Aren't there a ton of spaces at Radio City that have been barely (if at all) renovated, some since the building was built? I've seen pictures that look like early era radio studios that have been just repurposed to hold equipment or serve as storage rooms.

It's a shame that Radio City is losing the radio folks, but it does seem like an opportunity for a major renovation/revitalization (if Scripps wants to spend the money on it).

most of the original building has been renovated since 1941... most...

one corner has been mostly left to time... the walls and floors of the hallways are still original tiles...

the tv sports office and radio networks sales office are old radio studios (the "B" studios, B1, B2, B3, B5). tv sports was 620's studio (b1) until they built the studios in the old auditorium space in the 80s...

radio networks sales was one of the "big" studios (B2)... they put up drywall and a drop ceiling... scoot a tile aside and you can look up to the old studio ceiling and the window for the clients booth...

part of B2 was divided up in the 70's to make a WKTI studio (B5)... still there, gutted, as sports tape storage...

there's a lot of space on the second floor... unusable because there is no elevator up there...

a renovation would be $$$ but the building is still solid... lots of odd space they could reclaim by gutting it... they might still end up with too much space...

maybe they could share with someone else like KGO/KRON does...

I can definitely not. If the other Big 4 networks have O&Os, why not ABC? Axing stations that are #1 in their markets? An idiotic decision.

you forgot the asterisks... #1* in their market!!!

(*using the measurements that are useful to them...)

there will be other things happening to the o&o's much sooner than this sale will...

you all will not like them...

One thing is for certain: major changes will be substantially made with the Tegna stations, widely ranging from on air branding to journalistic standards, if or when ownership changes.

And when I refer to "C Clarity", that term is inclusive of the social media-style presentation as well.  The music is a mere symptom of a much greater problem there.

you people are all off your rockers...

this is not what is on bryon allen's mind...

    period... end of story...

this isn't lifetime movies presents tvnewstalk's collective wet dream...

maybe TEGNA is appealing to these people because of the way they do things...

mark my words... some day you will wish more owners were like TEGNA...

when those other stations are going DARK!!!

TEGNA mandate requires the use of the PSIP in all branding. So it's most certainly either ABC 5 or WOI 5. So either they pickup WOI5.com or they keep ABC5Iowa.com as the root. The latter is cheaper.

    you said the secret word!!!

    pee wee herman 80s GIF

    today's secret word is.... mandate...

i guess they forgot about the "mandate" when they gave KVUE a new logo...

    and WCNC...

    need to impress tvnewstalk???

    use the word "mandate!"

Btw, was there any particular reason why KGUN never adopted the previous Scripps package after the Scripps/Journal merger happened?

the plan for new graphics was underway at the same time the journal stations were picking up the previous generation of graphics... by the time it was KGUN's turn planning was already underway... it just took them longer than they expected to get to this point...

this roll out is over a year behind the original schedule...

not sure what got them so off track... the acquisitions likely...

That's an interesting question, I'm curious to know why Stephen Arnold couldn't incorporate the NBC chimes into the new music myself

only a handful of their nbc stations used the nbc version of inergy... not worth the extra expense for two stations to use...

While I generally don’t think these graphics are all that bad, this look and music does not fit a Fox station well.

always enjoy this site... quick to say stations need local flavor...  while also saying all stations need to "look/sound like" their affiliation...

there are lots of sleepy fox affiliates out there... not everyone is wsvn...

I'm just 'asking for a friend' but if given a chance to long timers or them (Tegna/respective GMs) taking a stepback, would they be willing to hire back some of the dismissed talent or not, or if presented offer, would some talent decline? (basically enjoying retirement as is)

they won't be back... their departures were financially driven... with a convenient side effect of the station bringing in younger talent to replace them...

unless they want to come back a much lower salary...

no longtime anchor wants to be an mmj...

90% of their content comes from CNN Newsource (which is a bizarre arrangement itself.) If CNN gets worried, they can essentially kill the network by yanking their access to Newsource. Newsnet wouldn't have anything left to broadcast.

    90%... probably around 99%...

almost everything... even sports... is taken word for word from newsource... not just packages...

    VOs... VOSOTS...

it's all newsource... with maybe a few words changed...

not saying filling your show with wire packages is bad... lots of stations do that.... just not to this degree....

they must be pretty confident nobody will ever contest their inability to follow embargoes...

    just saying...

Whoever calling the shots at Tegna is a prime example of someone who lacks common sense to learn from their mistakes.  Forcing "C Clarity" and those gfx on WTHR and WBNS will not end well for those stations, sadly.  It hasn't worked well on any station, and it will not work on those stations either.

If someone wants to "dislike" my comment, go ahead.  But it won't change my opinions on that one inch.

    the big lebowski opinion GIF

do you have any evidence to support those claims??? seems to me like a lot of tegna stations are doing fine... even winning awards for their work!!!

there is no evidence whatsoever that the graphics and the music have impacted viewership... just a tvnt conspiracy theory... the format??? maybe... but the graphics??? who cares??? one person on facebook???

if you all had your way and brought the industry back to the roarin' 90's that you all consider the golden age... the industry would be dead by 2021.

tegna made $552 million last quarter... 2% more than last year... sounds to me like they're doing fine...

  10. the everlasting battle between graphics and the newsroom...

most lower thirds have a character limit... most producers hate the character limit... because they can't figure out how to keep anything short...

if it were up to some producers, lower thirds would be fancy closed captioning...

the real story there was the arrest...

  11. 8 hours ago, SnellKrell said:

Who writes this stuff?  Where was the producer?  Doesn't Holt read his copy before going on air?

    writers, producers, unpaid interns...

some anchors skim their scripts for hard to pronounce words... but they don't sit down and fact check it... their job is to read what scrolls up that prompter...

    i'm ron burgundy?

  12. this pkg is a big disappointment... it has all the makings of something done in-house... at least tegna went outside the hub to get a designer...

doubt there will be a warm reception to these from many stations management teams... to go from flashy renderon graphics (which most of the old jbg stations have used since 2004) to... this...

this might be the second coming of the burnt orange scripps pack... i give it a few years before it gets replaced...

hopefully the rumors of the "alternate package" are true...

It’s the original refresh of the L3’s for promos previewing an upcoming newscast... at least that’s what WXYZ used them for but those have been gone for a couple years now. It’s a little odd to see them as actual L3’s during a show. Took me a minute to place where I had seen those...

i can assure you... everyday health was 100% done in-house and pre-dates scripps ownership of the station... and long before tmj started working with the graphics hub (that did not happen until right before tmj debut the current gfx)...

if my memory serves me correctly... that lower third was thrown together in an afternoon...

any resemblance to a scripps graphic is purely coincidental...

  14. newsnet will be one of "those" networks... passed around between forgotten stations in a particular market until it folds...

start a budget news network, get budget stations... how many .11's are they on??

the service is probably free for affiliates... newsnet makes their ad revenue off the national life insurance ads...

    and then there's this...

    so much for unbiased...

  15. no doubt about it... classic management interference right there...

sports broadcasts bring in the big bucks... don't want to piss off a client with your tornado warning ticker covering their phone number...

and the postgame sponsor paid for the whole show... not the part covered up by some weather guy with his sleeves rolled up...

WGN has only so many games left to milk sweet ad revenue from...

and of course... nobody wants to deal with angry cubbies fans... drunkenly hooting and hollering to the poor assignment desk about how distracting the weather double box is...

WFAA is a shell of what it once was. And the team that has overseen much of this decline gets promoted? Another genius move bye Tegna.

the smart people are looking towards the exit... not looking to become a manager...

Bumping this after nearly 3 months to tell you that NewsNet still exists, and, they're getting a New York affiliate! Starting May 1, they'll be on WNWT-LD 51, a channel that I assume isn't carried on ANY area cable system.

PS, I still haven't watched NewsNet yet, but let me tell you, if they want to last more than 1 year, they'll need cable penetration and carriage on subchannels of at least 5 Big 4 stations. Heck, I think Buzzr wouldn't have survived had they not gotten prime carriage on the Fox O&Os.

amusing... WNWT's antenna just so happens to be on a Trump property... "Trump world tower"...

    coincidence i'm sure...

  18. "go away"???

where are they going to go???

gray and nexstar own over 300 stations combined... if they had to "go away" i can assure you many of those would cease to exist... poof...

it will happen... eventually... there will be no buyers left... and it will be easier to liquidate assets and shut down... than wait around and try to sell off...

happens all the time in a lot of industries... restaurants... stores (how many retailers have gone bankrupt in the past 5 years???) and one day it will happen to tv... then you will wish the grays and nexstars were still around...

these companies are keeping the industry from reaching mach speed on the down slope to the end...

  19. here's something you don't see every day... an anchor appearing on a competitor...

KXTV morning anchor Mark S. Allen appeared on KMAX's Good Day Sacramento (his former home) to commemorate the retirement of GDS anchor Marianne McClary.
