“What’s New with Jae and Betz.” And poor Russ Mitchell relegated to a “newsreader” role. Kathie Lee and Hoda. Every broadcast. Every day. Kenny Crumpton doesn’t even pull this crap in the mornings on Fox 8.

If you can bear 3+ minutes of Mike Polk trying to get children to understand the 'new' WKYC programming schedule... https://youtu.be/_yv753eDTZc My guess...if he went to a Giant Eagle parking lot and asked adults the same questions, nobody would know what he's talking about. How much longer until we can be done with this and just call it "Channel 3 News" again?

You mean Lynna Lai, Danielle Serino, Monica Robins (who briefly anchored at 7 with Eric Mansfield before Robin Swoboda arrived), Chris Tye, Dorsena Drakeford and Tiffany Tarpley, among others? Yeah, I get that. That’s why the Jay Crawford hire is a waste. They could’ve had Betsy and ANY of the ladies mentioned above and did some sort of “Friends at 5” thing like sister WLTX... And yes, Jay Crawford was supposed to do noon AND five. https://www.crainscleveland.com/media/jay-crawford-formerly-espn-will-join-wkyc-fall Also - speaking of Robin Swoboda, her announced YouTube show must not be happening either.... https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wkyc.com/amp/article/features/robin-swoboda-returns-to-wkyc-with-new-youtube-show/95-2bd225a4-e58c-43fd-8916-1aed25a86cf3

That's the thing. Betsy Kling is actually a very good anchor. And from what I can tell, she's arguably WKYC's most popular personality right now. But if they're simply going to reproduce the failure that was "Lunch Break" at 5pm - people are going to be crying to get their Dr. Phil back at 5! This is the time for them to finally step into this century with 5pm news...and I fear they're going to completely screw it up.

Bumped this up to share that “3News” is using animated versions of their anchors to promote their new 5pm “newscast.” The madness continues.
  6. According to the comments section to that video, that theme was remembered fondly. And after hearing it for the first time in a while, I guess it isn’t so bad...relatively speaking. TEGNA really didn’t need to change anything from the 2013 package, aside from minor updates. “This is Home” and their truly innovative graphics package have set the tone for all broadcast design as we see it today. (Even as the current package is a step back in terms of intentional, grid-bases design.)
  7. Best decision WKYC has made in a while. She’s surprisingly versatile and has done a great job filling in at the desk over the past year or so. I do feel badly for other sidelined and underutilized anchor talent at WKYC, like Lynna Lai and Danielle Serino (who both fit in perfectly during the heyday of 19 Action News then moved over to 3).
  8. Same here. Music is definitely the best part of this whole thing. I never understand why stations (not just Scripps) use a "muted" blue mixed with a more royal blue...in the same package. Those blues clash.
  9. Scripps should hire them! Beautiful evolution of the Limerick package. This and WOIO’s should be an option for other Gray stations.
  10. Seems like they’re doing it for the duopolies that don’t necessarily have any brand equity or ratings pull - i.e. ABC22/Fox 45 in Dayton. If this were 15 years ago, I could see them doing it in Columbus, but WSYX/WTTE are pretty strong these days in that increasingly boring market.
  11. Cammy Dierking officially announced her departure from WKRC, following the lead of her former co-anchor Rob Braun: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cincinnati.com/amp/2506665001 Time to completely overhaul WKRC.
  12. I would guess some of that logo duplication is courtesy of VDO, who created packages for both stations in the early 2000’s (WSMV’s short-lived package with the “[4]” and “Seize the Day.”)... Kinda like how KOB ripped off WABC’s “Eyewitness News” word mark after having a package created by the same firm...(Giant Octopus perhaps?)
  13. WKYC’s Monica Robins has announced she has a brain tumor. https://www.wkyc.com/mobile/article/news/health/3news-monica-robins-brain-tumor-story/95-552b537d-f6a5-44d1-a795-20782592a963 I wondered why she hasn’t been on air for a bit. Prayers and positive thoughts to a successful surgery and recovery for her.
  14. Not necessarily. The “logo” that appears on screen doesn’t always correspond with newscast branding. For example, the logo on WKYC’s graphics read “WKYC 3” yet they were called “Channel 3 News.” Or WTOL’s just says “WTOL 11” but they go by “WTOL 11 News at XX.”
  15. WTOL’s Dick Berry retires Sunday after 40 years: https://www.toledoblade.com/a-e/tv-radio/2019/09/27/after-four-decades-at-wtol-tv-toledo-reporter-dick-berry-retires-sunday/stories/20190928049 Candid interview and great perspective from an actual journalist. "The whole media business has become more corporate ... which is affecting how the news is covered, as well as the people you see entering the news business," he said. "A lot of them are not qualified to be in the news business. I just wonder how they got to be where they are.”
  16. WKYC has starting doing this during their 7pm show...(Not Gray, I know - but thought it was worth sharing.)

I agree with this, however, at the moment, WKYC airs significantly less news each day. They have less time to fill, and a deep bench of talent...and this is what we get? Their limited schedule should make them hyper-focused on broadcasting actual news.

    The "3" Thread

Perhaps, but I see heavy “fluff” influence on all their newscasts - and in a top-20 market like Cleveland, we could use actual NEWS. A piece on White Claw and Polk giving away swag in an 11pm newscast is ridiculous. Or, maybe not if they want to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

It is the “mastermind” of a gent with no broadcast design experience who admitted he “didn’t watch broadcast news.” https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-forgetta-a2313b44 Their “Director of Content’s” claim to fame is the 4th hour of Today. https://www.cleveland.com/tv-blog/2018/08/today_show_producer_adam_miller_named_director_of_content_at_wkyc.html As for GM Micki Byrnes? How could she let this happen? Gotta wonder what her husband (former WKYC GM Brooke Spectorsky) thinks of this evolution...

A longer review to come...perhaps. But look - even this would’ve been better. (Actual screencap from “Front Row” 3 on 3 at 7...)

    The "3" Thread

I posted too soon - and didn’t edit my initial post. The other promos and videos feel like a “sizzle reel” of sorts. I appreciate the custom graphics package because now, they are “practicing what they’re preaching” in terms of developing a new and unique product. It’s more than I expected - I was expecting the same TEGNA graphics with a new logo slapped on. So, an unexpected surprise. We shall see how it goes!

    The "3" Thread

It debuts Sunday at 11pm from what I hear - but here is a story from their website. https://www.wkyc.com/mobile/article/about-us/the-new-3-news-more-of-what-you-love/95-4da0085b-feb2-433b-a62b-becba28fa774 From the looks of those promos, it looks like they used their quota of stock video from iStock...and then some. Champaign bottles and shopping bags...something “marvelous” is coming. Ok, then
  23. I think WTHR and WBNS have “minimalist” enough logos that the 1-color (White) versions will translate nicely to the TEGNA graphics. They (thankfully) didn’t change WTOL (even with that false alarm), so I think we’re likely to see those logos remain for a bit. Had WTHR not refreshed their logo a few years back, it might have been a different situation. With all this said, I could be completely wrong and both could be in for a downgrade a la WKYC. (But I’ve discussed my disdain for that more than I needed to, LOL .)

This explains a lot - the station’s creative director had no previous TV experience and admitted in this interview that he did not watch local TV. https://www.wkyc.com/mobile/article/entertainment/television/liveonlakeside/liveonlakeside/95-243d301f-06ca-4369-b280-50eafcfd45ca
