The CTV affiliate in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada will be making the switch to HD as of Monday.

CFRN-TV is in the process of upgrading its facilities to enable to station to broadcast their local news in high definition starting Monday. This comes two years after their biggest competitor, CITV-TV/Global Edmonton made the switch to HD; while other stations in the city are either producing local programming in HD or 16:9 SD, CTV Edmonton has remained the only station to still broadcast their news programs in 4:3 SD.

What stands out with CFRN's switch to HD is that not only have their studio cameras been upgraded to HD, but also their field ENG cameras. In addition, at least one of their live trucks will have the capability to transmit live video in HD. No word on if their tower cams or their other live trucks will be upgraded to HD by Monday. In comparison, when Global Edmonton jumped to HD news, only their studio was upgraded to HD at first. High definition ENG field cameras were rolled out about a year later. Their live trucks and helicopter only transmits 16:9 SD video.
