  1. When was the last time Sam Champion was on EWN This Morning? He’s been on GMA as a 6th host since early March with Brittany and Dani handling 4:30-7am. Not sure if he’s been on 10am but when I’ve tuned in it’s typically Dani.

Overall CBS 2 News is a clean cut solid news product. I definitely watch them more than I do Fox 5 or PIX 11. But again their presentation feels stiff minus a few personalities like Lonnie, Marcia and John Elliott.

This, their newscast has a corporate feel with no real personality. You can take WCBS and drop it in any other CBS O&O market without missing a beat.

  3. Yeah I was surprised that he wasn’t strongly considered for CBS Sunday Morning after the final Early Show relaunch.

He was easily the strongest of the network’s bench and was heavily utilized on Evening News, Face the Nation too.

Maybe Pedro Rivera or Michelle. It's just strange that Sandra isn't there at 11pm, the other times she was there with David Navarro.

When is this referring to? Sandra has been there with Bill most nights at 11pm while Sade has been on medical leave. The most likely reason she wasn’t at 11 yesterday is because she’s anchoring Sunday night’s newscasts with Joe for Oscars coverage.

  5. Sade had been anchoring solo at 11pm on Fridays since last year, she’s out right now. Mike is also largely viewed as Bill Ritter’s eventual successor and they’re not subtle about how they’ve positioned him for that.

It has a lot to do with lead-ins. WCBS had Judge Judy at 4 and the 5:00 was doing well. Then they lost Judge Judy and immediately fell. They picked up the show again and shot back up to #2.

WABC had Oprah at 4 and those viewers made them #1 at 5. The winning allowed the station to remain stable in terms of talent and presentation. When Oprah ended her show and WABC replaced it with a newscast, viewers were already so accustomed to Eyewitness News that they largely stayed with them.

Syndicated and network lead-ins are huge, along with stability (which is often a chicken-or-the-egg-type thing with winning).

This. Houston is a great example where the CBS affiliate historically struggled behind ABC and NBC stations until Oprah bolstered them into a competitive and then (although brief) a market leader. WFAA's lead in Dallas started to slip when Oprah ended her show.

Outside of that, it was always puzzling to me why CBS News and CBS stations generally performed so badly despite having the dominating entertainment division.

I just hope under this change, the O&O stations continue to keep their individuality and local news branding instead of making them all look alike. There is a charm to that indivualistic aspect of a news station versus them all looking alike and sounding the same.

I’m all about a mandate if it prevents stations from the on-air presentation WABC had in place for a long time.

Is Bill no longer doing Fridays at 11pm?

No, he’s been off Friday nights the last year or so I believe. Sade usually anchors solo on Friday nights with Mike joining her occasionally.

  9. Marza filled in at 11pm a few weeks ago. Sandra is doing 5 and 11pm as Sade’s fill in, with Lauren anchoring at noon. I’d guess David will join Sandra on Fridays at 11pm until Sade returns.

Pedro Rivera debuted on the weekend morning news today.

  10. What exactly did they do with that column back in the day? It’s always been there but I don’t remember all of these attempts to disguise it before. The techniques they’ve tried the last few iterations have all been somewhat distracting.

People here often say WABC is flashy. I can hear it in their writing historically. But, Compared to stations like WWOR or WSVN I'm having trouble seeing it. Maybe it's because they do as you say have a one-dimensional look.

WABC might be one of the most sensational and flashy local news stations I’ve seen outside of the Sunbeam operations. It’s not a bad thing or a knock, the format and style fits WABC perfectly.
