Business network ratings at 20-year-low

From the Wall Street Journal (search "Ratings Sag for Cable-TV Business News"):

In the third quarter, CNBC hit a 20-year ratings low, and in the last five years, average total daytime viewership has fallen by more than half. Fox Business Network isn't meeting expectations. And Bloomberg is rethinking its TV channel business, "having failed to turn a profit or draw more than 10% of the audience for TV business news despite being on the air for nearly two decades, according to people familiar with the matter."

The WSJ cites the institutionalization and algorithmization of trading as an additional contributing factor to the decline, as well as the old "online competitors" thing.

Luckily for ratings, Nielsen can be fickle (it doesn't get out-of-home viewing, which is so common with CNBC, very well), and so CNBC has at least had a minimal impact on financial performance from the declining ratings. That said, its new primetime lineup hasn't been doing well, actually leading to declining ratings.
