  2. WDHN is another station that has languished under Nexstar.....the signal barely reaches outside of Dothan, while WTVY is powerful enough to cover Panama City itself, and was their long-time CBS affiliate until Gray signed on WECP. I would imagine some form of consolidation is imminent with WMBB...
  3. Red also happens to be the "sports" color, so it's probably a coincidence seeing as how the Cavs' colors are Wine and Gold.
  4. WKYC is taking some slight liberty with the Gannett graphics in their coverage of Lebron James. The color-coding has disappeared in favor of red lines (or wine since it's one of the Cavs' colors), and some supers have worked in some gradient images of Lebron on the right side of some of the lower thirds. Have any other stations taken such liberty with the package, with all of its color-coding and uniformity?
  5. And to add insult to injury....their twitter was hacked... http://www.theind.com/news/indreporter/18120-oh-klfy-you-just-can-t-catch-a-break
  6. In Mobile/Pensacola, WKRG sweeps all of the time periods in May, followed by WALA, WEAR and WPMI. WALA was 2nd for most time periods, except for 5pm where WEAR came in 2nd. WEAR was 3rd for all time periods except for 5pm, and WPMI was dead last in all time periods, some by a WIDE margin. http://lagniappemobile.com/may-sweeps-show-wkrg-looking-strong/ (It's not mentioned what demos these may be, but they're probably household numbers) Also mentioned is that Blake Brown has left WKRG as a reporter, and elected not to renew his contract.
  7. Serpentine was NBC's font of choice for their Nightly News back in the mid 80s, soon after Tom Brokaw became the sole anchor. Many affiliates at the time worked it into their local branding and on-air supers. It was to NBC as CBS's extensive use of Serifa (or something like it) back in the 1980s that was heavily adopted by their O&Os and affiliates. I'm thinking there was so much of this so-called standardization back in the days when CGs were more limited, and before TrueType fonts worked their way into daily life. Plus, if a network commissioned or licensed a font, it would make sense to deploy it to any willing affiliate at the time to cut down on costs, since it was a major ordeal to update character generators, instead of today using PCs for everything and having thousands of fonts bundled into software. Switching gears, It does feel that Nexstar is slowly rebranding their acquisitions. I'll bet you that within a few months, WMBB will have a new logo and brand. I do not see them keeping an ex-Media General logo that's a decade old that Hoak kept alive through their ownership. (Same goes for Gray and KALB). As for a brand....the news director who's been posting to their facebook page, has been really hyping LOCAL (by typing it in all caps). For example..... asking on their page "A follow-up to our previous question, what does LOCAL mean to you?" and "We are 'Your LOCAL Elections Headquarters' and we are here for you." Local 13, anyone?
  8. Longtime feature reporter Darwin Singleton has been promoted to morning anchor at WPMI. http://lagniappemobile.com/singleton-promoted-morning-anchor/ He replaces another WPMI veteran, Pat Greenwood, who is leaving WPMI at the end of the month to take a position with the University of South Alabama's athletics department.
  9. It looks like they are not using the LEDs on the plexiglass walls. I don't know if I like this. If that's the case, I would at least change them to a different color, if they are capable of doing that. Most LED's can change to pretty much anything, including white light.
  10. I wonder how much of a change it was.....everything looks the same as it was in widescreen SD (I can't tell from their live stream). Perhaps the switcher or the studio cameras was the only thing keeping them from going full HD. For anyone in Charlotte, does anything look jagged or upconverted? I'm actually looking forward to the Gannett graphics. The current ones are very cheap looking, and were drastically different, even compared to all of the old Belo-era graphics. Plus, "Right Here Right Now" will finally be put out of it's misery.
  11. ABC is hinting at converting the channel to some type of "news channel". It would be great for the O&Os, and the ABC affiliates that carried it, but I highly doubt the other non-ABC stations would carry a rival network's news effort.
  12. If Gannett is serious about finishing up their HD upgrades, WCNC is definitely priority #1. WWL and WHAS are in markets where MULTIPLE stations have not made the upgrade to HD! (New Orleans only has WVUE in HD and Louisville has WAVE and WDRB in HD). Hearst has also resisted going HD with WLKY and WDSU. New Orleans is likely the largest market in the country with only ONE HD newscast.
  13. It's all been downhill since the introduction of the E/I guidelines of the 1990s....and rogue affiliates pre-empting these shows for weekend news. With the unfavorable demographics and all the restrictions of advertising during these shows, it's no wonder that kids programming has largely abandoned broadcast television for cable, and now Netflix and hulu....
  14. I wonder why WJW never jumped back on the 11pm news bandwagon. Many viewers were accustomed to their 11pm news back in their days as a CBS affiliate, and if FOX would have acted on it during their ownership, it could have hampered WOIO's ability to climb out of 4th place as they did in the mid-2000s. Seeing as how WJW has gradually filled their day with news since then, they remain one of the holdouts NOT to expand to 11pm. As for WGN adding even more news...I could care less since I'm not in Chicago....I want my 9pm WGN America newscast back!!!!
  15. WJHG's logo was a point of contention when they switched from ABC back to NBC in 1982. Since WMBB (WDTB at the time) was a late-comer to the market, they wrestled away the NBC affiliation from WJHG, which was a joint ABC/NBC affiliate (and even CBS for a time) and the only station in Panama City from their founding to 1973. When WMBB and WJHG swapped affiliates, ABC balked at WJHG for their use of the "Circle 7" which was virtually identical to the ones used at their owned stations. A compromise was made that modified the logo to take out a portion of the circle when it met with the bottom of the "7". This logo lasted until the 1990s when a new logo using a regular "7" inside the circle, and has only had slight modifications to it ever since, with adding the NBC peacock and shading variations. Signs like the one seen in the video don't surprise me. Things have gotten very contentious between WJHG and WMBB over the past decade. The stations are neck-and-neck ratings-wise and it's a matter of what numbers are being sold....one station may claim household viewers, while another wins a key demo. Even during big stories involving both stations, the stations have gone as far to blur out the competitor's mic flag in the VO/SOTs! There's also been a lot of back and forth that you don't normally see in other markets. Music packages (The Great News Package), talent (Tom Lewis AND Amy Hoyt), Voiceover artists (David Nolin) and even slogans (Coverage You Can Count on) have crossed the Hathaway bridge numerous times over the last 20 or so years.
  16. Like a butt-dial, except it involved the mobile version of this website. I think it was the last thing on my phone browser.
  17. My apologies.....the last post was a pocket-post.
  18. An interesting fact....Joe Moore has been at WJHG longer than their competition has been ON THE AIR! He started there in 1971, and WMBB signed on (as WDTB) in 1973. Speaking of WMBB, it's been almost a month since the Nexstar sale was green-lighted. I wonder what the holdup is on the consummation?
  19. I've noticed some oddities as well when Family Guy aired at 9/8 central. Breaks have been mistimed and parts of the show have been cut off with periods of black. There seems to be something amiss between FOX and their affiliates.
  20. Elisa Amigo, weekend morning anchor at WJW left the station this past Sunday for an undisclosed primary anchor position...to be announced soon. http://www.cleveland.com/tv-blog/index.ssf/2014/04/elisa_amigo_leaving_wjw_channel_8_for_anchor_job_in_another_city.html#incart_m-rpt-1 If you read the comments, she makes light of this in a back-and-forth with the article's author.
  21. They are one of the few stations (aside from WTMJ) to have a 3pm news. Once they dump all of their syndicated programming, they will have more news than any local network affiliate in the US.
  22. Journal is looking to grow by taking in stations that will be spun from their JSAs http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/75927/journal-bullish-on-buying-jsa-spinoffs If they wanted to, they could be a company that could take Media General/LIN's and even Sinclair's problem stations off their hands. No conflicts would exist in any market in question, except for maybe Savannah, should WJCL/WTGS be spun off.
  23. Media General is laying off 45 corporate and "shared services" employees.... http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/media-general-to-cut-45-jobs_b119985 They did a similar layoff after they spun off the newspapers. A lot of this likely has to do with the overlap of Young positions, and whatever "de-centralizing" they plan on doing. Whatever they have, will pale in comparison to when LIN comes under their control (and may very well evolve the company to be more like LIN than Media General ever was) This actually makes a lot of sense, seeing as how the company doubled in size with the purchase of Young, and double after that when the LIN merger happens.....
  24. WFMJ took the lead soon after the sale of the WKBN-TV to Grapevine/Piedmont, and heavily capitalized on WKBN's sale to out-of-town interests by starting their push as "Our Valley's Only Locally Owned TV station", and quickly snatched up anchor Bob Black, who was canned by the new owners of WKBN soon after they took over. I'm not too sure about now, but WFMJ was dominant during this era. WKBN was fortunate enough to have been sold to New Vision, since most of the other Piedmont properties were dumped to owners who either drove them further into the ground, or sold them to companies that struck in-market deals to run them, forming some of the first SSAs in the industry to challenge ownership rules. WKBN then became the senior partner in the merger with WYTV since it was one of the few Benedek stations that was not folded into Gray, then Chelsey Television sold out to Parkin, which was a sidecar company of New Vision.
  25. Hopefully that is something Gannett is planning on fixing....same can be said for WWL and WHAS.
