It’s silly…just go back to “Channel 3 News.”

One notable thing is Sara Shookman’s sharp decline in having any sort of presence here. As recently as 2018, she was the main anchor and now has been relegated to 7pm - and gets pushed out by Christi Paul and Carmen Blackwell.

Sara Shookman is on maternity leave. The station even covered the birth of her second child. I don’t think anyone’s getting pushed out here.

Also, I don’t like WKYC’s format either, but it’s not like Dave Lougee and Tegna issued an edict that WKYC must change their newscasts. While Tegna management certainly encouraged this stuff, these moves were made entirely by local management.

Why can't it just be 3 News at 5:00, just like its 6pm news?

You’re talking about a station that used to be a NBC O&O. The O&O glory days (before the TEGNAization) are on the backroads…

I think those ridiculous titles need to go.  3 seems like they want to bring in TikTok-friendly and big name personalities on board as opposed to the kind of staff they had before the big change of '19.

I don't think there was ever a time when they were an O&O when they were a market force.  Most of the 60s when they were Westinghouse was more notable before WEWS found their footing.  It wasnt until the late 90s under Gannett when they finally began winning timeslots and cemented their place in the 2000s as WEWS was sinking in the ratings...

WKYC's newfound dominance also came when WJW was starting to regain its footing after a period of struggle following the 1994 network switch.  WEWS would further sink after WOIO debuted its Action News format and became competitive.

Well, looks like I got that totally wrong then. In hindsight, they took her off the 6 even before maternity leave.

EDIT: And they didn’t hire Christi Paul for nothing either.

I tried watching some of the 4pm news yesterday and it was mostly fluff.  A piece on a pickle fest and some bit involving ice cream.  I couldn't get into it.

Yet, the 11pm news seems to be doing well.  A graphic at the end had it at number one.

News from Indianapolis: The WTHR Helipad is no more. Chopper 13 is said to have gone away around lockdown.

Why tear up a helipad even if it's dormant?! Knowing Tegna they'll just keep it a gravel pit because they can't afford to landscape it. 🙄

Looks like a metaphor for what TEGNA has done to WTHR (and WBNS for that matter) since taking over. The Dispatch stations are just SAD under TEGNA.

They're like radars. Nice toy to have for marketing purposes, but not a necessity.

Eh, radars are actually useful in dead zones, the problem is the stations with money to get one aren’t in dead zones lol.

Also, in OKC and LA helicopters are clutch.

When did OKC become such a hot spot for pursuits?? I’ve just noticed a ton of videos on YouTube from KOTV these last few months.

Radars have some utility. Storm chasers have absolutely none in most markets. They don’t have the skill to actually use them as they’re intended… but they look nice in promos and parades!

I was speaking more to helicopters during tornadoes but now that you mention it you’re right.
