The FOX News Deck

Big Country News

FOXNews.com has given us a preview of the massive, and technologically advanced, 'FOX News Deck.'

ShepDeck.jpg

The Fox News Deck includes 55-inch touchscreen computer monitors — called BATS (big area touchscreens) — which will be staffed by “information specialists.” At the center of it all is Shepard Smith who will anchor “Spepard Smith Reporting” at 3pmET from the Deck as well as cover breaking news into the night. At the ready, is a remote control device that will allow Smith to operate multiple feeds coming in on a 38-foot video wall. He calls the process “a seamless effort throughout the day and night, all the time on Fox News Channel, between the programs and news. - TVNewser

This puts all other news outlets to shame, as most only have one touch screen in their studios. FOX News Channel has taken a giant step in tech, and I'm loving it.

Here's The Video

It looks weird, cartoon-ish and almost unnecessary...BUT IT'S TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

Very cool.

I agree with the unnecessary part; especially using 40" monitors as a tablet.

And from watching their preview video on Facebook about it, they are no longer journalists, they are "information specialists".

"We understand people now consume media in a non-linear fashion, so please watch us in a linear fashion try to show people touching on an absurdly huge screen as newsgather...ahem, I mean, information specialists looking at information."

Hope the money's worth it, Shep.

When I first saw this, my mouth dropped. I'm still trying to pick it up.

This is MASSIVE. I've NEVER seen anything huge in tech in such a small space before.

Let's hope FNC uses this for a long time...or at least consistently.

The "puts all other news outlets to shame" part should be an understatement.

Let's see if I have the correct word for this. How about gaudy?

More like "infotainment specialists."

That, uhm... yeah, uhm...

That set is real, right? They didn't go and buy some crazy virtual set technology? Somebody actually built this?

I can't believe they MAKE touchscreen workstations that are that large.... personally I'd hate to work with something like that. Tablets and computers are two different things and if I want to get work done, I much prefer a keyboard and mouse tvym. (or a keyboard and a really good touchpad like my MacBook Pro.)

I think you might be making an incorrect assumption that these Fox interns actors "information specialists" are actually doing work on these things.

Once again this seems to be Fox news relying on flashy imaging rather than substantial content. I don't really see how using comically sized tablets or a set that looks like the bridge of the USS Enterprise "puts other news outlets to shame". How does this actually change the way news is gathered? It only changes the way it looks.

I don't really care for it, but then again I'm also not in my early 20's...

Ok, how is no one else calling this hideous? It looks ridiculous and SO busy. Also, why are the "information specialists" wearing headsets, is this fast food or fox news? So bizarre. Fox is already winning the #s, is this really going to help them get even more? Doubt it, very distracting.

Edit - This has nothing to do with political biases either. If CNN or MSNBC revealed this set my feelings would be the same.

Isn't this the same thing WCBS did years back when they were in the CBS Sports studio CBS 2 Information Center? I know they had to hire extras to "work" behind the anchors because they couldn't use real staffers on camera...

Looks great. yeah, it may be just for show, but Shep deserves it. Solid news anchor. I don't expect anything content-wise to be changed and that's fine, its cable news and Fox does a decent job so it's the least of my concerns.

Some of these people who expect content to be changed are either Fox-news haters or are overreacting. This is not the 1950s, times have changed and anchors should not have to be tied down to a desk sittting down in front of a background when they can be presenting the news in more unique angles like this one.

See but half of the negative people here are just saying it because they are on the left and want to make the right's new state of the art studio look worthless. Just remember which station is the most watched cable news network...

SPOT ON! Then again I'm on the right so there goes my bias right there. But actually this time politics doesn't play a part. I think Clickspring did this and well they also do sets for the Democratic mouthpiece that is NBC News all the time (sorry, I don't care for NBC News but I do watch them and various other sources but NOT MSNBC so I can get a balanced picture on the world). And the NBC sets look nice too (including the new Today set).

I've never been keen on calling the TV people "journalists", I've always tended to associate the term with print and online more. Not a good name though. They could've come up with something else (interns, extras, people we hired to make the set look busy)...

More like "infotainment specialists."

Sorry, this person doesn't watch Fox News. The content is mostly serious and is mostly dealing with political issues. Hardly see any "infotainment" on Fox...

Those large touchscreens look perfect for an architectural firm... Or, in this case, a map making company.

At first glance, I would say that the users are "little people" and that the computers are standard size but in comparison, seem really big!

Ah yes, the little bubble you live in where someone dares say something negative about your lord and savior Fox News, they must be trying to undermine the only attempt against mainstream media, while at the same time out of the other side of the mouth, make sure to mention about how so many people watch Fox News, but that doesn't couldn't possibly make them part of the mainstream media.

How about this: I think, if the new newsgathering software is truly as ground-breaking as it is, it could make a difference, but you can't make a pretty video for advertisers to ask for higher ad rates or cable companies for higher subscriber fees out of some intern clicking on a 5 year old Dell computer, so let's make a flashy new studio showing a handful of people (a fraction of the staff, most likely) making things swoosh around on oversized tablets to show "WE'RE SORTING THROUGH SO MUCH STUFF SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE EXHAUSTING PROCESS OF REFRESHING YOUR TWITTER FEED" and it will have about as much impact to reporting and analysis as a touchscreen monitor does on ESPN's Sportscenter.

And for the record, I like Shep. But the Fox News Deck is about at the same level as CNN's holograms - the epitome of style over substance.

Fox News hater. Just because they support the right and not the left doesn't make them not a part of the "mainstream media". They are just as mainstream as the others and that's because they are backed up by a major conglomerate as News Corp 21st Century Fox.

My definition of "mainstream" is any of the major news organizations. Fox is definitely major. Now "TheBlaze", that's not mainstream. TheBlaze is also right-wing but they don't even make any attempt to cover news impartially, that is propaganda.

MSNBC is basically "Fox News-left". CNN is the better of the three cable networks but they all have flaws and to be honest I don't watch them much.

Sorry had to vent.

Oh, and Fox News is not my "lord and savior" because I don't worship them. :p

I'm sure Bill, Sean and the gang sleep easy at night knowing you're here to white-knight for them on an internet message board. Hey, maybe Shep will slide your post onto the video wall tomorrow afternoon!

Now read the updated post.

p.s. I don't watch Bill or Sean because I don't care for their views. Yes, I share their views but I don't watch these programs because I can develop my own opinions and don't need Bill, Sean or whoever to do that.

And fox has definitely gone in the right direction by giving Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly their own shows. Well deserved.
