  1. It's not just the set.... which looks like the inside of a raspberry blue Slurpee machine at 7-11.

I started taking a look at GMA again recently after not watching it for decades.  I kid you not... let's just say the last time I really watched was the Hartman/Gibson/Lunden eras.  Yup, call me Rip Van Winkle; I'm that old.  Hey, I was busy at work putting food on the table and a roof over my head.  I've recently had some time away from work and decided to take a peek.  The program nowadays is an unwatchable trainwreck of show stacking,  plus a 2 hour Disney Corporation infomercial.  They grimly report about 400,000 Coronavirus deaths in one segment with super sad faces... and a split second later (with practically zero transition) they overexcitedly shill the newest Star Wars/Muppets crap that's going to be on Disney+ with a toothy grin.  Can't forget the latest Disney park updates as well.🙄  I hope people who are watching GMA are taking it with a grain of salt.  Robin Roberts and George Snuffleupugus are great anchors, but their talents are being wasted on the wrong show.

  2. KCRA 1985... Where The Karaoke Comes First.  Somebody needs to tell them this whole "Singing Machine" fad will never catch on! 😜

Good to see the old KCRA neon lit up @ 3:31.   It needs to be restored and moved to the front of the building.

  3. I don't think CBS affiliates would go for an already floundering network newscast @ 10pm leading into their local news @ 10:30 or 11.  I hope you all remember the 10pm  "Jay Leno Show" debacle years ago.  If full on production of primetime gets to be a problem, give the affiliates the 10pm slot for local news and run the revamped "CBS News Tonight @ 10:30" (or whatever they want to call it & anchored by someone besides Norah)  and then the  "Late Show w/Colbert" at 11.  That also gives Colbert a jump start on Fallon & Kimmel.

Overall, it's gonna be a tough sell for Viacom/CBS to give up an hour of primetime $$$$$$ @ 10 for this kind of experiment.

  4. It’s been my opinion that in situations like these the FCC should take action and fine the offender.  Hunt the guy down, fine him $100,000...  If he can’t pay, garnish his wages and collect any IRS refunds he has coming for the rest of his life until it’s paid in full.

  5. IMHO here's what I have noticed about Norah from the very beginning:  She doesn't smile enough.  The old adage goes, "It's not what you say, but how you say it."  I'm not saying she needs to smile while delivering sad stories and the like, (this is gonna hurt and will sound cruel, not trying to be sexist, but I need to be honest) ....but she needs to lose the RBF.  If you don't know what RBF is.... google it.  She's a very good looking woman, but I don't think her expressions while delivering serious stories are very inviting.  It's almost like she has a scowl on her face.

There are plenty of female anchors out there who can deliver a heavy story without looking into the camera like you spilled purple grape juice on their new white couch.

Norah is not one of them.

    Some New M&As.

NBC is acquiring Telemundo affiliates in Sacramento & Salt Lake City, owned by Serestar Communications  for $21M.

Hmmmmm... do you think we might see some Boston-type shenanigans that might happen in Sacramento or Salt Lake?  I really couldn’t see NBCUni pulling the affiliation from KCRA or KSL though.

  7. Last week I found myself watching CNN’s coverage of the Reagan assassination, the space shuttle Challenger disaster and Desert Storm coverage on YouTube. It was what real journalism was... and should be today. Just straight reporting. FOX, MSNBC and CNN today are not news operations anymore. They are opinion channels. It’s a shame. Good reporting about world events is much more riveting to watch than a Brady Bunch split screen with six talking heads blabbering on and on about what the weird haired man posted on twitter today.

Hopefully these “news” nets find their way back to reporting the news again... but I’m not gonna hold my breath for that.

Of course the gray/tan set with wood and blue accents was the "in thing" in the 1980s. (WJW and KOVR nearly identical sets above, obviously done by the same firm). I'm just curious if anybody knows what companies did designs/fabrication in that era and if they're still around?

Figured I’d add a screen grab of WLKY circa 1987 in here too.

  9. When I saw Lester do the newscast out in that cold weather in Minnesota, I said how stupid it was for them to put him out there in the cold.He went to South Korea which was bitterly cold, then up have high elevation of being in the mountain and when you add, travel and jet lag it is now a mess. You don't put your top anchor out in no cold air to air a newscast.

This is one of the reasons why I don't like NBC and how they handle their talent. They overwork them, when you work and travel it brings down your immune system and a reason where there needs to be more bureaus to accomodate NBC News reporters. If they can't do that then use O&O affiliates as a source of reporting from fields or breaking news.

Really? You have to be kidding.

I’m pretty sure the direct deposit from Comcast every two weeks into Lester’s bank account makes up for the fact that he has to stand out in the cold.

  10. Now this a gem from Cleveland's Own Newscenter8.

KOVR 13 in Sacramento had a nearly identical set and graphics package beginning in April of ‘87 and lasting until maybe November of that same year if my memory serves me right. Video of that branding is pretty much nonexistent on the web. If anybody has any tape, please post!

They eventually got a KCOP rip-off logo changed the graphics and tweaked the set a bit.

  11. Apparently they both shop at the same black t-shirt store too. Lol.

I don’t mind Jeff Glor, but I think CBS should’ve went in a different direction and found somebody else to anchor. I have a feeling the CBS Evening News will eventually become a carbon copy of ABC’s World News Tonight. I hope that doesn’t happen.

  12. It was definitely '87, that's when they did the rebrand, ditched the logo we both use for our avatars, and brought in Dan Gray (who is clearly amused by Santa up there). Cheap is right- that KCOP knock-off logo wasn't introduced until later, initially it was just "KOVR 13 NEWS" in a bold, italicized version of the font CBS News used for lower thirds, odd for an ABC affiliate but perhaps foreshadowing its future as a CBS O&O?

And speaking of lower thirds, during the initial period of that set, while using the CBS-style font, the lower thirds were ginormous- almost like lower halves!

Those were huge lower thirds, especially with the large pink background behind the KOVR 13 NEWS text. I've tried looking for clips on YouTube with that branding, but have had no success. It was super short lived.
