Seems as though there’s something foul in the air at THE NEWS STATION (WNEP) as a wave of departures have hit recently.

A few months back, popular meteorologist John Hickey abruptly left mid-contract to go into the private sector to continue doing work in weather, mentioning on a video podcast things were not going well behind the scenes and it was time to go.

Claire Alfree left to go to the TEGNA duopoly in Jacksonville in January.

This week it was announced reporter Amanda Eustice is leaving the station after 4 years. Meteorologist Valerie Smock left Montage Mountain to go work in downtown Wilkes-Barre at WBRE/WYOU. And whispers abound that at least 3 more departures are coming in the next few weeks.

You don’t typically see a whole lot of turnover at NEP, as you more often than not see folks there 10+ years at minimum.  It’s why the viewership is as rock solid as it’s been. But these past few months have been a whirlwind, and it really makes you wonder just how bad TEGNA has screwed this legacy station up.

Welcome to TEGNA -- They've screwed a slew of legacy stations over, including WTHR and WBNS to name a few...

Laura Velazques moved to Denver after working many years in West Michigan Wood TV for KDVR she only lasted a year in Denver. And Laura moved to become a met at ACCUWeather she is suing them because they laid her off during COVID then she returned to West Michigan to work for Fox17 for about 6 or 7 months and left in Oct of 2021. Rumors are that she in the ND didn't get along they were co-workers at Wood TV why Lara didn't last long at Fox17.

I saw former WWMT weekend met Brian James doing the weather from time to time for Wood TV when Ellen was off since she just had a baby. Brian James didn't last all that long with WWMT I think his wife didn't like the weather or had issues because they moved back to Texas. Brian is from Michigan his parents got to see him do the weather. I wonder if that is what Brian will be doing for the smaller Nexstar TV stations around the country doing those tape weather segments.

Interestingly enough, according to her LinkedIn, Velasquez is now a freelance meteorologist for WLWT

Nexstar owns KXAN and WGN, where there‘s now an opening for another meteorologist since Tom left and Demetrius got bumped to nights from the midday shift. Maybe there?

    My thoughts exactly.

Their story says he’s going somewhere with “very different weather,” which would seem to indicate a station in the Northeast.

I was thinking the same thing... It will be a nice step up for him

I mean I know Chuck is up there in age, but it doesn't seem like he has any intention of slowing down or stepping away. I'm assuming it's a replacement for Kelly Greene.

I remember Matt from his time at WKYC. He's a good meteorologist. If it is WTHR that he's going to, they're getting a good one.

Between Chuck, Angela, and Sean (don't know much about Chelsea) that's going to be one good team...

Speculating - judging by recent Instagram follows, it is WTHR?

I know they lost Kelly Greene not that long ago... And I'm wondering if Chuck Lofton might be stepping back/away??

  7. Okay so we can stop this whole "XXXX" removed the NBC/CBS logo and make this thread longer than it already is, I spent the last 90 minutes going to every Gray owned and/or operated NBC website.  I went to the livestream tab and watched the latest newscast to get the most accurate info.  As you can see by the table I made, 99.5% of the staions have removed the NBC peacock from the station logo and branding.  I can also verify that a good chunk of the CBS stations have also removed the CBS eye from the station logos (no I won't do a table).  Wikipedia and Logopedia are NOT the best source for this info, as I found most of the station pages have NOT been updated to reflect the removals.

I propose from here on out, let's stop posting that station XXXX has removed the peacock or eye from the logo.  Unless the station completely revamps the logo, let's just know that this is now verified that Gray is removing NBC/CBS logos (ABC/FOX are unknown at this time)...

We could be pretty close to WOWT’s GrayONE switch, as because the peacock was removed from the right of the 6 (our pov), the official Wikipedia page for the station has followed suit.WOWT-Wikipedia.png.5f4c77e4d21bfef55c23a287a1a45a89.png

This means nothing... There are several Gray stations that have had the NBC peacock and the CBS eye removed for weeks now...

Another one leaving KTUL after only being at KTUL since the end of September Chief Meteorologist Chris Nunley is leaving for Salt Lake City and joining Scripps FOX13. News Channel 8 has had the opening for ktul since beginning of January and has had applicants but have not made an announcement or anything as of yet.

Not surprised one bit... Good for him
