It’s September 1st and my tv provider which is HuluTV, still offers the now independent station WKBD, instead of the new CW affiliate, WADL.  Not sure if it’s because the switch just happened, but if WADL still isn’t offered on HuluTV when the provider is supposed to offer the CW affiliate in addition to the Fox, CBS, ABC, and NBC affiliate, then I’m going to know that WADL’s bad signal just might be the issue.  Hopefully that’s solved veer soon.

I think part of the problem is that Nexstar...err...Mission hasn't fully acquired the station yet and I highly doubt Adell is working with Hulu and YTTV to get their channel on those two platforms as they have one foot out the door already.

I somewhat surprised (and annoyed) that KDKA got the revamp before KYW. KYW seems to be teetering on the edge of relaunching but, for whatever reason, hasn't yet.

I have a feeling they will switch very soon. KDKA was tinkering with the studio backdrop to match the new graphics yesterday before they implemented the new graphics today.

It's possible KYW has some bugs they need to work out first before they implement the new graphics.

I'll also add this, since it was brought up.  How much of a big deal is the Wendy Bell fiasco in 2023?  It's been 2 and a half years since she was taken off the air at KDKA Radio.  I don't follow her, I don't know if she's still on broadcast radio/TV or just on the internet.  She's never going to be back on KDKA anything, ever.  I would think by now many people have largely forgotten about her time on KD.  I could be wrong, though, as I don't actively follow her.

This is an aside, of course.  Back to the main topic.

I don't think its as big of a deal now. You don't hear much about KDKA radio these days (the controversies died down the moment they canned Wendy), so the brand isn't as "toxic" as it was a few years back. Not to mention the KDKA-TV branding is a lot stronger than the radio branding these days so they were able to overcome any controversy from the radio side.

I don't even know where Wendy is these days. She keeps bouncing around different radio stations in Pittsburgh that have a much weaker signal compared to AM 1020. She's basically an obscure nobody these days.

Just because Action News is the Delaware Valley’s Leading News Program (Disney has to pay Apollo-Cox for the “Action” name) or Eyewitness News is “News York’s #1 News” (and Disney has to pay Paramount Global for the EWN name) doesn’t mean those names are ironclad.

I dunno. WPVI tried to replace MCTYW with a modernized version of it and we saw how that turned out.

Both WPVI and WABC are number 1 in their markets respectively. They have less of an incentive to rebrand like the struggling CBS O&Os do.

The new look for KD is coming sooner than we think.  Check out this tweet:

They've getting a new newsroom. I have a feeling whenever they publicly reveal the new newsroom is when the rebranding will take place.

"Hey Hearst. Sell your flagship to get WFTV." Are you insane?!

Yes, but in this little hypothetical where Kenneth doesn't understand how the industry works, Graham gets two big 4 stations and the FCC is run by Clippy.

    Clippy | Know Your Meme

Not to mention that Hearst's graphics hub is based out of WESH so that station is going nowhere.

Between him and Gary Amble retiring at KCTV. One has to wonder when Brian Busby at KMBC will do the same.

Rupert Murdoch's new TV project in the UK, TalkTV, has launched just under an hour ago. The new channel, operated by their radio subsidiary Wireless Group (but owned directly by News UK), is the new home to Piers Morgan's show (which will be also broadcast on Sky News Australia and Fox Nation), but it is being mostly built on the basis of Murdoch's opinionated DAB station TalkRadio, which going forward will be a radio simulcast of the newly-launched channel, and most of its programming taking on a filmed radio styling. The three new TV-focused shows, involving Morgan, former The Talk panelist Sharon Osbourne (with exactly the same name for the new show) and The Times political editor Tom Newton-Dunn, have bespoke graphics designed by Jump Design (with lots of cues to Fox News, indeed), music from Sitting Duck and set designs from Jack Morton and MOOV. These same premises worked with ITV Daytime/Good Morning Britain previously, and their executive director, Erron Gordon (who also championed Morgan as GMB co-presenter) has made the presentation much more professional than that of rival GB News.

If anybody's interested (for presentation purposes), the channel is live on YouTube and surprisingly, not geoblocked (however, in the US and Canada is not available thanks to Piers being on Fox Nation, also in AU and NZ, but it is in the rest of the world). Each hour is being individually posted both live and on-demand, as it was the case with talkRadio beforehand.

Looks like they're using the Fox News package for their lower thirds.

WLUC is by far the dominant station in the UP. But I don't think Nexstar is done with WJMN. As I said on the Speculatron, I think it would be wise for Nexstar to try and pluck ABC away from WBUP (and something that I think could reasonably happen, given the difference between their owners). As dominant as WLUC is, I would think WJMN is faring better in the ratings than WBUP is, and probably will do better than WZMQ.

Nexstar's ABC affiliates are up for renewal at the end of the year so don't be too surprised if they do try to grab the ABC affiliation from WBUP.

Nexstar invested a lot into getting that news operation going so i don't think they'll be that eager to shut everything down unless they really have to.

If Nexstar botched this as badly as they apparently did - and this was a royal botching just handing the CBS affiliation straight up to Lilly, let alone having all their CBS affiliates on a day-to-day basis - I'm not sure I would have them as a favorite to get the CW.

Did Nexstar use the same negotiators that LIN TV used when they botched the affiliation deal with WISH-TV?

Wonder if Circle City tried to make an offer to bring CBS back to WISH-TV as well?

Ahem... Spectrum News 13 says hello.

Whoops my mistake! In that case, Charlotte actually has six news operations since Spectrum News is in Charlotte too.

I'm well aware of all of this. WJZY hasn't been that situation in ratings since 2016. The move was not because of the previous years. It's because they wanted back into Milwaukee and finally into Seattle.  I've said that Fox will come back as they see someone else building up WJZY then reap the benefits of that investment.

Charlotte can support 5 news operations. That's not WJZY's problem. Similar sized and smaller markets such as Orlando have 5 news operations.  If they stick to something with branding and with proper investment then it will be fine.

Orlando only has 4 English language news operations (WESH/WKCF, WKMG, WFTV/WRDQ, WOFL/WRBW).

Charlotte is a unique market and its because of WCCB.

Tornado warning in the Seattle viewing area. I wasn’t watching at the time, but KCPQ later took over locally. (h/t @Mrtraveler01)

At first KCPQ was asleep at the wheel while the other stations in town were covering it. Then after a while, KCPQ started simulcasting Fox Weather while they were covering the tornado warnings. They eventually did go to local coverage only after the tornado warnings dropped.

Either way, KCPQ looked ill prepared today.

And Sportsnet's new graphics are official

The old Sportsnet graphics were dated out of the gate, especially when that was when all the U.S. networks were starting to go flat. These are a major improvement, though the team section is bugging me a little bit (the width, lack of team logos, and not doing the soccer-style layout anymore)

Meanwhile in Montreal, TVA Sports is still using the old Sportsnet graphics, but they appear to have retextured them to be flat. I'm not sure if I like this.

Yesterday Nexstar and SportsGrid announced a partnership to create "SportsGrid Network". SportsGrid mainly covers sports betting. It'll launch on September 1st in 9 markets.

I'm not up to speed on my sport gambling laws, but I take it that these are markets in states where sports gambling is legal?
