  1. Well the robotic camera can do a fast, but controlled zoom.
  2. Well maybe TIH (which is the actual spelling since titles of songs, books require every first letter to be capitalized), and its entire framework can just be shoved into Gannett's ass. Robots: Yeah I'm not surprised to know about Sinclair. They are on the shallow end of major TV groups. I disagree on the last sentence, saying something like that defeats the purpose of a site like TVNT. I was logically thinking since some stations still had camera operators in union environments, and I do not know for sure if TX is a right to work state - to me in a modern day environment with the cost of robotic peds and other related technologies probably less expensive than before, which was making me wonder why. The sudden zoom on KHOU's leading from stingers a decade ago looked so tacky and so obviously it was remotely controlled. I agree on the management, that's the impression I got. KHOU to me is special because it was one of Belo's other flagship stations, shared The Spirit image ID, etc. Better off saying they left the two stations for last. Nice! Dale might get suspended or reprimanded for not saying nice things about the company on air. I'm glad he got the stones to call out this over the top ADHD of news graphics. USA Today is for intellectual dummies who don't give a damn to put their time to read a news paper, and the TV side is for people who have no patience to understand a story. (I so wished I registered last year because I was just as critical when it launched on the native Gannett stations.)
  3. In the case of the Jack Williams story, he was a prominent anchor at one of the prominent CBS O&Os, and I felt his story deserved his own thread and not Out and About for the peons
  4. Hey why is the Belo stations the last major TV group to not have robotic camera systems? I thought TX was like right to work state and any automation technology I would think they would take advantage of. Some of their stations look so old fashioned the way cameras can't move on their own. Would Gannett step in and automate those finally?
  5. I always "Expect More" of my viewers to be quite honest. But most local news viewers in fact are the "Low Information Voter" stereotypes, so I guess it makes logical sense.
  6. saw a music video version in the related section, not sure what year [yt]v=_c_9eRQeDEw[/yt]
  7. You're wrong. Most Gannett graphics that were pushed last year reminded the viewers of their parent company because of the focus of the USA Today graphic style. So your logic is wrong for the case of WFAA. What I was suggesting is WFAA say the new graphics comes after our new owner. It would remind viewers they are no longer a Belo property and any media deal should be a story. I've said that all along. Killing 2 birds with one stone right?
  8. pretty please tell me they were showing their "new company's" graphics - or am I too hopeful & it was really "new graphics"? :/
  9. if I was a betting man, I'd bet against it. Knowing what Gannett did to the other stations with their signature themes, they'll treat Belo's WFAA no differently.
  10. my range of emotions  :ack: :bang: RIP The Spirt of Texas. 1984 - 2014. One of the best local news image IDs to ever exist in the country.
  11. I'll say this TVNT is going down a really bad path like other sites who use IP.Board like forums where there is 40 different categories to choose from and too many options enables dictators (err moderators) to start controlling the content of the threads. Please don't make this reputable site go tacky like every other forum to exist on the Net.
  12. Hope WFAA will be the first ex-Belo station that will say the graphics are part of their "new" owner instead of a "new" graphics. This is a flagship we're talking about.
  13. I'm not liking these new rules. Its too Orwellian. I think the moderators should have a thicker skin and avoid not dictating what we can or cannot say.
  14. God, how can these stations get away with such preemptions? In 2014 of all ages? This is one of the reasons since I consume lots of TV, where I'd rather live in an O&O market, not these sissy large affiliate markets.
  15. I've been watching KHOU (because IIRC, WFAA doesn't do a midday newscast - I could be wrong) at noon/1ET for me and they used to run the entire newscast when it was on the Belo.com host. I'm busy during the afternoon hours, so I can't see any of their stations during early prime. In the case of KHOU - the noon broadcast is just playing MP4 b-rolls, packages and weather. So I wouldn't think it would be a problem to not cut them off, but maybe its just a blanket policy they put on all of their station's Presto sites.
  16. Now that made a lot of sense. I remember his co anchor appearing on a local radio program on the day of their final newscast as a Tribune station, and a caller was mentioning him and everyone got awkward, I guess what you mentioned was the awkward moment. I do have a tape from November 2001 (the day of the Queens plane crash) and he was still there. Interesting, like I said earlier, didn't know much about his whereabouts after leaving NE.
  17. the logo looks tacky. The logo is in helvetica, but yet Houston and corporate plugin is in the lame DIN typeface. People do not need to be constantly reminded of Gannett (on top of the already mentioned USAT graphics) - just remove the damn clutter, Deathstar! And I guess the Gannett (Presto) sites cutsoff the newscast at :27 after the hr, so the last block of news + close now gets cutoff. Is the Belo site still stream the newscast - be a nice backdoor to watch the final block of news. File this under "Can Gannett Do Something Right?"
  18. You are from Baltimore, how is Jeff Barnd? Is he political? if he is, I'd be turned off by him. I remember him at WLVI up here in Boston, a decent anchor. He suddenly left WLVI 12/13 years ago and saw a clip of him back a decade ago with that John Kerry special the Sinclair stations pushed. Then I started to put two and two together, but I shouldn't be so judgmental.
  19. Saw some of KHOU's newscast today, and their OTS on their flat panel for the Rick Perry indictment looked Gannett-ish and their hour to hour forecast had that wheel that I think comes from that package too. I guess slow implementation is better than sudden.
  20. I still don't like the idea of single streamed HD only and downconverts to SDI viewers. That's one of the reasons why I do not like the new Gannett package because they engineered all of their stations to only output HD or 16:9 feeds. I don't want to lecture and say "don't sweat the small stuff" but I really don't care if something isn't consistent such as a promo or talk show. Switching to a new brand since the dawn of modern production trickles down over time since show promos and non news shows is often lower priority. Anyways why should a talk show have all purple graphics if its not even a news program?
  21. That's what I thought. Ohhhh, that's interesting, kinda like Harry Reasoner vs. Barbara Walters? That was nasty relationship too. Another example where I find TIH more casual than a hard hitting theme package. I guess even the somber cuts have such causalness. I'm wondering since it was the end of 2012 when the Hothaus package was rolling out in some Belos, that if Gannett didn't buy them out, they would've implemented the package across the group. From what you're telling me it looks like they did roll out some of the Miranda hardware to some of the stations. I would not be surprised that Belo knew that TIH would be forced upon them so the minute the deal was announced, they just halted the rollout. I don't know the TriCaster fully, answer is likely yes, the CG and the effects and everything else is integrated into one app. I believe that is from the same guys behind the well known Video Toaster from the 90s. It's prosumer equipment, and the quality isn't laughable, but it is a step below the broadcast level. I think FNC uses something like that for their daily web shows, and its professional quality. I know cable access facilities use this too, and again its not laughable, but not fully broadcast grade. I do animations on FCP and export it to QuickTime, and I'd assume most modern production systems like the Tricaster could support QT files. I think its near PowerPoint quality, and you might run into the basic animations. I bet that said station doesn't have people creative enough to go past the systems limitations. When I did some studio production with a Globecaster system for a local cable access, the system was limited - but I didn't have time or resources to see if the system could support QT files and more animations to get the lower thirds to look sexier. I'd bet Gannett would build a new control room, especially if they want TIH to be part of the image.
  22. going back to Gannett in general, but did KENS5 and the others change CGs or were they able to get the USA Today style on their Miranda systems as mentioned a month or two ago on this thread?
  23. wow that's crazy running at 2:30 CT for a while? So used to it at 7:30 living in the ET zone.
  24. I couldn't help to laugh my ass off at 13:00 with sanewsguy's last video. They developed the graphics. Lie! Less clutter. Another Lie! We are making it user friendly. Another lie! (look at their Fb page!) Again, I'll repeat this - I'll be the happiest guy on the planet when an ex-Belo station can just be honest and say its done by their new owner. Could be they do better in ratings, I can't speak for sure since I don't live in that market. The CT zone is interesting when some syndies run as opposed to the ET area. I think WLS runs Jeopardy at 3:30? (sidenote) Deborah Knapp, wasn't she in Philadelphia many moons ago? I've seen that face on retro clips of WCAU if I am not mistaken.
  25. Did they switch character generators? Or was Gannett successful to port the USA Today style to the Miranda systems?
