With Dana Tyler's time at CBS2 coming to a close.  Hopefully this isn't goodbye for Dana, assuming she decides to show up at one of the competing NYC stations (NBC4, FOX5, ABC7, or PIX11) for I believe she's got a few more years left in reporting news.  Wishing Dana all the best.

I hope it replaces The Talk; I hated that show ever since. I had a vision of what the lineup would look like.

    10AM (ET) - LMAD

11AM (ET) - The Price is Right

    12PM - Local News

    12:30PM - Y&R

    1:30PM - B&B

    2PM - The Gates

In case you forgotten, CBS pulled the plug on two legendary soaps (GL & AWTW) in '09 and '10. And for game show fans like me,

in case you might remember CBS did a pilot for ($1,000,000) Pyramid in '09, but it was passed up... twice!

Another thought could be CBS & the Bell family expanding B&B to 1 hour, and The Gates be a half-hour soap.  It'll be interesting to see what CBS might be planning.

  3. It'll be interesting to see how those soon-to-be former CW affiliates that are CBS O&O will do as independent stations.  It's been nearly 17 years since The WB and UPN went away when they merged to create The CW.  I miss seeing those 2 networks as independent entities, and we all know they're not coming back.  We can likely expect call letter changes for some of the affected stations to phase out any CW references.  The next couple of months will be interesting.

I mean I get people here are upset and are looking for some kind of justification to Gray ditching the CBS46 brand, even down to speculating a possible disaffiliation with CBS but we’ve known since Gray purchased the Meredith stations that they planned to blow up WGCL. We’ve known this entire time they had plans to make it a more serious news-centric operation with its own brand and less influence on the network it was affiliated with, they’ve made zero secret about that.

What I don’t understand is why everyone is so upset with WANF and the Atlanta News First brand, sure, it’s unconventional but it does exactly what Gray said they were going to do. We knew going in that CBS46 was going to be tossed out, we knew going in that Gray intended to expand newscasts and beef up the news department. Now, WANF is trying to make headway in unseating the top stations in town for news and make a name for itself, and everyone wants to crap all over the effort. I say, good for Gray and good for WANF for wanting to try to do it right this time. I’m sure, as I’ve mentioned before with the whole KCBS/KCAL thing, that this was tested and tested and tested before it hit the air and it worked.

So to come on here and have a meltdown over a brand and say that Gray is destroying the station when we’ve known all along this was their plan is kind of ludicrous. To also speculate that CBS is unhappy with Gray and WANF and plans to yank the affiliation for their own station in Atlanta is also ludicrous. If CBS really wanted WUPA to be a CBS affiliate, they would have done so decades ago.

Why does CBS still own WUPA? That’s a question for the theologians. But the same question can be asked of KSTW, WTOG, and others as well. And if CBS pulls their CW affiliations from said stations, it’s not an automatic that they’re going to be actively seeking CBS affiliations for those. Heck, they could run them as 24/7 linear CBS News stations. They could do a number of things, but I think we can’t speculate about what hasn’t happened yet.

I think we need to focus on the fact that WANF is finally trying to make a name for themselves in the field of news, and Gray is pouring money and resources and time in that Meredith didn’t in order to make it work. And that should be applauded, not lambasted.

We can see that Gray is putting forth the effort to make WANF a competitive local station.  We didn't see Tribune (during the WGNX era) and Meredith (during the WGCL era) doing much investing in the station.

Tribune had originally wanted the station to be an affiliate of the now defunct WB network, but settled with CBS in an 11th hour deal as CBS wanted a station viewers were more familiar with and had a functioning news operation.  They weren't very motivated in adding additional newscasts outside of Noon, 6PM, & 11PM.

Meredith, while they may have added morning, 5PM, & 4PM newscasts on main station, and prime-time newscast on WPCH (Peachtree TV), they're remembered for the failed Clear News experiment, to the the back-and-forth between CBS Atlanta and CBS 46 brandings, and being a revolving door station when it came to retaining on-air talents.

Gray, which is Atlanta-based, sees potential with adding 9AM, 3PM, and 7PM newscasts to the main station, and adding 7-9AM newscast and expanding prime-time news on WPCH, and not relying too heavily on CBS.  WANF has potential to beat WXIA (known as 11Alive), which has seen better days, and some may even jokingly refer to as "11Dead".  WAGA (Fox 5) and WSB (Channel 2 Action News) are the top 2 stations.

  5. The CBS News Detroit set doesn't look too bad.  Graphics is okay.  As is the new This Is CBS News Theme.

With WWJ-TV returning to in-house local news production, I kind of pick up a WIAT 42 Daily News type vibe with the new CBS News Detroit newscast, from the starting out with 2 daily newscasts (at 6PM and 11PM), to having a small reporting staff.  Hopefully CBS has plans to grow its presence in Detroit, considering local news/programming production is typically cheaper to produce and more profitable than acquiring nationally syndicated shows these days.

I don't know what to make of CBS going in the direction of "CBS News (market name)" for local newscasts, when viewers would be used to the "CBS (channel number)", or station call letters, or the "Eyewitness Action News" brandings on local newscasts.

Thirty years of the same music cuts is amazing, given a huge majority of stations aren't using the same package beyond 5-10 years at the most. I don't think we used any news jingles beyond 10 years in Yakima/Tri-Cities.

It's a wonder that WFSB viewers haven't did like what WPVI viewers did back in 1996 when WPVI tried to retire MCTYW, and demanding that WFSB keep "Advantage", similar to how WPVI viewers demand they keep MCTYW.

The only few stations to keep same music package for decades with updated cuts or remasterings to prevent from sounding too dated...

-- WPVI having "Move Closer To Your World" music since 1972, and 4 or 5 day break in 1996 when WPVI experimented with London Philharmonic version of MCTYW that didn't go over well with viewers that forced them to switch back to the iconic Al Ham version of MCTYW.  WKBW used MCTYW twice (1972-2003 & 2008-2014), and WNEP has used Cliff Schwartz version since 1994.  There's also no telling what WPVI would've looked and sounded like (in a what if scenario I've thought of) had they switched to other news music packages like Gari's "Hello News" and "The Great News Package" during most of the 80s and early 90s, and "Advantage" and "Newschannel" (also Gari themes) during most of the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s, or 615 themes like "In-Sink" and/or "Propulsion" for most of the late 2000s and 2010s.

-- WJZ used "Chroma Cues" since 1987.

    -- WRAL has used "In-Sink" since 1994.

I liked The View up until Star and Meredith's departures. The older View had a better balance of political and light topical subject matter. Now it's just arguing.

Not to venture into poltics or too far away from The Talk, it seems like ABC knowingly hires an ultra controversial right wing panelist that will obviously lead to bickering to fuel ratings (Megan & Elizabeth). It became toxic after a while.

Even though it did seem fake that the hosts on The Talk and sometimes The Real did go out of their way to agree with each other, they came off as much more positive shows contrasting the argumentative nature of The View.

I would have to agree that The View was at its very best in its first decade on the air when we had Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopolous, and Lisa Ling.  Back when the show was more enjoyable.  Nowadays, with Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and when the show also had Rosie O'Donnell, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Candace Cameron Bure, and Meghan McCain, it became unwatchable.

The Talk had stability for a couple of seasons with Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, and Sara Gilbert, when the show held its own.  I would agree with the lack of stability with co-host turnover and us seeing Marie Osmond, Carrie Ann Inaba, and a couple others coming and going.  I wouldn't be surprised if CBS were to replace The Talk with their version of NBC News Daily and GMA3: All You Need To Know.  I miss seeing As The World Turns and other cancelled soaps, and too bad that P&G didn't sell ownership of ATWT to CBS.

Networks are going away. The GM here has already made the comment, “do we really need to be a CBS/network affilliate ?  They are banking on creating a local brand. CBS owns a station in Atlanta. Gray is well aware that CBS most likely will pull an NBC BOSTON type move in ATLANTA.  Gray is smart to create a non CBS yet local brand.

With WGCL (soon-to-be WFNA) dropping "CBS" branding and eye logo... It wouldn't surprise me if CBS affiliation was to change channels in Atlanta at some point.

"Atlanta News First" does kind of give off a similar vibe to WJZY which has "Queen City News" as its branding.

Not a big fan of the tiny anchor desk or the sponsored weather center. Other than that, it looks really good.

I agree with the main anchor desk being a little too small, especially considering that Atlanta is a top 10 U.S. TV market.  As well as agree with that ad on the weather set desk being kind of tacky.  Hopefully Gray Television and WGCL (soon-to-be WANF) may consider investing in a bigger main anchor desk.  The interview/sofa area off to the side looks like it ought to be good too.

They’d be dumb not to launch before Election Day. Frankly, if they were smarter, they’d launch in early October at the latest. They’ll be less relevant to the viewing audience if they launch their operation *after* one of the biggest news events of the year passes.

CBS would be smart to move up the launch date of WWJ & WKBD's CBS News Detroit local newscast instead of holding off till November.

I was thinking CBS would be smart to move up the launch to around mid to late September or early October.  Unless CBS may be lacking confidence in their Detroit news being successful.  Only time will tell.

  11. I came across this interesting story that mentions the upcoming launch of the new CBS News Detroit local newscast on WWJ & WKBD.  The new newscast is expected to debut in or around November.  Unless CBS decides to do soft launch at the tail end of October in the days before Election Day.  This should be interesting.

I feel like Talent opens are a thing of the past though now. If i'm not mistaking, I think only WABC does talent opens the rest of the stations don't have them.

That is true.  It would seem like WABC must not be motivated in making that change.  WNBC retired their talent intros in their main news opens 15 years ago.  The majority of other local TV stations across the country ended that practice back in the mid 90s.

Other than WABC... WPVI has introduced their talents in their main news openings, although I see them scaling back on it in certain newscasts.  WPVI could opt for simple "Live with the Delaware Valley's Leading News Program.  Channel 6 Action News starts now."  News opening retain visuals of Delaware Valley surroundings and MCTYW music.

WLS did talent introductions in their main openings, which has also since been changed a few years ago to simple news opening and talent montage piece when the newscast goes to or returns from its first commercial.

  13. The new WOWT set looks very nice.  I like the anchor desk table.  Hopefully The Other Site may have additional pics of the new set in action.

Gray is investing in a lot of its stations I'm already beginning to notice, including stations getting set makeovers, to stations adding additional newscasts to their programming schedules.

Maybe or How CBS has success with game shows… maybe something there.  But I could easily see CBS giving the 12:30 to stations and launching a CBS Afternoon News thing if this NBC thing works.

It'd be interesting to see whether CBS would put The Young & The Restless and The Bold & The Beautiful over on Paramount+ at some point if their days on CBS is numbered.

Reposting what I wrote originally on the "NBC News Daily" thread:

Even after the cancellations of All My Children and One Life to Live, this move genuinely shocks me because I really thought soap operas still have some staying power on television in this day and age. But it's a much better fate for it than cancellation, assuming by the success it's spinoff Beyond Salem has on Peacock.

We discussed in the NBC News Daily thread Peacock the idea of that streaming service acquiring P&G soaps.  I especially miss seeing Another World, As The World Turns, and Guiding Light.  Even though GL may have been on life support in its last few years on the air, ATWT and AW were getting better when they ended.  I think if P&G had allowed CBS or NBC buy ownership of them, those shows would've been on a few years longer or still be on.  Another idea I've thought of would've been for them to be shorten to half-hour in length.

It's a lucky thing that Days Of Our Lives is getting a new lease on life via Peacock streaming service.  I'd welcome seeing Peacock perhaps exploring acquiring rights to do reruns of classic Procter & Gamble soaps, including any and all surviving episodes of Another World, Search For Tomorrow, The Edge Of Night, Guiding Light, and As The World Turns... Or maybe bringing certain shows back for new half-hour episodes.  I certainly miss seeing the soaps and don't really care for the major TV networks going for cheaper fanfare.

Probably. I wish CCO hadn't ditched the "weather watcher whistle" for the CBS 5-note tone.

I still argue the "If it isn't broken..." argument. WCCO desperately needs a graphics refresh like all the CBS O&O's; but they have done a good job going with what they know works in the market- a set that has aged shockingly well for being 10-years old (minor updates, of course), iconic branding, and recognizable air staff. On the other side of town, KARE11 used to be #1 with that same formula, and now they're just happy to be in the Top 5 (as of Nov 2021).

I'm on the fence when it comes to CBS experimenting with that Now newscast concept on its Independent, CW, and My-Network-TV stations.

I came across an interesting video on YouTube of what could be described as a mock CBS O&O intro.

I doubt we'd be seeing this show up on CBS O&O stations.  I'll admit that it looks great and could easily pass for CBS O&O graphics and opening package.  We'll have to wait and see what CBS rolls out to its stations in the Fall.

  17. With COVID-19 dominating the news cycle.  WNYW Fox 5 NY appears to have made a change to its 10PM opening.  Instead of the standard "It's 10PM do you know where your children are?", NYC viewers will be seeing... "It's 10PM, stay home, stay safe, stay strong, we're all in this together."

I miss seeing the soaps, especially Another World.  At least NBC still has Days of our Lives, which got renewed for its 56th season.

  20. With WCBS producing new nightly 10PM newscast for WUPA (CW 69 in Atlanta), I saw where that newscast was placed on temporary hiatus.

With CBSN Boston temporarily taking the reigns of CBSN New York and CBSN National... The show must go on.

I wonder if new graphics will come with the studio relaunch. I like the current music, but if they do change it, I’m hoping it’s something with a nod back to the Peter Jennings-era music. Not a fan of the direction ABC News music has been going lately.

I could see WNT returning to the 1996-2012 Edd Kalehoff theme with a few updates amd remastering working.  We'll see what ABC has planned when newly updated studio debuts.

the name on thurs and fridays seems like they have too many &’s in it though

I agree that the 4th hour would work well with live studio audience.  I'd imagine NBC may be testing the waters on having Hoda and Jenna in studio 6A on Thursdays and Fridays to see whether they'd want to do studio audience shows 5 days a week.

I'd also imagine NBC continuing to tinker with 4th hour.  I could see 4th hour getting renamed to "Later Today", and maybe adding 2 or 3 additional female co-hosts to the panel if they decide to go studio 6A permanently.  4th hour doing Today's Talk discussion (equivalent of Hot Topics) at the start of the show.  Keeping segments, like Ambush Makeovers with Louis Laqueri, and usual celebrity guests, DIY segments, etc.

It’s most likely just a political ad ploy... it’s unlikely they’ll start any kind of news department at all...

I'm kind of thinking that too.  Even FTVLive reported that this stunt CBS has opted for is a "money grab".  WCBS 2 NYC producing WUPA 69 Atlanta newscast, KTVT 11 DFW producing WKBD 50 Detroit newscast, and WFOR 4 Miami producing WTOG 44 Tampa Bay newscast.

    (1) Better scenario would've been having a competing station produce newscasts.  Atlanta, having WSB 2 do WUPA newscast.  Tampa Bay having WTSP 10 or WFTS 28 do WTOG newscast.  Detroit, having WDIV 4 do WKBD newscast, if WWJ 62 relaunching news department isn't on CBS' agenda.

    (2) Another thing worth pointing out, CBS may not be exactly alone.  Scripps is looking to start a WSFL 39 Miami newscast this year.  And I'm kind of thinking that too is another money grab.  It'll be interesting to see whether WSFL newscast will be produced by WPTV 5 WPB or WFTS 28 Tampa Bay.

  24. I saw where AJC Radio and TV Talk picked up the story about CBS looking for to do local CW affiliate 10PM newscasts.  https://www.ajc.com/blog/radiotvtalk/the-starting-hybrid-local-cbs-national-news-program-february/9ZyHFtJP9nOeDtCBfsL6YO/

I'd agree with others about Detroit that it wouldn't hurt CBS to restart WWJ news department from scratch.  Stations doing local news is cheaper to produce and more profitable, even if the ratings aren't the absolute best.  I also noticed Seattle being missing.  I have yet to see on-air promos on WUPA promoting new nightly 10PM newscast.

I think you mean “retired.” That post makes it pretty clear it wasn’t his choice. The whole “changes ... can happen at any time” part is pretty telling. FTV has a vague(ish) quote from the news director claiming they’ll still have a chopper. Perhaps they went from 2 to 1. Or they found someone who works for less $$$. Something’s definitely up.

Besides Cox grounding WFOX-WJAX chopper, Scripps is also moving in the direction of grounding WCPO chopper.  It's possible that miz-sized to smaller markets may not be able to fly news choppers long-term, and that trend could eventually find its way to larger markets.  Plus flying drones looks to be more economically viable.  Or stations doing like a decade ago of sharing news chopper to focus other resources on other things, if they wish to fly news choppers a little while longer.

I'm also thinking along the lines that Durden's departure wasn't voluntary.  I liked hearing his traffic reports on WSB radio (AM-750/95.5-FM and B-98.5) during the late 1990s and early 2000s, and his time on WSB 2.  Hopefully Durden may find work elsewhere... Perhaps another Atlanta TV station would be smart to hire him.
