Another KABC newscast, this one a 1972 one from Obsolete Video with what could be described as rather unusual shenanigans involving Stu Nahan and the KABC weatherman (don't recall his name) along with celebrity filled commercials (including future Dallas star Linda Gray in a Geritol ad and a National Airlines commercial featuring Kim Basinger as she was just starting out)

The weatherman? Dr. George Fischbeck (or simply Dr. George); holder of AMS Seal #92, a bit of an unusual thing to have in LA.

I was thinking the same thing. Mr. NBC voicing a news open for and ABC O&O? Dark should be voicing a news open for rival station KRON 4, which was indeed the NBC affiliate at the time.

Shouldn't it be Mr. ABC himself Ernie Anderson doing the voiceover for THIS KGO open?

I heard Anderson's voice in the other two other opens using the rare KGO theme

Well, Ernie would get his “revenge” (in a manner of speaking) four years later when he voiced the open for a CBS affiliate. Maybe they were allowed to do voice work for another network’s local stations.

One of the things I love about YouTube is that you can encounter newscasts that you've never seen before. Well, what I am going to share with you is a rare newscast from WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina. This newscast aired back in 1984, and features news anchors Carl Clark (formerly of KHQ-TV in Spokane, Washington) and Kim Brattain. You can go to 1:49 and view the news open using an open cut from Gari's classic "Hello News" music package.

Don't forget future former Arizona congressman J.D. Hayworth.

Tampa Bay TV Weather Pioneer Roy Leep has passed away. He was 88.

Leep worked at WTVT from 1957 to 1997. He was regarded as a leader in broadcast meteorology and pioneered radar and satellite observations along with tropical weather.

Sad. He posted weather updates on his Twitter right up until last Thursday. Head in the clouds right to the end.

Interesting to see the late Ed Schultz (MSNBC, RT) in the open.

I definitely did a double take when I saw Ed. That ended up sending me to this video with a 1987 open and Ed live from the Metrodome with an interview with Marv Albert (misindentified by the chyron guy as Herb Alpert).

  6. I think I figured out who did the epic KCRA 1993 Theme. Take a listen to this bumper, if you may..

Sounds a lot like Non-Stop, doesn't it? It wouldn't surprise me if Non-Stop did some themes we may have never suspected, they were known to switch up their instrumentations a lot more than other firms. Their WGHP Theme is an excellent example, it sounds completely different from the likes of First News and News Central.

I don't know whether to post this here or in the international thread, but here's a short intro from KCBS as seen from South Korean broadcaster KBS from 1987.

That full open, with what I suspect is a Michael Randall theme, is definitely going in my wish list.

Ah yes, the Clarendon package! Very...different look for local TV.

The theme they were using in the mid-2000s has to be another piece of David Miller work, even if the NMSA has no listing.

Well, KTVK is very different station; though I'm sure you knew that already. 🙂

Wanted to bring this to the attention of the music hounds. Tuesday? Silvertree (which was formed at the start of '84)?

    Dead ringer for Tuesday.

And speaking of Tuesday, I'm pretty sure these promos from WCPX are from Tuesday, as well. The first one even has the same musical signature as Tuesday11. The WCPX 1982 themes might very well be from Tuesday11, possibly a different package, but definitely Tuesday.

I just uploaded this, but I always find it interesting when station IDs include their owner or ownership group in some fashion. This one is somewhat of a rarity in that the owner mentioned (Gulf Broadcasting) only owned KTXH for about a year, and the sale to Taft Broadcasting was announced at about the time that this particular clip was recorded - February 1985.

As I opined in the clip, Taft did a better job of exploiting the "20 Vision" brand that had been established by the initial owner - Grant Broadcasting, and it had been somewhat inconsistently used post sale to Gulf. It doesn't even occur in this clip. Taft launched the version that is arguably most familiar to viewers in the area later that year with a logo that lived on until 1993 when the Paramount branding went into effect.

You can see a brief snippet of a Gulf ID at 1:28 in this clip from...KESQ.

KFMB 1977 Explaining San Diego's Big switch (KGTV to ABC and KCST, now KNSD to NBC)

This switch actually ended up having a domino effect all the way in Milwaukee. Storer was so steamed at ABC for disaffiliating with KCST; that they ended up pulling ABC away from WITI.

Compare to the '87 & 88 intro of WSVN's 11pm News intro. You'll notice the difference in the NewsCenter 7 Tonight opening. The NBC peacock on their Satellite truck (Skycom 7) in the 1988 11pm open was removed knowing that 'SVN is losing its NBC affiliate to 'TVJ in 1989.

Compare the 1985 open, and you'll notice that WSVN used to call it's sat truck Newstar 7 before changing it to Skycom. Why change? Because Newstar was a trademark of Hubbard's CONUS network; and around 1986 or so WTVJ would supplant WSVN as the CONUS affiliate in Miami (perhaps foretelling NBC's identical move a few years later). Hence WSVN had to change their sat truck's name.
