  1. Still early in the season, fans of all teams (almost all teams) are still excited and engaged even if their team has a crappy outlook for the next few months. Play into the excitement, the eyeballs and the ad revenue. Mr. G. can record a forecast for the website for the people who really don't know how to find a newscast somewhere on their TV.
  2. There are two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle lies the truth. Personally, I err more toward the Scripps version of the story given (as stated) the number of markets impacted, the decline of CW programming; and Scripps ability to utilize ScrippsNews to fill programming holes
  3. I can appreciate this comparison, and it ties into what @Samantha was saying earlier about Scripps' values in journalism. The KSHB rebrand did a great job at utilizing the channel number as the brand and slogan- I end up in KC a decent amount and remember seeing the "News For Every One" (Stories, A Voice, A Community...). I remember thinking the approach was unique and built a community-minded angle that seemed to take a stab at first-place KMBC/Hearst, where many stories in the newscast are introed "covering (location) tonight". The positioning for KSHB also is a good setting/base for ScrippsCast (can argue that later). Has it pulled KSHB out of 4h place? Not sure. Would love to know if there was a dent made. If northing else, there is likely a greater brand awareness for Channel 41. However, to the point, there are now 4 newscasts in Detroit. if WXYZ is not in 1st place and ratings are lagging or sinking, this might be worth a shot. Including Detroit as the brand might also be a stab at CBS (Again, has WWJ made any dent in the ratings or is there any trend showing they are on track to?)
  4. Anyone know how much WPVI shells out for it? You'd think ABC would make a move to buy the TM from Cox (Or tie an affiliation renewal to it?) Side thought- PVI probably pays way too much for the rights, but history tells us what happens if you change that brand (MCTYW revamp, exhibit A)
  5. Like @FiveNews said, you answered your own question. Also contributing to it is that this might only be a temporary placement through the election season- Political ads often buy newscasts and Fox might see an opportunity to get a piece of that pie- especially if the republicans see value in throwing money at Steve Garvey (or, if Schiff continues the buying like he did in the Primary). To @MediaZone4K's point, I'm going to guess that the GDLA rerun is also loaded with a bunch of plugs to get people to download Fox Local to watch the full show on the go. Now, if KTTV used KCOP news times to exclusively air Chopper Cam of all the car chases, that might draw some legit eyeballs on TV and Fox Local... Hell, that could be it's own Fox Local widget!
  6. Randy Shaver is calling it quits in June after 40+ Years at KARE11. Moved to the anchor desk years ago, but still maintained his Prep Sports Extra- Did a lot to promote High School Athletics in Minnesota! https://www.kare11.com/article/about-us/randy-shaver-retirement/89-81c4fadd-702c-4d15-a6f8-6d4083c817d8
  7. Why would they need to? If you found this video on their website you could surely find the supposed multiple on-air apologies in the newscasts as well. Sounds like the station and staff worked to correct a wrong... Poor word choices, yes. Learning opportunity, Certainly! Career-ending move? No.
  8. Just to clarify, Scripps does have WFTX (Fox) in Ft. Myers.
  9. Interesting hypothesis- and it makes sense. Of the stations I identified, the only one that has a single O&O to compete against is WCCO (KMSP is Fox O&O).
  10. *Byron Allen has entered the chat*
  11. WGN doing a beautiful job with Skilling's last show.... Unveiled the "Tom Skilling Weather Center", Mark Suppelsa, Dan Roan, Steve Sanders, and a ton more filling the weather center right now along with Skilling's family. And of course, Skilling has to introduce and tell a story about everyone in the room.
  12. KDKA, WJZ, WCCO come to mind. Does anyone have a pulse on WBZ or KTVT? I agree with your previous hypothesis that the CBS O&O format might have some merit. Does not help that Evening News and Mornings do not provide much of a support to any of the CBS affiliates.
  13. Does anyone know if the needle has moved in Chicago since Jennifer Lyons took over WBBM? That said, how has WGN fared since she left there?
  14. Outside of the Top 10, but same reasoning can go for WCCO... By a quick count, at least eight anchors/reporters/mets have been with the station over a decade (Ameilia Santeniello ('96), Frank Vascellaro ('06), Esme Murphy (1990), Chris Schaffer (06), Heather Brown (06), Mike Max ('05) and that's just from the anchor list)
  15. The L3 one is what they’ve previously used… new one I was referencing is upper left corner. Kinda redundant they had both on, but it was breaking news- bigger focuses for them in the moment.
  16. Rough news day in the Twin Cities (disclaimer: I live close to where todays shooting happened), but KSTP has been using a new live bug for the last couple weeks that add the city, and landmark/intersection the reporter is live from. Not sure I’ve seen too many other stations doing likewise, but it’s kind of a best addition, but it’s useful in a situation like today where multiple reporters are stationed around a community for a story.
  17. Was not sure whether to post this here or on our radio page of the forum… a broadcaster regardless… but one of the victims in the KC Super Bowl Parade shooting was a local radio host on KKFI-FM.
  18. Mike Nelson, Chief Met at KMGH/Denver is calling it quits in 10 months. https://www.denver7.com/weather/mike-nelson-forecasting-pioneer-and-decorated-tv-meteorologist-to-sign-off-from-denver7-later-this-year
  19. I do believe that CBS usually skips FTN when they have the Super Bowl. Was curious why Sunday Morning didn't have more SB/Football related stories then remembered that football coverage was almost the entire rest of the broadcast day.
  20. Apologies in advance if there is something obvious that I am missing here- But do the affiliates have more leeway on Sunday mornings with where they air network programs vs. local news? With a little channel surfing, Fox News Sunday had Shannon Bream interviewing Israel PM Netanyahu, now an hour later I'm on ABC This Week and Jon Karl introed his interview with the PM as the "first... in over three months". Could be true for a variety of reasons- if This Week airs at the same time as Fox News Sunday in some markets and is pre-empted an hour in mine? Or if ABC taped their interview before Fox? Is ABC assuming that if their viewers are channel surfing, they're not landing on Fox? Or... Am I way overthinking all of this?
  21. Here lies the problem/challenge however- One "good" show does not stop the trend that has driven viewers away en masse. The Swifties are still probably sour about the Golden Globes joke last week (I'm sick of it showing up in my newsfeed), half of America can't stand Hollywood's political opinions in their speeches (see Ricky Gervais' call out of that), oh, and ABC was showing a blowout football game at the same time. It's going to take a lot of time, effort, and consistency to make Americans care about awards shows again.
  22. I clicked on this wanting to hate it- but I don't. Their logic for taking "The" out of the logo is sound, they're using a color palate that stands out in the field, and is a fresh coat of paint that actually looks decent given what Nexstar seems to be going for. Keep in mind that green/white have been the primary colors for CW since its launch in 06. That said, the programming has to back up the refresh. The logo revamp is to show they're superhero network anymore, which is fine; but for your first major rebrand in 18 years (and that whole viewership drop in 2023 thing), you need to have programming and content to back it up. I have to admit that their sports coverage wasn't terrible- announcers for the Barstool Sports Bowl made me keep watching on their own.
  23. All of this- and as long as there's advertisers and the channel is turning a profit on the balance sheet...
  24. Gracias for the hat tip- and to your point, all the networks have found their crutch/niche... And I think much of it boils down to- what is exciting outside of those niches to watch? When NFL Games make up 93% of the most-watched TV programs in 2023, the message seems to be clear that the viewers are tired of the same reality shows, singing competitions, and legal/cop dramas. Which network finds the new big program or genre and reinvents "Must See TV"? Or... Have we passed a point of no return?
