If they grow like that into year two and three... ANF could really theaten WSB-TV's longtime dominant decades-long #1 status.

Sure and you have a bridge in Arizona to sell. WSB still commands 50% of the audience share in last year ratings WSB won every newscast. When it was WGCL it tied with WXIA or beat WXIA.  You definitely have to slaughter WXIA and WAGA to take on the 800lb gorilla. They will beat WXIA for sure, but they have their work to touch WAGA.

I wasn't referring to Kim. I was referring to Roland Martin.

I think Roland's studios is in D.C. and TEGNA owns WUSA- that why he going with them. Idk he was pushing this deal. At the end of the day the TEGNA deal is the worse thing for broadcast. Here's hoping it doesn't go through.

Yes... Unless Univision pulls off wins in some timeslots? I'm pretty sure KXAN dominates the big four.

KXAN is 1st but KVUE is right behind them- there one newscast I was told they win.  KEYE is beating KTBC in a few newscast.

This was discuss on another website.  I was shocked KEYE was making movement.

I sound like a broken record, but the KCTV news director is out after one year on the job.

That station always seems they can't keep a news director.  Also KCTV in 4th place too.

You guys aren't going to like my comment, so viewer discretion advised.

hat anchor kid from Toledo has a goofy laugh. He belongs on Channel 6. They are just less formal over there.

Has WSYX ever been number one in the history of Columbus television? I think this has got to be a first.

    Also: Kurt Ludlow's ultimate revenge!

The kid from Toledo should of been on the morning news with Angela Ann.  Now the best scenario should of been

Jeff Hogan and Tracey Townsend at 10TV

Yolanda Harris/Kurt Ludlow/Terri Sullivan on 6 On Your side

    Yeah I know wishful thinking-

However, no he doesn't belong on 6. His thing is more for the morning news not primetime.  He no Jerry Revish, and with 10TV going from the gold standard to

a broke down Winnebago. You get what you pay for under TEGNA.

Jeff Hogan/ Yolanda Harris would be perfect with Jerry Martz.  I'm ready for them to retire Dom Tiberi. He ones of the last from the past along with Colleen Marshall and Terri Sullivan. Most from back in the day have left local tv news.

I have found no evidence of WTVN or WSYX hitting tops back in the day.

WTVN was #2 in the mid 70s when ABC was riding high and WCMH was in the gutter.  WBNS of course a very starch and conservative news operation was sitting at #1.

80s very competitive with Doug/Mona from Cleveland.  Michelle Gailiun with Tom Ryan/ Lou Forrest provided a strong #2 beating BNS by couple points at 6/11pm in the late 80s.

90s ownership woes and talent changes played with WSYX - WCMH and WBNS in the fight of neck to neck at 11pm during NBC's ER/Friends era.

When Media General took over the 4 NBC O&Os they wanted to dump, they got in way over their heads.  They sold off KIMT, KWCH, WIAT and WDEF to make the down payment.  They later sold their smallest stations to Hoak (WMBB & KALB),  Nexstar (WJWB/WCWJ) and Morris (WTVQ) to get some more cash.  WJAR was probably the only station that didn't tank under their control.  They didn't move the needle at WNCN, and succeeded in tanking WCMH and WVTM (while WIAT climbed out of the basement for the first time EVER after their divestiture).  This, the recession, and their unholy devotion to newspapers until Soo Kim came knocking (when they unloaded them to Warren Buffett and the Tampa Tribune to another party) was what led Media General to nearly filing for bankruptcy along with a series of layoffs and furloughs, even after others recovered from the economic crisis of 2008 and 2009...

While NBC treated their smaller markets like garbage, the product still outranked whatever Sinclair was putting out at the time.  And yes, WCMH got lots of hand-me-downs from NBC itself.  I believe even their studio cameras were once used for Saturday Night Live in studio 8H at 30 Rock.

Sinclair has always been "profitable" in Columbus.  Having the Buckeyes on WSYX (on both ABC and FOX) has been a windfall for them, and the way they engineered their dominance in the marketplace clearly gives them the edge that WCMH and WBNS have not been able to match.

I've always hated how Sinclair owned both ABC & FOX because in a top 30 market. I always wish River City and Sinclair never merge. I always saw WSYX being owned by Young Broadcasting. I would have love to see a [4] newsroom competition.  Cincinnati and Cleveland has it, and the Columbus market has always been an odd ball. Columbus market bigger than Cincinnati, and it still seems odd.

Media General wasn't bad- honestly the did more good than bad.  Outlet did alot of investment into WCMH during their heyday.  I think with NBC owning the station. It was seen as a network O&O came to Columbus. Which never happened, and a bigger owner than the Wolfe's.   Taft was good in it day, but Channel 6 was owned by Private Equity Group.  {Anchor Media, Continental Ltd, River City}  Sinclair was nothing but some mediocre company from Maryland. Owning a few stations here and there at the time.

Why when they are number one without her?

They were #2 with her and the ratings keep going up.  She got her big pay check over at 10TV. I was told people told her not to go over there, but she saw the legacy of the station. Not only that, but she was popular with the public.  When you have a big Q score they don't snatch you away from the competition.  Angela Pace she wanted more $$$ at WCMH back in the day.  10TV under the Wolfe's snatch her up and 10TV over took News4 in 1992.   Andrea Cambern as well got a paycheck too.  in 1981, when Channel 6 was owned by Taft and was WTVN.  Michelle Gailiun got a nice big paycheck as well too.

Sinclair is known for not paying. WJLA is in a top 10 market, and Leon Harris and Maureen Bunyan who brought lots to the table didn't get renewed because they made too much under Sinclair's eyes. Let be honest.

If she had stayed and at least was making 150K. She would of been at #1 on WSYX instead of making double the amount now sitting at #2 at BNS,.

  7. Give the people what they want. I remember when WSYX numbers in the morning were trash.  Now, now the folks at Ten TV is in the shock of it life.

They still have a promo saying they're #1 at 11pm

However, it great to be #1.  Let hope WSYX is paying staff like they're #1.  WBNS paid Yolanda Harris more $$$. WSYX should of pony up those dollars for her to stay.

Very interesting how the tide has turned.

I’m trying to understand the logic of debating the importance of channel numbers when they’ve been falling into irrelevance since the DTV switchover… and will further become irrelevant as ATSC 3.0 is rolled out.

    This isn’t 1994.

The audience who've been around will cling to a channel #.  They will see the # in the logo, because people only remember the abstract.

I agree. I use YouTube TV and regardless of the channel number, the first channels that appear are CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox. I'm in San Diego, so the order isn't even in number order... 8, 10, 7, 5...

I'll also add, that's the default, but you can customize the order of the channel listings by putting your most watched at the top. So in the end, that channel number really doesn't matter

They sure move The Young and The Restless around in San Diego. Wasn't it just a decade ago they moved to 11am?

Since they added WDJT to my cable system, it's been just either '9' or '605' in the Roledex of my mind so I knew where to tune, and now it's just 'CBS 58' because that's what they've been every day since December 1994 and never changed the branding. Their first priority was to get established, then build a news division; on that front they've been very successful and now you nearly forget that CBS bounced around 6, 12 and 18 for so many decades, and they've got a good syndicated schedule.

Meanwhile, WWJ has just...kinda existed. They just pass through CBS-owned content in syndication and outside of a few Lions games here and there and watching CBS, there's really been nothing to keep you there because 2, 4 and 7 are always there in their niches. Same when they purchased WKBD and made it just another bland UPN/CW station. And it's either 62 CBS, CBS Detroit, CBS, WWJ, CBS 62...never any consistent branding. And it didn't help that CBSNS had old guard management at the Westinghouse stations that wasn't changing a thing any time soon, or dysfunctional idiots with battling egos who bought stations to get into a golf club, and in Detroit, just never really tried.

Still ended up a better result than getting WADL as an affiliate, though; that entire station is a headache and a half as it is now. Imagine having to fight them every few years on affiliation terms.

WADL didn't like the contract and terms of the CBS contract that why they never affiliated with them.  WADL's owners wanted more $$$ out of the CBS deal back in 94. If Cox hadn't sold WKBD in 1993, WKBD probably would of been

the CBS affiliate.  When WKBD was FOX50 it 10pm did well.  I'm sure under Cox in the 90s it would of pony up the $$$ and would compete against 2,4,7.  I remember back in the 90s 62 mgmt kept saying a local news was coming in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000. By then WKBD/WWJ were merged under the CBS/Paramount brand. Using WKBD's facilities to do 10&11pm news then it get the axe. 20 years later a newscast returns. Almost 30 years to the network switch. It good to see them doing a newscast, but with so many new talent- at sometime you do have to bring in a talent in the market that has a name brand the audience knows.  Someone posted online and said "62 has news"

CBS prime time has done well in Detroit battling WXYZ & WJBK for 3rd in prime time. I hope there some good promos at 62CBS.

Houston isn’t that attractive of a city. Most southern cities aren’t attractive enough to pull in people at the pay they’re offering.

What exactly does that mean? Houston itself is growing by leaps and bounds. The population growth is massive. #8 tv market has to be attractive to businesses.

Just pure curiousity on my part...

If KCAL9 has higher ratings/profile... why not move the CBS affiliation from Channel 2 to 9?

If I remember correctly, didn't FOX do something similar in Minneapolis, moving their network from Channel 29 to 9 because KMSP had a higher ratings and better news legacy as an UPN affiliate.

In Minneapolis -it was due to WFTC being owned by Clear Channel & KMSP was UPN owned by Chris Craft/United TV.  It was ownership of both stations. FOX29 became UPN 29 and KMSP went back to FOX.  FOX ended up owning both stations. Then 29 ended up at 9+

No really the same thing with KCBS/KCAL.

Oh CBS what a mess. I understand that the aim is for straightforward easily identifiable branding, but this is too wordy. " KCAL News at 11AM on CBS Los Angeles". When you have a name as a brand its more easily transferable. Example: Atlanta News First, it works on both WANF and WPCH. Then again this was tried already with "News Central". Maybe CBS should abandon standardized O&O branding and let individual stations do their own thing.

The L3's look terrible,  it screams streaming (which is probably the point).

That's better. Local stations are really mix and match all over the place with anchor pairings, that it's confusing to tell what time you can see your preferred anchor.

What lame brain consultant is coming up with these stupid branding names?

  14. {from ftvlive.com)

On Monday, Tegna’s WBNS (Columbus) parted ways with News Director Jennifer Nickels.

According to sources, the decision was due to a loss of sponsorships and high turnover at the station. Mason Waldvogel is currently serving as the acting news director while the station searches for a replacement.

In an email to staff, station General Manager John Cardenas informed employees of the change.

Nickels' Twitter bio previously listed her as the news director at 10TV, but that information has since been removed. It is unclear what her future plans are at this time

I wonder what happened here. Just because Tegna is in limbo they couldn't meet her salary demands? Not looking quite as hot as she used to?

Her husband works for the Baltimore Orioles. I wonder if she's going to work for Sinclair.

I thought maybe because she had kids back-to back.  They should get Jeff Booth back. I'm loving this- how the mighty has fallen at Twin Rivers Dr.
