  1. I guess it depends on the station. IMO it would work at a station like WBRC, but not a station like KVVU.
  2. That too. The networks are promoting their streaming services a lot more.
  3. I’m not an expert on affiliation renewals or the processes involved with them, but I really don’t think logo removals are an indicator of much. I feel like if 81 stations were suddenly going to change affiliation, we’d know about it by now. If I had to guess, perhaps Gray wants to push local branding to distinguish local stations from the networks. Keep in mind that many of Gray’s CBS affiliates have also dropped the network logo, and former O&O WTVG has dropped their network logo as well. Unless proven otherwise, I don’t really think there are any immediate implications surrounding those branding changes.
  4. Yeah, I didn’t mind the idea of two hosts at all, and I never really understood why people took issue with it. The show has always been about contestants, not the people who stand behind the podium, and I’m sure Trebek and Fleming would both concur with that statement. I wasn’t crazy about Bialik, but she seemed like a genuinely nice person who, by many accounts, got on really well with the staff there. EDIT: It looks like she might (emphasis on “might”) be staying on as host of the celebrity show. From USA Today
  5. I didn’t even think of that; Idk if it might’ve screwed over antenna viewers to some extent (I’m not familiar with the geography of the area or how well stations are received there), but that probably would’ve worked. EDIT: I suppose they could’ve moved Fox to a WDAY subchannel to remedy that issue. I suppose it’s also possible that Red River wanted a buyer to purchase the stations themselves as a condition for a sale, which might explain why a sale of the non-license assets didn’t happen.
  6. Thanks for your insight. I’m sure many of the people working at those stations are taking your advice as we speak. It wouldn’t surprise me if Coastal has enough of a notorious reputation for people to know that it’s time to haul ass for the exit asap if they’re buying your station. It’s a shame that the sale to Forum didn’t go through. It may not have been ideal for FCC regulators, but given how the big affiliate owners use brazen loopholes to own multiple big four affiliates in much bigger markets (including Gray in Fargo itself), I think it’s ridiculous that the FCC thinks a group like Coastal serves the public interest better than a group like Forum.
  7. Not just the Rangers. As per that article, Bally intends to walk away from MLB entirely after 2024. Of course, there are also major implications for MLB teams themselves. The loss of RSN money will likely impact payroll (see: the Twins).
  8. It’s been discussed extensively here in the past, but I don’t think the branding shift was designed to “move the needle” as much as it was designed to promote the local streaming services. I really wish there were more reliable sources for ratings than that creep Rich Lieberman, but even if he’s right…at least the station hasn’t tanked, I guess. Pittsburgh is always competitive, and the ratings race for the 25-54 demo is extremely close. I’m sure there are other factors as to why KDKA is down at 6pm, though I wouldn’t be familiar with what those are.
  9. I’m don’t work at a station, just a casual viewer. IMO, the graphics look sharp and are a massive improvement over what they replaced. My one criticism is that the L3s (especially the logo bug) take up a large chunk of the screen at all times, and a constant headline ticker isn’t really necessary most of the time. Otherwise, I’ve got no issues with them. However, the music is really, *really* repetitive and dull, and it’s already become stale imo. I was hoping there would be more cuts of “Dimensional”, but it’s a really limited music package.
  10. But it is partially indicative on the state of local TV imo. Scripps is cost-cutting too, and Nexstar pays their employees horribly enough already. Granted, neither of those companies are doing anything as drastic as Sinclair, but I worry that this won’t be a Sinclair-only problem in the future.
  11. This is the kind of thing most people wouldn’t have even cared about if there weren’t predatory outlets that drew attention to it. I don’t understand the tabloid fixation with this kind of stuff; if Strahan is dealing w/ something in private, leave him alone and give him a break.
  12. I’ve noticed it too. I haven’t seen the ESPN broadcast, nor do I have the time or the desire to comb through it and compare, but I assume that they’re censoring language that can’t be aired on ABC. But you’d think they’d be able to do what CBS and Fox do and mute only the field mics instead of the entire broadcast.
  13. “Despite all my rage, I am still snorting coke in the cage.” (IYKYK)
  14. Quite a lot, actually. The History Channel barely covers history, and NewsNation barely covers the news.
  15. This is definitely one of the local news stories of all time. I think it’s safe to say they’ve toned things down quite a lot since then, but damn, WSVN cynically chased after sensationalist stories back then.
  16. The thing that irks me about that is that the set it replaced was only 3(!) years old, and (at least imo), looked newer and more polished. It’s one thing if they were replacing a 10-20 year old set, but to throw away a perfectly functional set after only 3 years? What a waste. KDVR didn’t need to replace their set; they needed to replace the (metaphorical) revolving door of talent.
  17. I wouldn’t say that. Times Square is a destination in and of itself, and Lincoln Square is home to both the Juilliard School and Lincoln Center. It sucks that those areas are both losing a longtime presence, but it also makes sense for Disney/ABC to have all their NY operations under one roof.
  18. No worries. The fact that they and the Padres had that contingency plan ready in short order is an example of good foresight on the part of MLB. My guess is that if Bally drops more clubs, they’ll most likely go this route.
  19. They already have. There’s no rule that suggests that they *have* to be on an OTA channel. https://www.mlb.com/dbacks/schedule/programming
  20. I hate to be that guy, but it’s “Abrams” and “WCBS.” Still though, very cool find.
  21. Outside of Atlanta, they already have.
  22. They completely changed out the booth too. I guess Fenway wanted to bring in their own people.
  23. He’s fantastic; probably one of the best reporters WABC has going for them. I could be wrong, but I think he’s full time now.
