  1. WAVE-TV in Louisville has a 4p newscast now which was originally going to be temporary due to COVID-19, but is now permanent. This means virtually all of WAVE's programming outside of NBC's output is either news or locally produced (similar to sister station WBTV in Charlotte). (info from @TheRolyPoly's "Changing Newscasts" blog) One wonders if this will be the start of a trend in local TV (network affiliates going all-news outside of network programming). After all, didn't KSNV in Las Vegas once announce their intentions years ago to go all news outside of NBC programming before Sinclair bought the station??
  2. In a first for the Baton Rouge market, WAFB has expanded their 6p newscast to one hour....https://www.businessreport.com/newsletters/wafb-tv-doubles-length-of-evening-news-broadcast
  3. Come on now! I actually like this 5! The logos for KALB in Alexandria, LA (which is now a Gray-owned station) in the 70s were uglier!
  4. Brian Williams was anchoring Nightly News from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan when this happened in '08 (info from Vanderbilt News Archive).....
  5. There's also Robin Read at WDBJ in Roanoke, VA. He has been meteorologist there for almost 40 years, but he currently anchors the 6p news as well (he took over as anchor after Chris Hurst left to make a successful run for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates; Hurst was dating Alison Parker when she and Adam Ward were shot to death live on WDBJ in August of 2015). Here is the 2017 story announcing the move: https://godanriver.com/news/state/reed-moving-over-to-wdbjs-co-anchor-chair-as-hurst-departs-for-political-career/article_e90001bc-05d1-5b61-841b-5d68d2fd1aa2.html
  6. That's not nearly as bad as when the Season 12 finale of Dallas (in 1989) was interrupted twice, first by the declaration of martial law in Beijing, then by live video of officials with the Chinese government ordering the CBS crew to leave the hotel where they were staying (they had been there for the visit of then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to China; the pro-democracy demonstrations there really started to take off around that time). In this case, CBS considered rerunning the episode, but chose not to, although they did air a short 3-minute recap of the episode before airing a scheduled movie in Dallas' time slot the very next week (at that time, CBS aired movies on Fridays during the summer when Dallas & Falcon Crest did not air). On the other hand, in the example of CSI:NY, the network rebroadcast the episode in full two nights later. FWIW, I did get a chance to see the Dallas episode in question on DVD years later, and it clearly was not one of the show's best episodes or season finales, although it was notable for being Linda Gray's final episode as Sue Ellen Ewing....
  7. This also means the end of WPIX’s reporters being featured on Newsy’s programming (Newsy is owned by Scripps). But, this also opens the door for the station’s reporters to appear on News Nation on WGN America (it’s not likely they would appear on the program until after the sale of WPIX to Mission goes through, however)...
  8. What did you not like about Reena?
  9. I like ABC World News Midday better. I think this would be the first attempt at a national long-form midday newscast here in the United States. I know the other ABC in Australia has a midday newscast, and I know the BBC has a midday newscast as well in the UK...... It's worth noting that just like Nightline came in the midst of the Iran hostage crisis, What You Need to Know came in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic (although in What You Need to Know's case, it replaced an hour already produced by ABC News [Strahan, Sara, & Keke])....
  10. The program is back in the CBS Broadcast Center as of this morning (with a number of changes in regards to anchor location & safety)....https://www.newscaststudio.com/2020/06/22/cbs-this-morning-returns-studio-57/
  11. Alanna Autler is leaving KTVT for law school at the University of Michigan.....https://twitter.com/alanna_autler/status/1275074969706225664 Autler is probably best known for an interview with a Tennessee election commissioner that went viral for all the wrong reasons (he called her a "b----" leading her to respond, "Wow! Do you want to say that again, Mr. Buchanan? Do not touch me. Do you want to say that again for the camera?") Four years later, the unedited interview and confrontation is STILL on WSMV's website.....https://www.wsmv.com/news/unedited-wsmv-interview-with-davidson-county-election-commission-chairman-ronald-buchanan/video_f189f525-fa38-523e-9695-3320a3aff86a.html
  12. That makes KVUE the third station (that we know of) to use music from A Clockwork Orange as theme music for their newscasts (WVUE in New Orleans and WXIA in Atlanta are the others). Oddly enough, both KVUE, WVUE, and WXIA were ABC stations back in the mid-70s; the latter two have since switched to other networks, while KVUE remains with ABC......
  13. In honor of KNBC weatherman Fritz Coleman re: his retirement, here is a promo for KNBC "News 4 L.A." c. mid-80s (Coleman is the man with the glasses winking at the camera at the 20-second mark, holding an umbrella, no less): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLJDv_y-30Y
  14. Price is Right, to my knowledge, has ranked in the Top 5 overall among daytime shows for years. Great to see Let's Make a Deal in the Top 5 as well. Note that the Roman numerals I and II are there because CBS counts them as two separate half-hours for ratings purposes (a practice that I think dates back to when Price expanded to an hour in 1975, as it was a half-hour show before that). This alone shows why we need an extra game show or two on a network in daytime. But maybe that's just me......
  15. They’re gonna have to put a LOT of work into those websites! That site is so far behind the times, it’s pathetic! Reminds me of when I worked in radio in the 2000s, the AM station I worked at was still using reel-to-reel and cart machines, and using a severely outdated computer system for automation on the FM side! Both stations have since been sold: the AM is now an EWTN Radio affiliate, and the FM is now a country station (one of 4 in the market)!!
  16. Not to mention a POSSIBLE entry for Nexstar in the Atlanta market, had Tribune kept WGNX (WGCL).....
  17. The website looks fine; they could make the logo a little bit bigger, though....
  18. In that case, I will ask you, TVNewsLover, what are the chances of Colleen Campbell moving to a bigger market than where she is at now (WDTV in Clarksburg, WV) in a few years? Would that viral video from 3 years ago still be a factor in her possibly going to a bigger market, if she decides to??? That infamous quote from her on the CBS Morning News in the mid-‘80s is NOT how Phyllis George would want to be remembered.....
  19. Roly, I am sure you have heard of the case of Colleen Campbell, who was fired from WPHL after going on epic-filled expletive tirade against a Philadelphia police officer that was caught on video. She eventually wound up at WDTV in Clarksburg, WV the next year, and this year will mark two years for her there with thankfully no trouble (she is now chief forecaster on the station's main newscasts). In Campbell's case, what do you think the chances of her moving to a bigger market would be within the next few years, if she wanted to? Do you think that viral video of her would still be a factor, even though it's been 3 years since it happened?
  20. In their case, it was for an ongoing series they do....https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.lex18.com/news/state-of-the-commonwealth/lex-18-wins-regional-edward-r-murrow-award-for-state-of-the-commonwealth-series%3f_amp=true
  21. Back on the Scripps discussion: One of their most recent acquisitions (KATC in Lafayette, LA) was just honored with two regional Murrow Awards....https://www.katc.com/news/katc-receives-two-regional-edward-r-murrow-awards-for-the-list
  22. Here is the first half of a 1979 broadcast of the 6p news on KLFY in Lafayette, LA! If this is not a great find on YouTube, I don’t know what is! Enjoy:
  23. This wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. I can see them going piece by piece, starting with their 9p news and then their midday broadcast, which were the newscasts that were broadcast during WGN’s days as a superstation to begin with. I would keep the midday newscast once News Nation begins this summer on WGN America. Now, when things finally do die down with COVID-19, I wouldn’t mind seeing them simulcast the 4-6p news, and if they’re successful, at a much later time, taking a shot at simulcasting the morning news (and boy, I would love to see the big on-air dance party that erupts when that happens ).....
