KETV to take over old train station

Recommended Posts

Yes, you read that headline correctly. On Wednesday, KETV, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska, announced that it intends to renovate the abandoned Burlington Station, a train station that was built in 1898 and has been abandoned since the1970's, and turn it into a state-of-the-art broadcasting and web media facility. The renovations are expected to be complete by 2015 (Though we hope they upgrade to the Hearst "Diagrid" graphics package and Strive music before then!)

But the project won't just benefit KETV. The 115-year-old Burlington Station has had an uncertain future since it was abandoned by Amtrak in 1974. It was gutted of all interior fittings in 1985, then sat empty until the mid 2000's when an attempt at turning it into condominiums fell through in the housing crash of 2008. The renovations will ensure that this historic building will continue to serve Omaha residents for many more years to come.

KETV has posted the announcement, and lots of facts and historic photos about the building to their website. You can join in our discussion on this announcement here.
