  1. I'd say they could do a major refresh - I seriously doubt the new Comcast Innovation and Technology tower will be completed on time. I'm guessing 2018 move in time at the earliest. But then again they could start moving in before the tower is fully completed with that being said I doubt they would do any broadcasting from it while the tower is still a construction site. I never cared for the style of the set that much. You know they could even get a whole new set like how WNBC moved around in the past six or seven years. Now that they are a flagship they could get more money.
  2. Maybe the difference had to do with Monday being the Labor Day holiday? But to your second point how can a show make such big / aspirational changes without a turnover/change of staffs? I know they now have a new EP and anchorman but such drastic change does not come automatically with the changing of the guard.
  3. Now that I'm looking at it closer it appears they actually moved the desk up against the elevated catwalk where Rock Center was usually shot. When the show started you could see a crease from where they pushed the anchor desk and platform up against the elevated portion of the set. Now there is a larger monitor wall where all the television tchotchkes were. Updated:Just looked back at an old Rock Center and yes they moved everything to a different corner of the studio. They just simply removed the faux window framing.
  4. I know your talking about the quality of them being a video loop but do you remember the fake newsroom that BBC News piped in on those Barcos? http://jim-mann.com/?p=933
  5. I can't for the life of me figure out where the desk is located. Is it still in the same spot as it always has been? To the right hand side of the desk they had this rear projection wall that was used in the original NN/MSNBC news complex that was moved over. For a minute I thought they extended the elevated platform and placed the desk there. The one thing I do not like is their use of the LA bureaux as new background video loop. When they are on a tight shot it (to me and the people over at NewscastStudio who I tipped them off to) agreed with me that it made it appear that they were actually in LA. I know it's not discernible to the average viewer but as we news junkies would notice a thing like this. I wonder if the background was recorded/played out at 4K. https://twitter.com/newscaststudio/status/506982387801419776 I also wonder if they considered piping in the live camera feed as backdrop.
  6. The View is listed as part of their 77West 66th Street at ABC TV Center. I know their complex is made up of multiple buildings, so I'm guessing The View's old studio, is in a separate building from the offices of ABC News. Much like how if a corporate suite from has to go outside to get to the building that houses WABC. Maybe it's just me but if I was in charge when these buildings are purchased I'd find a way to get through without going outside - even if that involved clearing a route in the basement. For reference NBC's 30 Rock is made up of three buildings an east building, the west building, and a studio building. All are connected and level, meaning there are no changes in elevation from east to west. The only difference you would see is is an extra set of fire doors. They built 30 Rock this way so there could be three buildings on three foundations all adjacent to each other. This was all done to cut down on noise vibrations. Thanks to the Rockefeller Groups great planning people in the center would not have to go outside to get to another building. You go down to the concourse level and there is 10 Rockefeller Plaza's access right there. As for CBS I believe they own the block but from what I have seen the buildings are independent of one another.
  7. Just a reminder guys to make sure you check your season passes because of the name change if you want the show to record. Hell after Marianne Bannister left WBAL and Donna Hamilton took over her post at 6 and 11 PM, WBAL left the program title the same but updated the program description to "Donna Hamilton and Rod Daniels". For some unknown reason my TiVo interpreted it as a completely new show and wouldn't record. Then this year when Kai Reed left WJZ and the description was changed my TiVo didn't require any intervention. I don't see any immediate changes to the set since they just debuted that new 12x2 video wall. Maybe they will update the desk? Maybe one day down the line they will move their newscasts from the joint newsroom to a dedicated studio now that "The View" is moving to "Katie"' old studio now that one is available.
  8. Locally WBAL will only show the lower third when they come back from the commercial. If an anchor wasn't on camera when they came back from break their name will appear at their first appearance. Generally the chyron only appears on screen if there is something that needs to be added, the only time it stays on screen normally is when they do national news headlines.
  9. I follow NBC Artworks on Vimeo and never saw any un keyed Today Show opened.
  10. Why is it that every Gannett station feels the need to do a segment to introduce the viewers to new graphics? Most stations wouldn't even bother to mention the change unless say the graphics were included with a new set. How dumb are they to need the complete chyron be explained to them? There is nothing truly revolutionary to their graphics package. The lower third has and always will display what the story is about and the information. A lot of stations already featured a news ticker and I'm truly scared for society if people couldn't identify the time and temperature without being told where it was located. The only thing that may be different is the upcoming rundown and the color coding system. The Uncle Barky post mentioned that their weather caster Ashton Altieri stated that his weather forecasts will be 20% more accurate? Please explain to me how new graphics can do that. The only way a forecast could truly differ is if they switched weather systems to either AccuWeather (real quick why is it that a lot of AccuWeather stations seem to use some of the same slides in their forecasts with no local graphics?) or WSI. Yes I know most of those questions are rhetorical. I still thought that Sinclair being cheaper they would rather go full on with robotic cameras. Yes the upfront cost will be higher but once they are in service they would no longer have to own for a camera operator. As for my distaste in news music it really doesn't matter since there are so many other things to discuss on here. As I stated I just want the newscast to start because I would rather spend the 30-45 seconds used for an additional story or a longer piece. I am more interested in the technical aspects of the broadcast from the automation, the equipment, graphics and their transmission/eng plant.
  11. I wrote this in the shout box but wish I saved the exact phrasing. If I was a television station I don't think I would want to promote that I was corporate siblings of USA Today. Don't get me wrong but USA Today would be the perfect newspaper for someone to read if they were just learning English.
  12. Does anyone know who built/modified Fox 45/ traffic tracker car? I haven't seen this design listed on AMT, Frontline or Level 3's websites. https://twitter.com/tomrodgersnews/status/485094601661755393 May need to refresh your page for the image to load.
  13. I think the new stations are dropping the reference for USA Today now the companies are being split apart. Which makes me wonder what's going to happen with the local websites? They are all moving over to presto and what about stations like KPNX which are integrated closely with their newspapers? I think stations should buy those combo pedestal units from Vinten Radamec that can be robotically operated and manually operated. Oddly enough here in at WBFF in Baltimore they have no robotic cameras or even PTZ heads. Their cameras are are mounted on cheap Vinten tripods with wheels: https://twitter.com/tomrodgersnews/status/491915676697636864 You may need refresh to see the above tweet. But I never got fondness or attachment to news music maybe it's because I just want the broadcast to start.
  14. That is most likely their meeting the FCC requirements mandating that the station identify itself and the city of license either visually or aurorally at the top of the hour or as close to it. Most stations use small 10 pt text that is automatically inserted with out human intervention. Other stations like WTAE's sister insist going this route: The only time that huge logo appears is during newscasts because their opening include the required text: [yt]7tAA9J2lpvE[/yt] Most stations include it in their newscast opens and even on promos for the newscast and or syndicated fair just to be safe.
  15. Did it already air in St. Louis? I wonder if it's meant to be broadcast on all stations. The only reason why I could think it would occur from Baltimore is because they could be cheap and didn't want to fly representatives from the NAACP HQ, if they were involved at all. But they still could of used an insert studio. Update: It appears it was a national town hall that occurred at 7PM EDT. None of the the stations here in Baltimore carried it.
  16. I have to side with David Smith thought he bought a farm without any leases (I think a realtor could get in trouble because the contract stated that there were no leases). Subsequently offered to buy out the lease in full and the value of the lossed crop. In March 2013 Smith tried to terminate the lease because the farmer violated some terms pertaining to erosion. State law requires six months notice by the landlord prior to the termination of a lease and requires soil conservation to prevent erosion. After this issue occurred the farmer broke down a fence and locked the gate preventing Smith from accessing rest of the property and proceeded to replant his crop. I am not sympathetic one bit to the farmer because he has had run ins with the law before. The farmer performed an illegal burn on leased land which caused a big enough fire and smoke for the fire department to be called. The farmers prohibited the fire fighters from extinguishing the fire. Police officers were called in and he would not listen to their orders. Consequently he was charged with failure to obey a reasonable police order and obstructing fire fighters - his charges were dismissed. Then a few years ago the farmer threatened a woman who was riding her horses alongside but not on his leased land. While he was threatening the woman he spooked another horse which bolted causing a 73 year old man to fall off. After the event transpired he went to the woman's house kicked her dog and shoved her while cursing at her in front of her children. The woman subsequently had a peace order taken out against him.
  17. But how are The List, Right This Minute and maybe The Now any different from each other? I still can't believe that there are so many viral video out there to drive two and a half hours a day of original programming. But Scripps clearly wants to go the cheap route by using videos posted to YouTube by claiming fair use.
  18. I just looked up how to get tickets to The Chew and appears they tape two shows on Tuedays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM. As for ABC time zone differences I believe they are the only network that does not offer a specific central time feed. I believe they expect the stations to tape delay their morning and day part programming. According to people that look for satellite wild feeds using a professional grade satellite receiver and a big ugly dish they only provide feeds for East, West and Mountain. It appears that CBS and Fox only offer East and West coast feeds while NBC provides the feeds for East, Central, Mountain and West.
  19. Looks like WPBF got it's set refreshed in the past year. Around 1:31 they have a desk around their "tree" the backgrounds appear updated. [yt]t40jVeP5XHs[/yt] A live desk stand up location. [yt]hHzZKAebYqY[/yt] Their home base also appeared to be updated.
  20. At least the Chew isn't a live show. But what's stopping them from airing it at 1PM?
  21. I was watching WBFF's weather forecast and they showed the radar with how heavy the rain is. Now normally television stations show a range of colors of how light - heavy the rain or precipitation is expected to be (WMAR and WJZ always show the key, WBAL only shows it if theirs a hurricane or snow). But today I noticed WBFF did something completely different they only showed five colors signifying how heavy the rain is supposed to be. Normally I don't notice the key because I know what the colors mean and how to interpret that map but I must say I found WBFF's approach refreshing which made the map much easier to read. I also imagine the colors are much easier if to determine how heavy the precipitation is falling if you are color blind. Now I must say if you want the simplest map to read you should watch BBC Weathers forecast where precipitation is blue where the heavier the precipitation is expected the darker the blue is.
  22. He stays neutral which is difficult being at Sinclair which used him to record robocalls and political polling. Because of his position he has more likely required to do the recordings rather than him going out and doing it on his own (I don't believe a reporter that has ethical standards would volunteer to do robocalls or polling). Most political polls are written in a way that is to be considered neutral so it does not sway the response but some of the questions seemed to be one sided.
  23. I've never seen one of their "Town Halls" locally despite being from Baltimore. If I recall didn't Mark Hyman moderate political debates for them? Here only their primetime anchors moderate debates it's sometimes Jeff Barnd but usually Melissa Gilbert. I do think some democrat politicians may object to Jeff Barnd hosting because Sinclair used him for political robocalls or political polling for republican causes (several of the questions had negative connotations.) I'm surprised they haven't done it before. I know NBC affiliate agreements make them air a newscast before Today, Nightly News, and their late night hours. I was looking at WJLA's ABC affiliation agreement requires them to air a minimum of a half hour before Good Morning America, ABC World News and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
  24. Im going to to further to as as long as the twitter logo never appears in a chyron I will be just fine. If you must put out a reporters or the stations twitter handle just do @rkolsen. There is a reason chyrons are designed for text only. I know this is the Sinclair thread but I look at other Hearst Stations (WBAL seems to be the lone exception), NBC's Look F, the CBS and Fox packages all look much better without the damn bird. Hell even WJZ's jerry rigged graphics look much better with out the twitter icon. A lot of those stations have a dark blue but let's keep the Twitter blue on for Easter eggs. I must be having a stroke I complimented WJZ graphics. OK time to think F.A.S.T. F for face - okay A for arm weakness - okay S for speech - okay T for time - got plenty of it. Back to my point the people that would follows your page would follow you anyway if you were any good.
  25. I'm curious are you watching on an old CRT? If so I think you may be out of luck, if your viewing it with out a cable or digital converter box because of the overscan. The whole point of them using a 16:9 layout is so they don't have to worry about the safe areas. Ideally the station should identify & update the auto format description for each program (and check it frequently). The benefit of active format description is so that if you are viewing the station in a wide screen but viewing a standard definition feed is that if the content is letter boxed it should automatically "zoom in" on the letterbox feed. Now granite it's not going to be HD quality but it will fill your screen. I remember reading an NBC document on it when they were starting to letter box content and one thing they said is that while the network may be sending a signal to go full 16:9 or letterbox a lot of television station encoders may not get the message and transmit it out to the viewers. Another issue is that the cable company may not be equipped to pass through a signal.
