1. KUSI San Diego's Meteorologist Mark Mathis suspended for making threats over Twitter.

    https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2018/10/10/suspended-in-san-diego

That's a name I haven't heard in years, I hadn't heard anything about him since his second go-around at WCCB.

I haven't thought about him since he did weather (IIRR, the midday news, mostly) on WFAA. A bit obnoxious in north TX, but was probably just a warm-up. I'd forgotten the Charlotte mess was him, now frosting on the cake in San Diego? How on earth was he in a relationship, with all that spazzy-wackyness? I wonder if he can bounce back from this, or even get a used-car-sales job.

  2. KXAS NBC 5 Celebrates it's 70th Anniversary!

They're doing an anniversary special sometime in the next week or so, I forgot the date, at 5pm. Strange, how they only have 30 minutes to spare after 70 years, but 2 hours were spent for their 50th.

  3. Last night was Kevin John's last night as sports anchor at KYTX. They said on their Under the Lights (high school football) show that he's on to work in Sacramento, but didn't mention which station. According to his bio, which is still up on KYTX's site, for now (https://www.cbs19.tv/article/about-us/team-bios/kevin-john/501-319117827), he is from northern CA and is getting his master's from University of San Francisco. So it looks like a homecoming of sorts for Kevin. Good luck to him.

  4. A happy 69th anniversary to WFAA....

from Dallas Historical Society FB page:

September 17, 1949, WFAA TV Channel 8 in Dallas-Fort Worth (ABC) begins broadcasting.

The initial application for the TV station was filed October 23, 1944, when local businessman Karl Hoblitzelle, owner of movie theater chain Interstate Circuit Theatres, applied with the FCC to obtain a construction permit & license to operate a TV station on VHF Channel 8; it was the first such license application for a TV station in the Southern United States. Hoblitzelle planned to operate the station out of the Republic Bank building in downtown #Dallas. Texas oil magnate Tom Potter filed a separate application for the Channel 8 license and was ultimately awarded the permit over Hoblitzelle. The station first signed on the air at 8:00 p.m. as KBTV, with a 15 minute ceremony inaugurating the launch of Channel 8 as its first broadcast; KBTV broadcast for one hour that evening, with the remainder of its initial schedule consisting of its first locally produced program, the variety series Dallas in Wonderland. In Jan. 1950, Belo purchased KBTV from Lacy-Potter for $575,000; the sale received FCC approval on March 13, 1950, with Belo formally assuming control of Channel 8 on March 17. The station was the first television property to be owned by the Dallas-based company, and also served as the flagship station of its broadcasting division until Belo merged with the Gannett Company in 2013. Four days later on March 21, Belo changed the station's call letters to WFAA-TV to match those of its new radio partner WFAA (570 AM, now KLIF).

What do the call letters stand for? Working For All Alike although the radio station later billed itself as the "World's Finest Air Attraction".

  5. The man who took a pickup to KDFW's studio-office building in Dallas recently has been let go. Authorities can't hold him if no charges are ever filed. With all the mess he made and dust-up he caused, no one has any objection--KDFW, WFAA, no one.

    https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2018/09/15/man-suspected-intentionally-crashing-fox-4-building-jail

Apparently nobody is running the ship at the Sheriffs department...

Strangely, no word yet on KDFW's website, but KXAS and KTVT have reports on their sites:

    https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Man-Who-Drove-Truck-Into-Dallas-TV-Station-Released-From-Jail-493389641.html

  6. Meanwhile, down the dial..... 58 years ago today, Dallas' PBS station, KERA, signed on.

It wasn't until 1974 that they would be able to broadcast in color. But a first came along the following year, as KERA was the first US station to air an episode of the Brit-com Monty Python's Flying Circus. All the members of MP made an appearance during a 1975 pledge drive. KERA has been airing Brit-coms and dramas ever since.

  7. Area ABC affiliate blocks local media critic on Twitter.

So strange how they and the Dallas Morning News treat him. It's almost as if the DMN thought he'd just dry up and blow away when they showed him the door years ago. The other DFW stations don't seem to mind Uncle Barky that much. And stupid, since he can get the information elsewhere that they think they are blocking from him.

It reminds me of hearing how Tracy Rowlett was excluded from the framed pictures of past/present on-air talent in the lobby of WFAA. Very parched-earth, very very sour grapes.

  8. I have some good news/bad news on changes in Texas=

Good news in Tyler, TX...KYTX CBS19 since Monday debuted the ONLY news at noon.

So weird that in all of their 14 years, they've never had midday news on KYTX. They've dubbed it The Noon Show.

  9. Latest local ratings report after WFAA's first GMA Day airing, and midday news move to 11am:

    http://www.unclebarky.com/dfw_files/f2b5f10d183240fce6f2b0bcb2e69c52-4270.html

    1. Y&R; B&B (KTVT)

    2. Noon news; TMZ (KDFW)

    3. GMA Day (WFAA)

    4. Days of Our Lives (KXAS)

The WFAA midday news at 11 was fourth, but the other 3 in the top 3 weren't listed, but were likely a mix of KXAS' midday news, KTVT's midday news and first 1/2 of Y&R, and Wendy in her relocated timeslot on KDFW.

  10. Goodbye Morning Dose and NewsFix, its been canceled. Now KDAF and KIAH can start rebuilding and revive their own newscasts.

    https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2018/09/newsfix-and-morning-dose-cancelled-by.html

Poor Jenny Anchondo wasn't at KDAF very long after bailing from KDFW, wonder what she'll do now. Meanwhile, >yay!< the unwatchable newscasts have finally been put out of their misery. It would be nice if this actually led to a return to a set of traditional newsgathering and presentation, but I guess I won't be holding any breath over it.

  11. This time of the year is a busy time for me when I do my blog and, if you allow me because this will be a list, this is how much expansions you can expect next month alone.

    September 4th:

    • In the DFW Metroplex... FOX 4 News - Good Day becomes a six-hour broadcast with a 9:00 a.m. hour.

So far, no one (KXAS, WFAA, KTVT) has announced any plans to expand their morning shows to 4am; they all seem content for now, starting at 4:30am. I know why, but IMO, a 6-hour morning show is just overkill, really.

  12. Do they really need a news at 3pm? This is starting to be a trend...Is this an hourlong or half hour? Someone raised the question about Jeopardy? This should be more of a Lifestyle show?

3pm news?!? At this rate, Houston (and likely DFW eventually) won't have to wait much longer for a 24-hour or all-day local news source.

  13. Is there any website that keeps track of local network tv ratings?

One website? I've not seen or heard of one before. You get scattered reports from industry mags, local papers, and blogs, but it's very likely that's as much as you can hope for, for now. Especially since a certain firm named Nielsen likes to be tight-fisted with their data.

  14. The DFW market can never have nice things.

Well, now, 'never' is a long time, but likely in some ways, you're right. Other than not having a general-purpose alternate like NY1 or the new Spectrum L.A. news channel, DFW does fair-to-pretty good with quality and availability of news. There should be more than the big 4 English-language/big 2 Spanish-language for news in north TX (including a WPIX/WGN/KTLA-quality CW station), but still... For DFW to not have any more than it does, you still see veteran anchors/reporters moving up the food chain to the networks from there.

  15. Folks, I had a brief chat with Jason Wheeler last night about being the soon-to-be John McCaa's successor. And this is what he told me via Facebook.

"Thanks---but I'm sure they have a whole list of other candidates they are considering. Whoever it is will have some big shoes to fill."

They may have a list of candidates, but I know who's getting the big seat... It's Jason.

Wow, not pompous or full of himself at all. Sounds like Jason is really down to earth. He would be deserving of the chair (if they let him sit ;) ); at least he wouldn't be one of the new crop of no-name who's-that talking heads that are coming along at some stations.....:cool:
