  1.

I knew there wouldn't be an external search. Here's the new anchor lineup:

5 p.m.: Toya Washington, Patrick Paolantonio, Mark Baden

6 & 10 p.m.: Kathy Mykleby, Joyce Garbaciak, Patrick Paolantonio, Mark Baden, Dan Needles

So Tim Elliott likely takes Patrick's AM spot, they get a new breaking news anchor from a smaller Hearst market. Joyce was anchoring weekends if I'm not mistaken, so they will need to find a replacement there as well. Here's the very long winded release.

I think WISN made the right moves here.

So they're going with a three anchor format at 6 and 10? Interesting.

  2. Following a third place finish in February sweeps, WDJT announced they will be expanding their locally produced programming.

They will launch an hour long 4pm newscast, anchored by Michelle McCormack and Bill Walsh, on March 30th. They will also launch a new 7am Sunday morning program, hosted by Mike Strehlow, on April 5th, appropriately called "CBS 58 Sunday Morning". Station Vice President and GM Mark Strachota says the show will be a "local companion to 'CBS Sunday Morning'."

They also included this photo of Strehlow in front of the "CBS 58 Sunday Morning" logo. I'm not entirely sure where it was taken, because it looks absolutely nothing like the rest of their studio. It's also possible it was shot in front of a green screen with a graphic added later.

  3. WISN has launched a new image campaign called "Where will 12 News take you tonight?". Basically highlights how they bring you all the big stories and events happening in Milwaukee. The main thing I found interesting is that there is zero use of Hearst's triangled look they usually use for everything; instead opting for a squared off blue, yellow, and black look.

Has anyone else noticed Hearst stations in other markets doing this?

Video can be seen on the homepage of wisn.com, there is no option to embed.

  4. As I mentioned in the No Emotion Box, TMJ4 in Milwaukee announced that the morning team of Vince Vitrano, Susan Kim, Brian Gotter, and TaTiana Cash will be pulling an "all nighter" following the Super Bowl, anchoring Live at 10 following the game and Live at Daybreak the next morning.

I've never heard of any other station doing this before, but it almost makes sense, considering Live at 10 probably won't start until 11:30-midnight, and Live at Daybreak starts a few hours later at 4:30am.

  5.

Dunno where to put this, but I have NEVER seen a ratings book like this in Milwaukee (even though it's always been a competitive market). Only 0.4 ratings points separated #1 WTMJ and #4 WISN at 10pm in the October book.

And just as those numbers come out, it appears as if WDJT may have shot themselves in the foot with their story on pitbulls last night, which ignited a social media firestorm. I have never seen so many posts against a news station, calling them "biased", "idiots", and my personal favorite, "narrow minded inbreds".

It also sparked this image popping up all over Facebook.

  6. Jason Newton is leaving WISN to join WBAL as a morning anchor. According to the Baltimore Sun, he is being groomed to be "the anchorman of the future"...whatever that means.

  7. All sorts of happenings in Milwaukee.

    WTMJ

-Reporter Nick Montes is leaving for a freelance job at KTTV in LA.

    WITI

-Courtney King joins FOX 6 Sports, replacing Brandon Cruz who goes back to his usual gig as a reporter.

-Starting this fall, a new hour long 4pm show called "Studio A" will debut, moving Judge Judy back to 3pm.

-Former FM102.1 morning co-host Brian Kramp will be the entertainment beat reporter for "Studio A".

-Ted Perry will switch from the 5pm newscast to the 6pm newscast, and will also co-host "Studio A". He stays on the 10pm news.

-Katrina Cravy will leave "Real Milwaukee" to co-host "Studio A" with Perry.

-Morning co-host/reporter Angelica Duria will take the spot vacated by Cravy on "Real Milwaukee".

    WISN

-Toni Valliere joins WISN from KSN in Joplin. She will anchor the evening weekend newscasts vacated by Shelby Croft.

-Meteorologist Chris Gloninger, previously of WRGB in Albany, takes the spot of Luke Sampe on weekend evenings.

-Jason Newton switches from 5pm anchor/reporter to weekday morning co-anchor.

-Craig McKee takes Newton's spot, meaning he will co-anchor at 5, 6, and 10.

-Portia Young moves from weekday mornings to weekend mornings.

-Joyce Garbaciak returns to her first semi-regular role since leaving WITI in 2005, joining Valliere to co-host the 10pm news on Sundays.

    Whew...everybody got that?

  8.

Just read on the Twitters that WISN's Luke Sampe will be taking the chief meteorologist job at WFRV. Not sure when he'll be starting. He's not entirely a stranger to the Green Bay market; his bio mentions an intern stint at WGBA.

Surprising move there. He still comes across as very green on TV, although he has come a long way since starting at WISN.

  9. I didn't notice this until last night so I don't know how long it's been this way, but Journal has trademarked the phrase "You ask. We investigate." for their stations' I-Teams.

  10. WDJT's morning anchor Jennifer Tomazic is on her way to Pittsburgh. Her last day is today. Not sure what she'll be doing in Pittsburgh, though.

Talk about a mass exodus from Milwaukee from all four stations. Shelly Walcott, Jen Lada, Dario Melendez, Jennifer Tomazic, all in the past 3 months.
  11. Anyone know if they're getting new graphics? Audrey Puente tweeted a photo saying "going over new weather graphics with Mike Woods" I wonder if they are updating all the graphics or just weather ones? Btw Audrey has been working 15 days straight being that Shay Ryan left and Nick Gregory has been out the past 2 weeks

I've heard that Fox O&Os are set to get a graphics update, but that's not until later this year.

  12. WISN news director Lori Waldon has been promoted to the same position at Hearst sister station KCRA in Sacramento.

From Duane Dudek, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

WISN-TV (Channel 12) news director Lori Waldon has been appointed news director at two Hearst stations in Sacramento, Calif.

Waldon will be moving on to KCRA-TV and KQCA-TV.Her last day will be Aug. 10.

According to a release from the station "Waldon's promotion is a result of her outstanding job performance leading the news team during her tenure" at WISN-TV. While here she oversaw the station's news coverage if of some of biggest local stories including the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl run, the budget battle in Madison and the recall election.

WISN-TV is locked in a pitch battle for news ratings supremacy with WTMJ-TV (Channel 4). WISN-TV won the last important ratings period in May, with help from Donald Driver.

His appearance on "Dancing with the Stars" drove ratings for the show through the roof, and enough viewers stayed tuned afterward to help WISN-TV win the 10 p.m. news race, with an 8.5 household rating average. The station ALSO won the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.

Waldon is a native of California and had previously worked as assistant news director at KVOR-TV and KMAX-TV in Sacramento, before coming to WISN-TV in 2006.

A national search will be conducted to find her replacement. Whoever they hire could have his or her hands full. The station's 10 p.m. newscasts lost about 50,000 viewers during its week long blackout on Time Warner Cable, and now is facing

Here is the complete press release announcing her departure.

Her last day at WISN 12 is Friday, Aug. 10. WISN 12 will begin an immediate search nationwide and internally for her replacement.

  13. WGBA is getting....gasp!...a NEW SET!!!!!! And it doesn't look too bad [though it is small!] Teaser pic from their Facebook page.

    https://sphotos-b.xx...308690876_o.jpg [not embedding---too huge!]

No word on HD, though I've seen one of their photogs in the field recently with a P2, so they are making some inroads in that direction....

If JBG paid a design group any amount of money to come up with that, I would ask for a refund.

  14. Didn't want to create a new thread for this but wanted to note WHBQ's interesting campaign the past two weeks touting a "major" announcement they are supposedly making tomorrow on Good Morning Memphis. Don't know what it is, and it will almost surely be underwhelming, but their method of promotions for it has been rather creative and does have a lot of people talking, especially on social media. They've been running numerous promos both on-air and through social media, and have been using a TMZ-style format with the actual TMZ staff doing intros to fake segments with "paparazzi" bombarding Fox 13 staff with questions about the impending announcement.

Its generated a fair amount of buzz on social media, especially today with a lot of people guessing what the announcement will be, from staff changes to location changes and various other wild and humorous speculation. Like said, I'm guessing this "major" change will be no big deal at all, but it has accomplished its objective it seems, just in time for the start of sweeps tomorrow. If its something truly major, I'll report back.

    Seems interesting.
