WDEF 1987. This is credited to "CIII Audio" (took a fair amount of digging to realize why C3 turned up no hits).
  • A sung image set for WCVB, titled "Tune to the Ears, Tune to the Eyes".
  • The open music adopted by the Boston Red Sox on WSBK in 1987, dubbed here as "Target". Digital Images produced this open.
  • "Latitudes", a syndicated music and graphics package for independent stations produced for WXIN in 1987. WGNT, KMSS, KWKT, and other stations used elements from this.

We know that in 1987, CIII Audio launched syndicated music packages through Digital Images to sell to stations, first shown at the BPME/BDA conference in Atlanta, and that they did customs for WVIT, WLVI, WCVB, and WNEV in just that time period. (This opens up some really unusual Pandora's boxes: WCVB 87? WNEV 87 + KCBS?) Their staff composer was an Evie Nelson.

Digital Images was no slouch. They did work for WCVB, WBTV (the 1986 city map flyover open), WTTG (Forty Years Together, Channel 5 and You), WHCT (their Right Now image from the 1985 relaunch), and the animation for WTVJ's 1988 overhaul, and for Showtime and the Discovery Channel.
