'ABC News' in Australia has more of an emphasis on international events and hard news - as a public broadcaster, its newscasts are not primarily ratings-driven, unlike its commercial counterparts. ABC has foreign bureaux in Auckland, Bangkok, Beijing, Jakarta, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, London, Moscow, New Delhi, Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), Tokyo and Washington. Here are excerpts from local 7:00PM newscasts in Sydney and Melbourne:

Watching from Sydney, I remember when ABC News Sunday was an actual newscast - you know, with actual news (hey, Carole Simpson!). It just felt like I was watching garbage from the internet. I don't think they even understand the market for news on the weekend. And that Tom Llamas guy is pretty annoying. ABC seems to be all fluff and zero substance these days.

I am actually not sure about David's potential in the ratings. I get the similarity - on some levels - to Peter Jennings, but I also feel he is nowhere near in the league of Peter Jennings. He always strikes me as all hair and no substance. Having said that, he seems nice and I wish him well.
