The Express Group. Update by FX.

I want to thank you, Don Martin -- you've finally solved a huge frickin mystery neither me or @Samanthacould figure out -- the designer of the 90s "spaceship sets", so named because KNXV's Express set from when they began their news op in 1994 was dubbed the "spaceship" in the local press. Neither of us had been able to get any conclusive leads until you posted the name. I've attached pics of some of the spaceship sets Express did in the 90s (they also did at least one Canadian set, for Edmonton's CITV; other spaceshippy sets not seen here include KWGN. WIAT and WDAF).

Well, after looking up some airchecks from WOIO and WUAB in the 90's....I guess my vision of what they had was sort of jumbled together.  It seemed the banks of monitors that both WOIO and WUAB used on their respective sets resembled what I saw when the WDTN and WKYC sets were shown here. None of the "highway bars" like the other sets had.  WOIO had their "newsroom" set all the way to "Action News" and WUAB had a separate set until the same era.

No, the Cleveland Television News sets definitely did have the highway bars. I'm wondering where WUAB's Express set was in the building; analyzing WOIO/WUAB footage of the time, I can't figure out if it was just off the newsroom where it couldn't be seen from the newsroom cameras, or if it was in a completely separate studio.

Logo changed on Twitter and Facebook. I don't receive News 12 on TV but I'm not noticing any on-air changes yet while looking at the most recent video on their website.

Guess this logo's been designed to go with the Altice logo (as the last one mimicked the old Optimum "ring").

Looks similar to the basic animations used for the WABC graphics package... I wonder if the same company did it for them.

I thought that WABC look (which really sucks) was done in-house (which would explain why).

Completely off topic (but it’s TVNT so 🤷🏻‍♂️) I have no idea why Bill St. James hasn’t been used by local stations as they look to replace CVD.

He doesn't seem to do local stuff. The only things he seems to do now are Adult Swim and his weekend radio show TimeWarp. He voiced Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite for years, plus both HBO and Showtime.

They used the video screen to the right of the news desk during the 4 PM newscast.

Wait, they added an actual video screen there? I thought that was just an Accuweather-themed backdrop they occasionally superimpose stuff over.

When a lot of Phoenix videos started showing up, I really gained an appreciation for how dowdy KPHO's product was as the 80s turned into the 90s. They really did start getting serious with the February '94 refresh (Fresh News and new graphics). They knew KNXV was coming into town — actually, their first show would have aired July 7, 1994, if the affiliation switch had not caused changes (they opted to reset a bit, and the first News 15 aired August 1).

They say KNXV toned down its product to adjust for the fact they'd be an ABC, not a Fox, affiliate. Could you imagine? As it was, the early KNXV product shook the market. I think they would have blown KPHO out of the water within months.

If Phoenix was Toronto, then KNXV would've been their equivalent to CityPulse -- a shocking, edgy, informal newscast that dedicated itself to deeper stories -- had the New World domino effect not screwed things up. As it was, they went downhill in two years and went through multiple campaigns and logos trying to find something that worked.

Is that the VO from Inside Edition? If so, then kudos to Gray.

Steve Kamer's the name. He's done some local news work, including KCAL; I believe he's also the voice of the YES Network too.

It does feel like something from TVbD circa 1996-97... I think it's the typeface, honestly.

Ironic, considering it was TVbD that created WOIO/WUAB's "Cleveland Television News" look in 1995-96:

Promos & a Feature Presnetation intro from BET Movies (now Starz in Black) from 2000:

Should be noted BET had to leave this after Viacom bought them out since they were then co-owned with Showtime (resulting in BET Movies: Starz! 3 becoming Black Starz and eventually Starz inBlack).

But here's something BET didn't sell to Viacom: their own PPV service, previously the independent Action PPV (BET took it over sometime in the late 90s):

Looks like KRON — and perhaps more Nexstar stations — are venturing into 24/7 news.

Which reminded the geek in me of their NewsCenter 4 “24 Hour News — Every Day, Every Hour” days.

Sounds more like a revival of BayTV, a joint-venture of KRON and TCI/AT&T (it was shuttered just prior to AT&T Broadband being gobbled up by Comcast).

But no one ever did the 24-Hour News format better than CityPulse.

It time to reboot Captain Kangaroo and just place it at 7am on CBS.🤣🤣

Or revive game shows. Now where's that Spectrum27 guy?😋

Firstly, Saban already tried a Captain Kangaroo reboot in the 90s, didn't last long in syndication and it then anchored a block on the ill-fated Fox Family.

As for game shows, in this case, no. I want CBSTM to remain as it is-- low-key, news focused, I like it since it doesn't focus on features too much or be overtly political like cable news. I can't go back to GMA or Today now.

A full broadcast of the CBS Evening News (March 9, 2005), when Dan Rather retired from the anchordesk. Includes the final segment of WBZ's 6pm newscast. Anyone knows the name of the anchor filling in for Jack and Lisa?

I LOVE that standing ovation the CBS News crew gave Dan at the end. Combined with the Patterson Walz and Fox theme, it's beautiful. It's a shame they had to interrupt it with the plugs for their website and Wal-Mart, you'd think they could've left those out that night,

  12. Interesting... does EGAD have a client list anywhere?

A KPTV open pops up at the end of this compilation, using similar GFX to sister station KTVX at the time. Really nicely done, I’d say. Who designed those?

Given the look of it, whoever designed this KSTP open from 1994:

Wow, the 1996 open is jarring. The station had done a lot of modernizing in presentation but the news open was completely divorced from that.

KPTV was a very traditional station, even during the UPN days-- it wasn't until Meredith got their hands on it and turned it back into the Fox station that the local feeling was kinda drained out.

  13. Meanwhile, all throughout the 90s, there were tons of sets-- notably KNXV's "spaceship" set when they launched their news op-- that all seemed to come from the same people and had a lot of standard elements: girders/crossbeams, monitor banks (which typically didn't work), funky-looking backdrops and desks. I dunno who designed/built these things, but there were a lot of users (there are probably more that I can't recall at the moment):

    KNXV

    WGNX/WGCL

    WOIO/WUAB

    WKYC

    WUSA

    KSAT

I wanted to add a bunch of screen caps, but apparently you can't embed the images directly from your computer.

  14. Did not see that noon open with the screeching bald eagle! I'm surprised it doesn't say "10 News", though. The "Channel 10 News" lockup at the front is a bit off model — the word "Channel" isn't compressed like in the rest of the package and it dominates the thing.

Yeah, somebody must've changed the animation (maybe because with the switch, they knew the Spirit of Arizona slogan wasn't gonna last much longer?). Not to mention the announcer, who isn't John B. Wells or Chris Corley-- whoever he is, he clearly didn't have much enthusiasm.

  15. I've been on a Showtime kick lately, and I want to introduce you guys to some of their underrated promos and intros.

First, a short promo that kicked off the "Excitement" campaign (based around the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited") in 1984, which is when Showtime really began evolving their on-air look:

Then their Exclusive Movie intro of the period, and the ratings bumper which really gives you the chills:

Jumping forward a few years, straight from one of the people who worked on it, one of the Pittard Sullivan-era intros, which were very visually attractive, if overloaded with elements:

From 1995, one of their "Start Time" intros, part of one of the most minimal, yet attractive looks on premium cable (the current Starz look is very lazy in comparison)

And to wrap things up, a set of quirky intros from the late 90s-- one for Showtime (then having just entered the "No Limits" era), two for TMC:

  16. WPHL has gone KCPQ. And like the latter, the graphics are brilliantly done.

Hey Tribune, even though you’re on your last legs, you should consider hoisting these graphics onto certain stations in Milwaukee and Greensboro, you know?

Wow, that's just... amazing. I really love the drone shot at the end of the open going over the Art Museum looking towards the skyline.

  17.

Have we ever talked about the WITI Six is News era?

The individual elements of the open really aren't bad, but the mishmash of the intense "It's on Fox" sounder/edgy "Six is News" brand with the orchestral FAT Package and Norman Rockwell-esque clips was just...yuck IMO. Water and oil.

Still better than WJW's "ei8ht is News" period from around the same time-- they didn't constantly repeat the moniker at every turn.

  18.
From the same channel that brought you the rare 1991 WNYT clip on St. Patrick’s Day comes a “NewsCenter 6:30” segment from that same day two years later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrRJwJHqjeo Btw how long was Marty Aarons at WRGB? A Reddit post made a joke about how he “didn’t even last 42 weeks replacing a guy that lasted 42 years (Ernie Tetrault),” meaning he wasn’t there long. Also, a newspaper article @scrabbleship shared with me on this thread a few months ago said Ernie retired on May 27, so possibly Marty was brought in to replace him. Anyways, thanks to YouTube channel wpdehistory, I was able to make this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sT45XDVneQ
He was still there at least very early into 1994, as this open proves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4iB2lmOfAU

  19. KTVI must’ve used the Chris Crane pack for a year I guess, cause we now have the first version of its Eyewitness News open.

I've never understood why they dumped the awesome Chris Crane music for Gari's EWN-- the Crane package would've really fit in given that they had just switched to Fox, but instead they chose to go with a package designed for ABC affiliates, which they weren't one of anymore. Doesn't make any frickin' sense.
