Yes, it ran from 1988 to 1990. The series was bombarded with low raitings and negative reviews throughout its entire run of one and a half seasons.

add to the problems was 1st season had a super slow, sleepy format, the other season was more fast paced energetic format.

People were better off reading the actual newspaper than half-assed newspaper on TV program. (Oh and yes, TIH also kinda falls into this 25 years later - sorry :p)

Just looking at NBC Artworks, I saw that there was this whole "Look G" design for WNBC that was never used. If WNBC gets new graphics, this won't be the package, will it?

    http://vimeo.com/33418139

    It's a demo. Nothing more.

There was even a Look E demo reel from Stephen Arnold's YouTube channel featuring WNBC test graphics too. The only O&O that actually used it was KNSD. That video was the only thing close to WNBC with the NBC O&O Package. :(

I think the new stations are dropping the reference for USA Today now the companies are being split apart. Which makes me wonder what's going to happen with the local websites? They are all moving over to presto and what about stations like KPNX which are integrated closely with their newspapers? I think stations should buy those combo pedestal units from Vinten Radamec that can be robotically operated and manually operated.

Oddly enough here in at WBFF in Baltimore they have no robotic cameras or even PTZ heads. Their cameras are are mounted on cheap Vinten tripods with wheels:

You may need refresh to see the above tweet.

But I never got fondness or attachment to news music maybe it's because I just want the broadcast to start.

Well maybe TIH (which is the actual spelling since titles of songs, books require every first letter to be capitalized), and its entire framework can just be shoved into Gannett's ass.

Robots: Yeah I'm not surprised to know about Sinclair. They are on the shallow end of major TV groups.

I disagree on the last sentence, saying something like that defeats the purpose of a site like TVNT.

I think it's an added dimension to KENS. They can do more with their shots compared 12 and 29 which have robo cams. Newport was another group that never switched to robotic cameras and I think over at 4 they only have one guy running cameras. So when they were on one camera the guy would run and set the shots up for the other cameras and then run back. So they cut personnel running cameras but not actually going robotic. But with Sinclair now on the fold, they're a huge proponent of automation and robo cams so they should make the switch after the move.

Just because you can make cuts, why should you? Sinclair may think that way but Belo never did. In fact back in 2008, they were one of the last to lay people off. They didn't want to make cut backs but they were forced to, at least in Texas. They cared about the state of Texas. In fact, it feels weird not seeing "The Belo Debates" this year for gubernatorial race. I have no idea if Gannett will keep the concept going but I doubt it.

"The Spirit of Texas" died when Belo Company did. And it wasn't just a slogan but I'd say kind of how Belo ran themselves too. Decent company.

I was logically thinking since some stations still had camera operators in union environments, and I do not know for sure if TX is a right to work state - to me in a modern day environment with the cost of robotic peds and other related technologies probably less expensive than before, which was making me wonder why. The sudden zoom on KHOU's leading from stingers a decade ago looked so tacky and so obviously it was remotely controlled.

I agree on the management, that's the impression I got.

Disagree. I think you save the best for last. WFAA should've been last. But KHOU will be. KHOU isn't special to me but WFAA is.

KHOU to me is special because it was one of Belo's other flagship stations, shared The Spirit image ID, etc. Better off saying they left the two stations for last.

Watching the live stream of WFAA @ 10, Dale Hansen gives Gannett a shot in the ribs on their graphics. After giving his opinion on the Josh Gordon suspension for marijuana, he said"...if you want to write me about it [his opinion], my email address must be somewhere on the screen -- everything else is..." and finishing up during the toss back to the anchors with "I hate the words on the screen..." in a semi-joking manner, although I'm sure he actually DOES hate it.

    I found it hilarious.

I haven't. I'm eagerly awaiting their changes, and just as much, wanting to see how the G-Team fits a Fox into their corporate look.

Nice! Dale might get suspended or reprimanded for not saying nice things about the company on air. I'm glad he got the stones to call out this over the top ADHD of news graphics. USA Today is for intellectual dummies who don't give a damn to put their time to read a news paper, and the TV side is for people who have no patience to understand a story. (I so wished I registered last year because I was just as critical when it launched on the native Gannett stations.)

  4.

I think like this: if Joe Schmo gets promoted from VP to president of marketing or something for [iNSERT MEDIA COMPANY], that that news wouldn't deserve a thread of it's own, thus making a general discussion thread to be a valuable piece to have around. On the other hand, if a company goes up for sale, gets new graphics, or gets nuked off the face of the Earth, then it deserves a thread. One way to look at it is if it's a random note and not a debatable topic, toss it in the general pile. If it lends itself to conversation and discussion, it should stand alone.

In the case of the Jack Williams story, he was a prominent anchor at one of the prominent CBS O&Os, and I felt his story deserved his own thread and not Out and About for the peons

  5. Hey why is the Belo stations the last major TV group to not have robotic camera systems? I thought TX was like right to work state and any automation technology I would think they would take advantage of. Some of their stations look so old fashioned the way cameras can't move on their own. Would Gannett step in and automate those finally?

  6.

I think you are over estimating the common tv watcher, as most people don't care who owns the station they are watching. They just want to see the news if that's what they are looking for, or the tv program they like.

I always "Expect More" of my viewers to be quite honest. But most local news viewers in fact are the "Low Information Voter" stereotypes, so I guess it makes logical sense.

  7.

    This person certainly does.

But yeah, when TV stations switch to new website or on-air graphics designs, they don't point out that it's a mandate from their corporate parents. I don't think viewers would like being told that the station they're watching is owned by some corporate behemoth that owns 40+ other stations...and it's beside the point they're trying to make.

You're wrong. Most Gannett graphics that were pushed last year reminded the viewers of their parent company because of the focus of the USA Today graphic style. So your logic is wrong for the case of WFAA.

What I was suggesting is WFAA say the new graphics comes after our new owner. It would remind viewers they are no longer a Belo property and any media deal should be a story. I've said that all along. Killing 2 birds with one stone right?

  8. I'll say this TVNT is going down a really bad path like other sites who use IP.Board like forums where there is 40 different categories to choose from and too many options enables dictators (err moderators) to start controlling the content of the threads.

Please don't make this reputable site go tacky like every other forum to exist on the Net.

  9.

I know some of them cut the stream early because they don't have the rights to stream sports highlights. I think that's why the Gannett stations do that.

I've been watching KHOU (because IIRC, WFAA doesn't do a midday newscast - I could be wrong) at noon/1ET for me and they used to run the entire newscast when it was on the Belo.com host. I'm busy during the afternoon hours, so I can't see any of their stations during early prime. In the case of KHOU - the noon broadcast is just playing MP4 b-rolls, packages and weather. So I wouldn't think it would be a problem to not cut them off, but maybe its just a blanket policy they put on all of their station's Presto sites.

  10.

Apparently, Jeff Barnd kinda went crazy on one WLVI newscast in September 2001, jumping out of his chair and dancing around the studio after the top story; shortly after that, he was demoted and soon left.

Now that made a lot of sense. I remember his co anchor appearing on a local radio program on the day of their final newscast as a Tribune station, and a caller was mentioning him and everyone got awkward, I guess what you mentioned was the awkward moment. I do have a tape from November 2001 (the day of the Queens plane crash) and he was still there.

He stays neutral which is difficult being at Sinclair which used him to record robocalls and political polling. Because of his position he has more likely required to do the recordings rather than him going out and doing it on his own (I don't believe a reporter that has ethical standards would volunteer to do robocalls or polling). Most political polls are written in a way that is to be considered neutral so it does not sway the response but some of the questions seemed to be one sided.

Interesting, like I said earlier, didn't know much about his whereabouts after leaving NE.

  11. the logo looks tacky. The logo is in helvetica, but yet Houston and corporate plugin is in the lame DIN typeface.

People do not need to be constantly reminded of Gannett (on top of the already mentioned USAT graphics) - just remove the damn clutter, Deathstar!

And I guess the Gannett (Presto) sites cutsoff the newscast at :27 after the hr, so the last block of news + close now gets cutoff. Is the Belo site still stream the newscast - be a nice backdoor to watch the final block of news. File this under "Can Gannett Do Something Right?"

  12.

I've never seen one of their "Town Halls" locally despite being from Baltimore. If I recall didn't Mark Hyman moderate political debates for them? Here only their primetime anchors moderate debates it's sometimes Jeff Barnd but usually Melissa Gilbert. I do think some democrat politicians may object to Jeff Barnd hosting because Sinclair used him for political robocalls or political polling for republican causes (several of the questions had negative connotations.)

I'm surprised they haven't done it before. I know NBC affiliate agreements make them air a newscast before Today, Nightly News, and their late night hours. I was looking at WJLA's ABC affiliation agreement requires them to air a minimum of a half hour before Good Morning America, ABC World News and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

You are from Baltimore, how is Jeff Barnd? Is he political? if he is, I'd be turned off by him. I remember him at WLVI up here in Boston, a decent anchor. He suddenly left WLVI 12/13 years ago and saw a clip of him back a decade ago with that John Kerry special the Sinclair stations pushed. Then I started to put two and two together, but I shouldn't be so judgmental.

  13.

No I have AT&T U-Verse. I have a flat screen plasma and a CRT. I don't pay the extra $10/mo for the HD package because I have no need to watch TV in HD even though my flat screen is an HD set, it's an unnecessary expense. U-Verse does not letterbox 5.

I also hate letterboxed video. I would rather see the 16:9 video compressed to the 4:3 aspect than to see black bars hogging up my screen.

Also, forgot to note, Great Day SA did not have any graphics changes. It looks out of place now because it was clearly based off their now former graphics package. The show promo graphics, like "Wheel of Fortune, tonight at 6:30" are also still the old Belo pack. KENS5 is now a big mess graphically.

I still don't like the idea of single streamed HD only and downconverts to SDI viewers. That's one of the reasons why I do not like the new Gannett package because they engineered all of their stations to only output HD or 16:9 feeds.

I don't want to lecture and say "don't sweat the small stuff" but I really don't care if something isn't consistent such as a promo or talk show. Switching to a new brand since the dawn of modern production trickles down over time since show promos and non news shows is often lower priority. Anyways why should a talk show have all purple graphics if its not even a news program?

  14.

Yep, same Deborah Knapp. She used to work at 5 in the 70's, left for Philadelphia, and has been back at KENS5 for over 20 years. Definitely one of the nicest news anchors you'll meet.

    That's what I thought.

Knapp and Larry Kane hated each other in Philly. H-A-T-E-D. Knapp is actually on record with comments claiming that Kane engineered her departure. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But things were definitely frosty between her and the station.

Ohhhh, that's interesting, kinda like Harry Reasoner vs. Barbara Walters? That was nasty relationship too.

And just cuz this thread seems like the best place to put it: KSDK really shouldn't use the gentle cuts of This Is Home over footage of the unrest in Ferguson...

Another example where I find TIH more casual than a hard hitting theme package. I guess even the somber cuts have such causalness.

As for the gfx equipment, the Belo stations were to roll out the new Miranda system and transition to the new graphics over the last year or so. Since one of the first stations to switch (KING? WWL?) showed behind the scenes footage with text that clearly stated "G3 MIRANDA TEST", I'm assuming Gannett is continuing the rollout, just with their graphics package in place of the Belo one.

I'm wondering since it was the end of 2012 when the Hothaus package was rolling out in some Belos, that if Gannett didn't buy them out, they would've implemented the package across the group. From what you're telling me it looks like they did roll out some of the Miranda hardware to some of the stations. I would not be surprised that Belo knew that TIH would be forced upon them so the minute the deal was announced, they just halted the rollout.

Also, this is for anybody who knows about TriCasters. Is there a separate CG is it integrated into the TriCaster? Reason I ask is because KIDY/KXVA use a Tricaster to produce their news and the animations are basic. Just like WAAY, another station who uses a Tricaster, has L3s that are rather basic in animation. It makes me wonder whether G3 can port the look over to a Tricaster or if Gannett is forced to either build out a new full control room at KIDY. Or, G3 can create a "dumbed-down" version for KIDY.

I don't know the TriCaster fully, answer is likely yes, the CG and the effects and everything else is integrated into one app. I believe that is from the same guys behind the well known Video Toaster from the 90s. It's prosumer equipment, and the quality isn't laughable, but it is a step below the broadcast level. I think FNC uses something like that for their daily web shows, and its professional quality. I know cable access facilities use this too, and again its not laughable, but not fully broadcast grade. I do animations on FCP and export it to QuickTime, and I'd assume most modern production systems like the Tricaster could support QT files. I think its near PowerPoint quality, and you might run into the basic animations.

I bet that said station doesn't have people creative enough to go past the systems limitations. When I did some studio production with a Globecaster system for a local cable access, the system was limited - but I didn't have time or resources to see if the system could support QT files and more animations to get the lower thirds to look sexier.

I'd bet Gannett would build a new control room, especially if they want TIH to be part of the image.
