TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion

ABC 7 Denver

Recommended Posts

From the Columbia Journal Review, it seems like TEGNA is going to continue to push "original" digital content and longer series features for their stations.

Tegna VP for News Ellen Crooke says the docuseries is an example of a new push by the company to emphasize investigations that not only expose problems, but also present solutions. The company is committed to freeing up investigative teams to do creative work that doesn’t fit traditional local TV molds, she says.

SN: I'd venture to say TEGNA's "cost-cutting" on personnel costs over the last couple of year is what's helping fund this foray.

A few weeks ago WCSH/WLBZ led its 11PM weekend newscasts with a multi-part feature on how to prevent house break-ins produced by KGW. A sign of things to come, it would appear.
People are more aware of cities in the us outside of their own than they were 20 years ago. Dont blame Tegna. Ok, blame them for Tegnitis, but blame the internet more for changing things so that we get info asap instead of waiting until the 6 o'clock news like we would've had to 20 years ago.

Apparently, TEGNA and Cox (the cable TV division) are about to go through a retrans battle -- the "Cox Customers Click Here" banner is up on station pages saying their retrans consent agreement ends at 11:59 on January 13, 2017:

Unfortunately, so far Cox has refused to reach a fair, market-based agreement with us – even though the terms being offered are similar to those which allowed us to reach hundreds of deals with these other providers. If a deal is not reached by 11:59 pm EST on January 13, Cox subscribers could lose access to WVEC.

However, it only affects four stations out of their group: KPNX/Phoenix, WMAX/Macon, WWL/New Orleans and WVEC/Norfolk, so the lobbying efforts arent that big, yet.

UPDATE: Apparently, WUSA/Washington will also lose customers on the southern end of their market, albeit not in a large area. Apparently, all Fairfax County (excluding the city of Fairfax) is the only county in Northern VA where Comcast doesn't have a stranglehold or monopoly franchise agreement, and where Cox is the sole provider (sans satellite).

Yeesh... can't speak for the others, but that's a HUGE chunk of WVEC's viewing audience affected with Cox being the primary cable provider for six of the seven cities (Suffolk has Charter/Spectrum)

Fortunately, most of the 7 Cities also have a modicum of FiOS, plus a decent penetration of satellite TV as well. But, the reason you aren't seeing a BIG kerfuffle is because for the four markets affected, there is a (somewhat) reasonable alternative (other than satellite TV and OTA) because of Cox's low footprint nationwide.

NOLA would be the biggest loss by market and MVPD coverage -- Cox is the only provider (sans satellite) in New Orleans proper and most other areas south and east of Lake Ponchartrain.

Most of immediate Phoenix and the northern parts of the market have Centurylink as a competitor, as well as Mediacom w/ a small sliver too in eastern parts. Western parts (towards Vegas) have Frontier.

Macon is really the only one with no other MVPD in immediate area (Frontier and Mediacom are on the northern fringes). But even then -- Mediacom actually has a small sliver in some spots of Macon proper.

It's a big segment though, given Fairfax County is the most populous county in the Washington-Baltimore region. Also, the city of Fairfax is in Cox territory. It's the Reston region where Cox doesn't service. (Comcast does).

The format sounds like a souped-up version of The Now, which dropped the whole national concept pretty quickly on.

Depending on where this lands in the schedule, this sounds like a great way to screw up KUSA's 4pm newscast, which already has a following, unlike KMGH's attempts at a 4pm show.

Our long national nightmare is over - TD Jakes has been cancelled. The next audience-repelling must-run for Tegna stations will be "BOLD"

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/distribution/exclusive-tegna-s-bold-replace-td-jakes/164112

What do you mean, "audience-repelling"?? As a fan of "Right This Minute" (truly), I think digital content will drive people TO sample this show. And besides, the article says the name of the show could possibly change, too.

I could see this working on WWL (even though I live outside the New Orleans market); it would give new meaning to the name "Eyewitness News" (no joke)!!!

Did I hear Cronkite?

Fun fact: RTM was initially produced at the facilities of the Cronkite School in Phoenix. After the first season, it moved to the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix.

Its producers, MagicDust Productions, are best described as 80s/90s KTVK's spiritual successor (at least at the top — if the name Phil Alvidrez rings a bell, you immediately get the idea) and are stocked with ASU grads and Phoenix TV vets.

(For the locals: the facility is on 48th Street between Elliot and Guadalupe, but it's primarily home to insurance offices)

Scott Jones is attributing the monkeying-around with some of Tegna's news departments to a consulting firm called Red Seat Ventures. Here in Maine WCSH/WLBZ blew up their 5PM newscast last week in favor of a social media-obsessive show called News Center Now, despite WCSH (at least) being the dominant news station in town for going on three decades. The stations' sports department is in tatters, with longtime sports guy (and, after the late Bruce Glasier's retirement a few years ago, its Sports Director) Lee Goldberg pulled off the 6PM newscast in favor of the new venture. They've done away with just about every vestige of sports coverage altogether, unless you count a decades-old humor piece voiced by Glasier featuring the late Bob Elliot (ex-NBC reporter-turned local features reporter) that ran during last night's 6PM newscast where actual sports reporting used to take place. Local station publicity would have viewers believe that these changes were all their idea, but you have to wonder if they're only doing this to fend off corporate's latest consultant-driven voodoo.
