  1. I think the problem a lot of viewers are having with Mike Marza, including myself is that he tries too hard to be funny and relevant and the 'trying' is more apparent than the relevance or the context of whatever he's saying. It feels like the chemistry is "forced" and it comes across as inauthentic and fake. He is an awesome reporter and anchor, but maybe not the right choice for a lighthearted morning broadcast. I think they need a more "bubbly" chemistry and personality for their weekend morning shows. Or maybe they oughta change the format a bit, maybe remove some of the hard news in the 9AM hour? Or, calibrate the stories with more words of empathy.

  2. Wow, thats awful. I hope he gets better soon! I remember that was the very newscast that groomed me into my interest into WABC and the news in general. Especially after school during my childhood. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

If it was non-amicable, it would've been immediately, not April 10.

Also, Michelle has already acknowledged it, so I doubt it.

While I have problems with Disney as a company, I don't think your conspiracy theory holds water. The only mistake lately was Camille Edwards and the damage she did.

Yeah... I agree. I don't think this is any different than it's ever been at WABC. I really feel like his departure is voluntary.

  4. Yeah, well Rob was a good class act anchor. Sad that he didn't spend as much time there as some of the other seasoned veterans but i'm sure he can always return in the future if there is a fit for him. WABC has gone to hire reporters and anchors whom left only to return again. I do not think he was forced out. Again we don't know the full story but to me someone that is forced out wouldn't write such a beautifully written monologue such as that on Instagram. I feel like he left voluntarily. Aside from WABC Rob has been in the business for a while so maybe he feels like a change in career is good for him. I could also see Rob doing a talk show he just has that kind of personality for that. Wouldn't be suprised if we stumbled on him again on some sort of talk or radio show. Good luck to Rob and his wife!

  5. They used to do a 7pm newscast that initially aired on WNBC, but then subsequently moved to their digital subchannel in the late 2000s and early 2010s with Chuck Scarborough. I think it was called New York Nightly News? If my memory serves me correctly..

David works noon and 4. Getting 4 was part of getting David back from CHI. Bill and Liz at 6 have been the norm for quite a while since Liz left the 11 for 4. As for why Bill at 5, he chose to take over for Diana is my guess.

As for Ken, he and Lori were both taken off the 12-1 shift to relieve the load of work. Bill (and now Sam) still work both, but there was a place needed for Shirleen, and Ken and  Lori at the time got a break working from 4:30-7. Lori's leaving put Shirleen at mornings as well. Of course, Ken has a ton of seniority.

I wonder if Shirleen will eventually also step down from the Noon Broadcast. Seems like its a lot for her to do. Especially now that she's a mother of two..

Jesus, the kvetching about that graphic package doesn't stop. I get it. It's not the best graphic package, but the old ones were going for multiple years at this point and it was time for change. Yes, it will get changed eventually. It's the not worst thing I've seen. It's readable.

It's light years better than KABC's.

Honestly it is just this particular package that we keep griping about haha because it is a downgrade in my opinion from what they've previously used. The Giant Octopus package from late Summer 2011 to Spring 2016 was arguably their best they've ever had:

In my opinion those graphics above were their best on air look.

Honestly I prefer the KABC graphics over the WABC. Much cleaner and more effective in my opinion.

Their previous package looks similar to WLS's current package. I wonder if GO did the same thing.

Maybe when they move to their new location we'll see an overhaul in their on-air look and branding.

it was, indeed, a bad era. There was a live on air fight between Steve and Bill Evans. There was the day he was passed out at his desk and missed a live broadcast. He was notorious in Chelsea, the NY gayborhood where he lived. I think there was a combination of shell shocked faces and celebrations when he was finally fired. A real shame.

This is the “argument” that Larry had mentioned. He did not pronounce the name “Melania Knaus” (Melania Trump now) correctly and Bill wanted him to say it again and Steve asked why don’t you read it and the argument ensues with Lori in the middle of it. All three of them are no longer with WABC. Steve is out of the news business altogether, Lori is on Good Day New York on Fox 5 and Bill is on the radio out east on Long Island.

  9. Wow what a moving video, an incredible send off that I quite frankly never seen any station do. WABC did it right. This send off made me tear up a bit. I try not to cry when I see these things, but I honestly did because it was so moving to see how much she was so caring to others and how connected her colleagues, and viewers are with her. I will always remember her. Seeing all of these kind words from her colleagues, friends and family is a testament and a reflection of how she shared her heart and grace with those she touched. Wow, what incredible human. It is not too often we come across incredible people like her, and I am so proud that I have been able to watch her for all of these years. She will be missed and I love you Diana Williams and keep sharing your heart and spreading your kindness forever.

  10. Well the time has come and we are nearing the end of our friend, the great Diana Williams' tenure at WABC. Tomorrow is her final day as an anchor at WABC. I wonder what special coverage they will have for her to honor her. And what a true class act she was. Diana delivered the news to us with such poise and grace . Really her motherly qualities and her innate kindness cultivated in her delivery of the news and she did not let her troubles and problems get to her when she was tested emotionallywith her husband and her son's health struggles.

It will be fitting to see her final moments on WABC anchor with Bill as they were the model team in the late 90s and early 2000s in the wake of Bill Beutel. They followed some big shoes to fill and they did it with such grace. When I think of WABC I always think of Diana Williams and Bill Ritter especially after 9/11 when I was in the 8th grade watching that broadcast, and one can't forget how she covered Hurricane Sandy in Road Cam 7. I think that was one of the highlights of her career because when I watched her report she had an effect of making me feel calm like everything is going to be okay. What an incredible woman she is and the reason why her family is doing so well is because they are survived by her grace. I will miss her dearly.

The current EWN music is officially 20 years old and still sounds as good as new!

Here is what WABC-TV looked like back in late August / early September of 1999 when it switched over to the current cuts of Gari’s “Eyewitness News” and, briefly, became “ABC7 Eyewitness News”.

5pm News short open, talent open, bumper:

“Coming Up” promo (from a few months later in May 2000):

I have a feeling they will continue to use this music until they switch to the new building. The music is good, just wish they could use more of their package.

I’ve always preferred the “ABC 7” branding better than the “Channel 7” but I doubt that ever change lol. I think they should rebrand themselves as ABC 7 for consistency especially since their website is called “ABC 7 NY”. I feel like saying “Channel Seven” in 2020 is like so dated. They switched back to the “Channel 7” branding in 2004. I remember we had a big discussion on that back then on this site haha.

I remembered one of the arguments was that the word “Chan-nel” was easier to say than “A-B-C”. Flows better, less syllables.

Another argument was the audience, older folks especially the baby boomers and native New Yorkers whom watch the broadcast call it “Channel 7”.

     Where in conversation they would say;

“Yo, did you see that story on Channel Seven? That was Crazy!” Lol. With that New Yawk accent haha.

Out of curiosity, I’ve always wondered, does anyone know if they include Sam Champion for the Friday talent Morning and Noon opens since Sam does not work on Fridays?
