Insiders.. what is life like inside WBBM right now? How are they getting news on the air with all the cuts? Any plans to replace anyone? They were making progress.. then bam

I don't have any insider information, but I can't imagine that things are good over there. Just spent a week at home in Chicago and channel surfed. It's amazing how lackluster the product they're putting out is compared to the other stations. It's just not nearly as polished as the other stations. Extremely disappointing in market #3.

One of the glaring things I found in watching is that Brad Edwards is unlikeable. I don't know who in their right mind though replacing Johnson with him was a good idea. I half expect him to try and sell me a used car at an inflated price. He's not a good anchor, point blank. He doesn't seem invested in what he's doing and comes off at not genuine AT ALL.

I don't know exactly what can right the ship over there, or if anything can.

  2. WGN is the last holdout in the market for having a traditionally switched newscast. Last I recall, some shows were automated and some weren’t.

There originally were integration issues with their newsroom system when they built their automated control room. It’s immediately adjacent to their normal booth, and I think replaced the original CLTV control room closet. Due to the integration issues and other conflicts CLTV used the automated and they left the main channel to use the traditional set up.

Now that CLTV is gone, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them slowly change to more automation.

  3. Technology is quite amazing. At a station I used to work at, we had the ability to have the weather anchor cut into programming without anyone else being in the building. There was a setup in the weather center where all you had to do was push a singular button and the weather computer and the specific mic were put on air. Then, push the same button and we're back to regular scheduled programming. It wasn't fancy, but it prevented having to call a bunch of people in for severe weather at off times. Mind you, this wasn't market #3. 😉

Do you know something we don't?

A very reliable source tells me that the CBS Evening News on Apr. 25/26th will originate from Washington DC. :)

  5.

This was her submission to Best Weathercaster for IBA... that and she drones on a bit too long for my liking on a morning show... morning weather shouldn't take 4+ minutes...

It's Rockford, they have a two hour morning show. Weather sells and it's not like there's piles of content in big markets let alone one the size of Rockford. Also, it was roughly 3 minutes and forty seconds. :D

  6. The article doesn't say anything about the 11.

I actually beat Feder to the punch, wasn't referring to his article when I made my post.

Last I knew, Zoraida was handling the first half hour on her own, but I don't know the status of that arrangement.

I think that's going to remain in place. She did the 4-4:30am solo today and the format works very nicely for how early it is.

  7. They also did the 4. Frankly, I don't know why they didn't give Cheryl Burton the night off, since she only did the 5. I wonder if they dragged in Jerry to only do the 10.

Ah, interesting. Cheryl Scott did the ten. They gave Jerry the night off it seems. I'm assuming Burton did reporting for the ten.

  8. Alex Maragos filled in for Stefan this morning on NBC 5 News Today.

Not sure if this has been going on all week as this is my first time watching this week.

(EDIT: From what I gather this is his first time anchoring on 5, a last minute fill-in situation to cover Stefan)

  9.

Well here's NBC 5's 10pm newscast push alert:

"Teen beaten by honor students speaks in an NBC 5 News EXCLUSIVE (caps mine) at 10"...

    Cue 7's right after that:

"Group of college-bound teens accused of beating man over $500 bike. Details on ABC7 at 10pm"

I guess it wasn't that exclusive...

The "exclusive" part was the interview with the young man who was beaten, not the actual story.
