NY1 planning rebrand

It appears that Time Warner Cable wants to rebrand its regional news channel NY1, but the change isn't sitting well with some (including the channel's own staff). TWC executives say that the channel would be renamed TWC News, claiming that the name change would help viewers know that Time Warner Cable owns the channel.

Here's some stories regarding the change and reaction to it:

And I wonder if they'll rebrand all the Time Warner Cable News Networks as TWC News, in lieu of the Your News Now brand. This is devastating news. Everybody knows New York 1. I don't think its going to go well. Folks need to write letters and post e-mails.

Interestingly, #Save NY1 is trending on Twitter, so a campaign has started to change Time Warner Cable's mind about the name change. The thing is if they want people to know that Time Warner Cable owns NY1, TWC should look to the Great White North for inspiration. Formal network IDs on many Canadian broadcast networks and cable channels that are owned by that country's major media conglomerates (Bell Media, Shaw Media, etc.) now include a phrase along the lines of "part of (company name)" after
.

If TWC wants to make that correlation for viewers, they should create new IDs that feature a voiceover reading "You're watching NY1, from Time Warner Cable". Then again, I think that people are aware now that this proposed name change has been made public.

I wonder if a similar move will occur with BH's Bay News 9 and Central Florida 13?

News 12 has done something similar back in 2011, but with its current logo. News 12 logo reflects the 2004 Optimum service logo (which ended in August 2012).

If all they want to do is increase awareness that Time Warner owns it, it's much easier to plaster the TWC logo everywhere... that's pretty much what News 14 Carolina does ("A Time Warner Cable Exclusive"). The TWC service vans around here even have the News 14 logo near the rear fender.

News 12 Long Island constantly promotes that they're "Only on Cablevision." The second half of that slogan used to be "Never on satellite" and then it mentioned "Phone company TV" but I think now they directly mention FiOS, which is odd.

Why couldn't NY1 and the YNNs do the same thing? Just promote the fact that they're on TWC in promos and maybe in the opens.

I never liked the YNN/"Your News Now" name... It's more of a slogan and not a name. Maybe this will be an upgrade for them.

That would be the common sense solution but common sense isn't Time Warner's strongsuit.

This makes absolutely no sense from a marketing standpoint. Why would you take the brand of one of New York's most beloved brands and change it to something with New York's most hated brands?

Some of the remote controls TWC issues actually have buttons that directly tune to the TWC-owned news channel ala the iControl/VOD button (Bright House does this with some remotes as well). I think that where they operate a sports network, they have a button for that too.

Absolutely no way. NY1 IS Time Warner Cable. I believe NYC metro folks know by now that you can only see NY1 if you have Time Warner, so it's very easy to put the two together. Rebranding it would not solve anything, and it would certainly take the locality (if that's a word) out of the equation. In the same vein, FiOS 1 is easy to establish as well, since that can only been on that system on channel 1. This is just a case of "if it a'int broke..."

Having said all of this though, I would like them to commission a new theme package; they've been using the Peter Scott Fish theme since '97. Perhaps keep the signature notes but a different compilation, like the WJXT themes from Frank Gari have done.

The thing is NY1 isn't exclusive to Time Warner Cable, the channel's own website even acknowledges that it is carried on Cablevision in Brooklyn and the Bronx. TWC even distributes the channel to its systems in Upstate New York, in markets where it operates a news channel under the Your News Now brand. NY1 is even available on TWC in Charlotte and Raleigh and Bright House Networks in Tampa and Orlando. The fact alone that TWC carries it on two systems that don't carry the Time Warner Cable brand (even though TWC negotiates retrans deals with television stations and cable channels on Bright House's behalf) provide even more grounds for why the renaming does not make much sense.

How about another suggestion: "NY1, A programming service exclusively on Time Warner Cable".

You try saying that in a 5 second ID! That's ridiculous! As a voice over specialist, I would have to speak at the speed of an auctioneer to convey that information.

EDIT: So I might have been entirely rushed when I said it. I'm hyped up on coffee and a very intense person. That's no excuse. I need to relax... I'll try again and see what happens. ;)

you must speak extraordinarily slow then. I just recorded that exact script (with a countdown) in 5-seconds on my iphone. I'm no "voice-over specialist" but I spent nearly two years conveying a localized forecast, often with winter weather alerts, and a 7-day outlook in 15-seconds without ever sounding rushed to my viewers.

In IDs: "You're watching NY1...a Time Warner Cable (or TWC News) service." Kudos to those who posted similar v/o copy ideas earlier in the thread.

For another instance, the TWC logo can be put on new four-panel mic flags, alternating spots with the NY1 logo. What we're getting at is the existing brand is already straight solid and need not be diminished in favor of that of the parent.

I'm also feeling the idea of a package that can be customized w/ the NY1 signature (great idea, Twigz1!), or continued updates to the Fish themes.

Their set is 11 years old, this is when they were moving into their new studios in 2002. They have a twitter page but not a facebook page, all the other TWC News networks have them. I hope they get more on-air people especially in the weather department. They only have one in-house on-air meteorologist, he's seen during the afternoon and they use YNN Capital Region/Central New York meteorologists during NY1 News at 11.

Why are they toying with tradition? It's probably one of those "transitional brands" where overtime, the NY1 would die down and it would be removed once everyone (so-called) forgets about it (NOT!!!).

Either way, NY1 brand is still synonymous to the viewers in the largest market in the land, and TWC is doing the dummy on this. Rebrand everywhere else. YNN was an uninspired and somewhat generic brand anyway. But NY1 is like one of the biggest brands in local cable news. Everybody knows NY1, not this TWC News shit.

It's NY1 or bust.

I think if it's still referred to strictly as 'NY1' in regular usage, it's a win for tradition.

I know they do work for outside companies, so is it possible that Artworks did the graphics? Be it the style, the font usage or whatever, but something about this screams Artworks.

The brand will audibly still be NY1 as per this Multichannel article. But to me, that's not good enough.

TWCN_NY1_logo_480.jpg

If its NY1 audibly, then it should be NY1 visually, by itself and by itself ONLY!! And not attaching this unnecessary TWC News logo next to it. It doesn't look right at all. And I don't even like the new NY1 logo with that same font used for the TWC News logo. It doesn't even look right at all.

Meddling with the heritage TWC, which there real plan was to alter the NY1 brand entirely. Not Good. Not Good at all.
