Nexstar...again

Recommended Posts

Wow, this truely is a WFXR clone now...

And a WHBF clone and a WVLA clone... basically a Nexstar clone.

That's one beautiful new set for a new studio. What KMID needs to do is add more newscasts besides the Morning, 5 & 10PM.

http://www.yourbasin.com/news/a-look-inside-the-local-2-news-station

That could also mean newscasts for it sister station KPEJ 24, since there is none on that station.

And KMID finally drops its longtime BIG 2 moniker.

I wouldn't say it's a WHBF clone because of that ugly desk, but it is a WVLA clone.

That logo is hideous. Other than that, KMID just went from being the station with the worst look in the market to the station with the best look in the market.

The next station that needs to get a refresh soon is KCAU. That station is way behind its Citadel sisters (WOI and WHBF) in getting a new look.

Not terrible, but I loathe Nexstar's obsession with "local" brandings. It's cheesy but I know Perry Sook is obsessed with emphasizing localism. Whether that actually trickles down into a better news product or is just a veneer is up for debate.

Their reputation for cheapness has a basis in reality. They don't have a stellar reputation in the business...it's not just confined to websites like this. It's more how they treat employees versus their presentation/stuff that gets focused on here. Just look on Glassdoor (esp. reviews from news department employees)...

That being said I've never worked for them, so I can't speak to any of this from personal experience.

What's your take on KMID's new Local 2 News logo?

Listen, this poor station has NEVER had any love from Nexstar. Nexstar spent the past 8 years trying to sell it. Once they couldn't sell it for a multiple that made sense for Perry, they bought the Fox. Now they are finally pouring some love into this station. They have needed it. It's always been the red headed step child.

I believe Nexstar made up for it and more.

Think of it as the lil 3 legged doggie that finally gets adopted at the shelter...

"It's a rescue".

It makes me wonder if they will ever make something out of WDHN. It's stuck out like a sore thumb long before they bought WMBB down in Panama City.

WTVY has ruled the Dothan market since the beginning of time, and in recent years, has virtually sucked up all of WDHN's more experienced talent, including Kim Allen (now the ND) and made longtime media fixture Ken Curtis the senior reporter at WTVY.

I remember an article from about 2 years ago in which, if I remember correctly, Nexstar's CFO said that Nexstar doesn't care about ratings (some of their stations don't rate with Nielsen and even then, they don't care about being #1) and neither do their advertisers, because according to them, "what matters is moving trucks this month" (not the exact words).

And you're right about Perry Sook emphasising localism, he even did it while accepting the first amendment award

New York Post, Dec 10, 2015, 3:33 PM EST

Nexstar Broadcasting Group is planning to take its fight against Media General to the boardroom if the two sides can’t agree to merge. Nexstar is eyeing Media General’s board nominations that start on Dec. 28, as a prelude to mounting a challenger slate in a proxy battle.

And I thought Starboard Value would be the one initiating the proxy fight. Plus, I could really see Pluria Marshall of Marshall Broadcasting getting involved in it.

So what they recently did in Roanoke, they're going to do it in Huntsville.

B&C just posted today that Nexstar is going to start in-house news ops for WZDX with an expansion of its 9pm news to a full hour.

It will spend over $3M to update its facilities, reporting capabilities & hire 20 positions for this news expansion.

The new in-house newscast on WZDX will debut on April 4, 2016.

The same goes with Waco, or more specifically, KWKT and KYLE-TV
