  1. If there's been one failure of all of this, it's the quality of the video from their remotes. Some of the video is clearly Skype or similar consumer-level video conferencing. It's compressed all to heck and back, but it's generally watchable. The real failure however has been the streaming backpacks. The connection from those guys have been so unbelievably unreliable. I just watched Dr. Besser struggle through a planned segment where they took a tour of a maternity ward of a hospital where the video was worthless, and eventually they threw in the towel and gave up. I'm not saying that the backpacks don't have a place. They seem to work best for fairly stationary outdoor segments, not "walk and talks" indoors.
  2. While he looks quite a bit older, he doesn't sound old, if that makes any sense. Just listening to him makes me think he could jump right back into the anchor chair at any moment. (I sort of wish he would... he's right up there with Peter Jennings in the list of legends over at ABC News, IMO.)
  3. There have been so many fascinating moments in this conversation between Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolous. For one, George seemed amazed when Charlie commented something like "It must feel nice not having to fit a piece into 3 minutes 30 seconds." George responded "3:30? Try 2:30," indicating the show has shifted to a more rapid-fire style than it was in Charlie's era. There was a very honest discussion between Charlie and George about suggestion of bias in reporting, with an acknowledgement of the difficult position George is in given his background.
  4. The fascinating part of the live stream is that those of us who normally get the east coast broadcast are getting the rare opportunity to see the GMA West Coast broadcast.
  5. Just turned on the live stream... not what I expected. It is just going to be literally a 40 hour long edition of a standard GMA episode?
  6. That is interesting, as it leads to the question of when the Journal stations with VizRT will get the Scripps package.
  7. I get an immediate redirect to the front page of the Scripps template'd TMJ4.com when I go to that URL.
  8. I'm frankly shocked to hear that anyone would be that unfamiliar with the history of the Holocaust that they wouldn't recognize that symbol and it's origin. It's truly amazing, and a little disheartening. I'm going to hope that the use of the image was by someone out of ignorance, but I'm not sure that makes it any better in my mind.
  9. Read this Doonesbury comic strip. Trudeau really nailed the rather odd and stilted World News Tonight writing style.
  10. I'm somewhat surprised that WTMJ hasn't gotten The Now. They've got continuous newscasts from 3:00 to 6:30 (7:00, if you include "Wisconsin Tonight.") One would think they'd jump at the opportunity to rebrand at least a part of that, if only to reduce that nonstop block of news (albeit with a slightly different newscast).
  11. I like "NBC Now" for the very reason that Mannym13 pointed out; although they're slimming down on the editorial programs, they're not eliminating them entirely, and they probably wouldn't want to link the NBC News banner that tightly to the network for that reason. NBC Now, however, suggests "current" which could include news, but also current affairs editorial programs.
  12. They have the two anchors at the main desk, and when available, a third anchor at the "breaking news desk" (the extra pod in the main studio). Toni Valliere was previously doing the "breaking news desk" anchor job, at least for a while.
  13. Part of me thinks this is still sort of temporary, although temporary may last for a while. By that, I mean that I wonder how long Kathy has before she starts thinking about retirement herself. I could see Joyce becoming Kathy's replacement as the female anchor with the most seniority; and they'd then pair her with a male anchor (Patrick, possibly, or someone from outside the station). Edit: Joyce was previously anchoring 5:00, fill-in at 6 and 10, as well as doing special projects.
  14. I don't think so. I think they're going to do an external search, looking for someone with a little more seniority.
  15. From what I recall, they do an abbreviated broadcast if time permits (even if they only have the time to do a story or two). If not, they scrub for east/central and go straight to local news. (I believe they still would offer a west coast World News in that instance.)
  16. I think that Cecilia subbed for David earlier in the week, so she probably took her normal shift off.
  17. They're real! I swear! I talked to someone who worked there once... but when I turned away for a second, he disappeared as if he were never there... it was the weirdest thing... I'll find them again someday...
  18. I think she does as well, but I don't think The View is the best fit for her. Since her days on Today, Katie appears to want to be a Serious Journalist , along the lines of a Diane Sawyer, and I don't think that The View furthers those goals, and the same applies for someone like Diane who has already made their name as a Serious Journalist . I think that Katie would admit that her talk show was a bit of a misstep; I think she thought it'd be something different than what it was. What they need is a breakfast newser, someone who can equally do entertainment/pop culture and more serious news, and someone whose career won't be negatively impacted by expressing a (occasionally unpopular) opinion on the news and events of the day.
  19. Although it is produced by an ABC affiliate and airs predominantly on ABC stations, it is not an ABC network program. It is syndicated by Disney-ABC Domestic Television.
  20. I like that open, but I prefer the Charles Gibson-era set. Beautiful colors worked into the set, and it provided so many good camera angles other than just the anchor in front of the big screen.
  21. Preempted by college football, as noted above.
  22. If they go back to World News Tonight... will they also bring back the classic World News Tonight music? I hope so... the current music is just so blah.
  23. If you sort of squint... it still wouldn't look anything like the Fox Tribune graphics.
  24. Interesting tonight on WISN. Matt Serwe flew over from fellow Hearst station KETV to do fill-in on weather. It's the first time I've seen them pull talent from other Hearst stations for fill-in help for the studio. Chief Meteorologist Mark Baden is on vacation this week, and Chris Gloninger (normally weekend evenings) filled in for him during the week. Normally one of the remaining morning meteorologists (Sally Severson [weekdays] and Jeremy Nelson [weekends]) would pull the weekend evening coverage shift, but apparently neither were available or willing.
  25. Yeah, that is indeed part of the standard Hearst graphics package. WISN uses that as well.
