(WJLA had a campaign with Jeffrey Osborne back in the 80s that wasn't renewed due to $$$)

I'm pretty sure Jeffrey Osborne also did the "Show Me 5" promo song for KSDK in the mid-80s.

The open to an edition of WKBD's "The Ten O'Clock News" from April 20, 1988. That "KDFW 1990" theme probably was used here first:

Is the theme related to this image song? WGAL used it, too, and this theme!

KDFW, too. The news theme and promo song were also heard in San Francisco, but on different stations. KTVU used the news theme for their weekend 6:00; and KOFY had the promo.

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a TV station’s logo resemble an interstate sign. There is at least one radio station I know of that has a similar logo (KYKZ-FM in Lake Charles, LA), but their logo utilizes the complete interstate logo design, whereas KTXA’s interstate logo doesn’t.....

There's also this, which looks even worse. But it's also a microscopic market compared to DFW.

  4. CNN, like all of cable news, is an entertainment product at it's core. Why do you think CNN went with wall-to-wall coverage of that missing plane? Cable news is there to make money; the most money possible. All-day coverage of the president's tweets is what they believe will make them the most money, so that's what they cover.

  5. Not a video - but classic TV news history talk - after reading the passing of Ed, did a little searching, and this came up.

Great long article about the competitive dynamics in Houston TV news in 1994. KHOU usurping KTRK, and the downbeat mood at KTRK dealing with it. Even a mention of changing the theme.

This quote really hits the nail on the head:

[Marvin Zindler] says TV news is a "kindergarten game of show and tell. You show people and then you tell them what it is. Journalism does not show in the dictionary, I don't care what dictionary you have, as having anything to do with television or electronic media. I say it's show business and they all get mad."

  6. Actually Thom Allen also did voiceover work for WTSP in St. Pete during the “Stay In Touch With 10” era from 1983-1988. If you think about it his voiceover work really wasn’t just Post-Newsweek stations but also those in the Florida News Network news share agreement with WPLG, WJXT, WTSP, and WFTV (I don’t know if other Florida markets were in the agreement).

I haven’t lived in Florida since 2010 but last I heard Thom was doing voiceover work for the Autonation affiliated Auto Dealers in Florida.

The Florida News Network has always fascinated me. If I remember correctly, it germinated from from WTSP’s desire to compete with WTVT’s recent linkup with Hubbard's national CONUS satellite network (you could always tell a CONUS affiliate apart by whether they called their satellite truck “NewStar”). I’m pretty sure WPTV joined not too long later.

  7. WTSP finally hires a news director...

Kelly Frank comes to WTSP from WBNS in Columbus where she was ND since 2015:

Very interesting considering Tegna's approach to news is so different from WBNS, a station long considered to be the market leader. Meanwhile, WTSP's ratings are usually in last place, except in late news.

If their new news philosophy is now “be more like Dispatch”, then they may be alright.

  8. BTW, the "24-Hour News and Information Source/Station" slogan introduced with the "4 Strong" rebranding was the subject of a legal challenge filed by KOCO days after it took place. From Wikipedia (with articles from The Daily Oklahoman about the case linked in the quote):

Within months, KFOR switched to obliquely referencing its 24-Hour News Source format in the news slogan it used until the fall(?) of '97, "Where the News Comes First, 24 Hours a Day," which was also used by sister station WHO during that period. In hindsight, KFOR's on-air look during the News Team 4 era was basically a knockoff (unintentional or not) of KOCO's then-recently-introduced John Christopher Burns package. The "4 Strong" branding is even reminiscent of KOCO's "5 Alive" moniker.

Back in the real early 90s, WTVT branded as "Your 24-Hour News Source"; while WFLA branded (though not as prominently) as "Your 24-Hour News Station" (jump to 0:57). I don't know if any legal action was ever taken, and WFLA ditched the slogan pretty quickly (along with the magnificent graphics that went with it). WTVT kept the tagline until the switch to Fox.

  9. With Chris Sloan's clips, they're NEVER what they say they are on the box. (Not that that's a bad thing!)

It's a KFOR morning newscast complete with open, two bumps, AND A VERSION OF THEIR IMAGE PROMO!

It sounds like a Peters theme to me. What do you think?
