Good Morning America

TV3, the studio space that GMA Weekend and WNT broadcasts from, is undergoing a renovation. That’s why last weekend’s Good Morning America aired from Times Square and it’s why WNT has been in a small, temporary set the last few days. This has nothing to do with ABC’s move downtown in 4 years.

This was also the reason why George anchored the Impeachment coverage from the GMA set at TSS (instead of TV3) last week too.

I guess they're taking advantage of the new kidvid rules.

From Variety, GMA Saturday is expanding to two hours for a good chunk of its affiliates beginning next week.

Looking at the guides, the two hours won't be together. For example:

  • WABC will air the first hour at 8am, then the second hour at 10am/ET.
  • WLS will air the first hour at 7am, then the second hour at 10am/CT.

Small follow-up. Looks like some of the other stations that haven't carried the second hour, will carry it beginning January 4th.

  • KABC will air the second hour at 9am (the first hour is aired twice at 4am (LIVE) & 7am/PT).
  • KGO will carry the full two hours straight through from 7-9am (they're bumping the 8am local news to 9am/PT).
  • WSB will carry the two hours from 9-11am (right after their 6-9am/ET local news).
  • WFAA will carry the two hours from 6-8am (LIVE) (bumping the local news by one hour from 8-10am).
  • WISN will carry the second hour at 9am (they already carry the first hour at 6am/CT (LIVE)).

Hope they keep GMA weekend in Times Square. Never understood why they broadcast from the WNT studio. They did the weekend show from Times Square for years (Namely the Bill Weir/Kate Snow era)

This morning, GMA celebrated Robin's 30th anniversary with ESPN/ABC (they grouped it as Disney, which is untrue), and while I love me some Robin Roberts, the special guests were the highlights.

It's Disney's policy to count years of service to an acquired company as Disney service -- Bob Iger for instance celebrated 45 years at "Disney" last year even though the first ~20 years were at ABC/Cap Cities ABC.

Strahan spoke to NYT about, among other things, his botched exit from LIVE.  He clearly thinks Kelly was out of line.

Michael surely made some mistakes, but so much of this is rooted in Kelly's insecurities. Almost a decade later, she's still convinced that Regis left the show, in some part, because of her. He was 80 years old, at the time. He was just ready to go.

Oh damn guess I was wrong. So then all the talk about ABC making LIVE part of the GMA family at some point is not completely outlandish.

Not completely outlandish, no. Only ALMOST completely outlandish.

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in Out & About, but ABC has suspended another correspondent, in another incident where Disney effectively cowed to bad actors on the right. David Wright has been suspended for comments he made criticizing ABC's incorporation of promotions for Disney's movies and TV shows in some of its news programs (notably citing Good Morning America, though this is also used to a point on World News Now, America This Morning, Nightline and occasionally on WNT) as well as how ABC covers politics in a superficial way. Project Veritas, a right-wing group known for "undercover" videos trying to expose alleged liberal bias in media, filmed Wright making these comments, in which he also identified as a socialist.

There are two issues: one, Veritas has been discredited for use of unsubstantiated claims, "gotcha" journalism and selective editing, therefore, suspending Wright effectively gives them legitimacy; two, it appears this was a case of Disney not respecting Wright's opinions of how news should be done. And, he has a point about the promotion blending thing. NBC and CBS don't do that to the level ABC does, and both those networks are also owned by major media conglomerates (NBCUniversal/Comcast and ViacomCBS). I've been an ABC News viewer for years, but they clearly blundered here.

Yikes, I can't see David Wright returning to ABC. Those were damaging comments, you don't bite from the hand that feeds you, even if it's coming from a Mouse feeding you cheese.  Sorry, but if you want to stick with hardcore citizen journalism and truly make a difference, make your own YouTube channel and podcast. The current media landscape is all about synergy, you drink the Kool-Ade that they give you, if you don't like it and don't want to share airtime with The Bachelor and shopping deals and steals, it's time to move on.  At the same time, off the record comments from those in the journalism community should be kept to a minimum in this day and age, you will be recorded for juicy soundbites. You're a journalist, don't talk about your personal life and ideologies.

Even if it was against his employer, Wright had every right to speak his mind on how news and synergy should be done these days. And his opinion is right on the money. ABC is always promoting their reality shows on GMA and the overnight shows to a near extreme and - to be honest in my opinion - annoying extent. Yes, GMA is a morning show but when people want the hard news straight for an hour - and not after a live tease of DWTS or The Bachelor/Bachelorette or five, I think they should tone it down a bit.

I don't think Wright will be back on ABC soon after his suspension. If so, he deserves better elsewhere. If they take him back, that'll be a shock - but great all the same.

I'm open to criticizing the other Big 3 networks for this too. They do this a lot too, but their cross-promoting is normal In comparison. ABC has lost its mind if they put their promotion practices over their journalists, and them giving Veritas a easy win is utterly embarrassing twofold.

Project Veritas is a joke. Simply put. Everything they do ruins journalists at the wrong times with the hidden camera/gotcha crap, when they could've caught journalism at its worst and received genuine praise for their efforts if their political bias wasn't on their sleeves.

BTW, for those not familiar with the other “bad actor” incident referred to in the post, James Gunn was fired by Disney from his role as director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films in 2018 for past tweets that joked about things such as rape, paedophilia and child abuse, uncovered by Mike Cernovich, an alt-righter who tried to paint several Trump critics as “pedophiles,” even though he was charged (though not convicted) of sexual assault himself years prior. Gunn was reinstated by Disney a year later.

David Wright is back apparently. Just saw a report filed by him at the end of WNT.

George Stephanopoulos revealed on GMA Monday morning that he has tested positive for the coronavirus. He states, however, that he is currently asymptomatic and only has experienced mild symptoms: what he described as back pain that he thought was due to strenuous exercise and, for a time, a relatively diminished sense of smell.

George had been working from home since his wife, Alexandra Wentworth, tested positive a few weeks ago, with somewhat more severe symptoms. (IIRC, when he discussed Alexandra’s diagnosis last month, he said he, at the time, didn’t use masks or other precautionary measures when tending to her. Apparently since then, he had started to do so; it should be noted that he is one year shy of the age group of highest complication risk [yes, he’s 59!].)
