I don’t hate it, don’t hate it all. I actually quite liked that. It’s similar to WNT with the flare of CBS Mornings’ Eye Opener. Doubt it moves the needle at all but I do like it.

And the music continues to be one of the few bright spots about CBSEN.

In theory I don't hate the idea of an evening version of the Eye Opener, but in execution this was chaotic and cheap looking, IMO. The 2018 version shared above felt better executed than this.

After seven months of construction, KXAN has unveiled their new studio.

There are a lot of textures happening on this set in general, but this wide shot.. my eyes don't know where to look. I think the plexiglass panels on the desk flanks (which create six vertical lines on either side) are what tips this into too-busy territory.

Also seems like they need to re-level their camera. Horizontal lines at the top make it very apparent that the shot is lopsided.

  3. WKRN has been "News 2" or "Nashville's News 2" for decades. WSMV went to "News 4 Nashville" when they were in 3rd place and trying to dig out after firing their star anchor and decided "Channel 4 News" didn't work anymore. What never made sense is why they didn't go to "WSMV-something" immediately. Those are legacy call letters in the market. WSMV 4 News, IMO, is the brand they should have always gone with because it resonates with the audience - old and new.

  4. Branding issues aside, from every clip I've seen so far, what would make KCBS/KCAL unwatchable if I lived in Southern California is every single anchor sounds like they're cold-reading their scripts. It comes off as disjointed, cold, and robotic. When KTLA is a few clicks away, the choice would be obvious for me.

Well, with the name and launch date for the KCAL morning show finally out of the bag, it’s looking like KCBS/KCAL could be the first to launch the new O&O graphics and rebrand December 5th.

What is this absolute nightmare of a brand? Where are your eyes supposed to look? How much of this mouthful is going to be used on air? "You're watching CBS News Los Angeles This Morning on KCAL." "KCAL CBS News Los Angeles This Morning starts now." WUT.

  6. Knowing Scripps they probably did audience research to see which name had more brand recognition.

Scripps is a recognizable name due to its legacy media, cable channels, healthcare (in Southern California even if it is unrelated to the modern media company - founder Ellen Browning Scripps's brother is Edward Willis Scripps "EW Scripps,) and the spelling bee, whereas Newsy is very niche.

  7. From a news consumer perspective this is new paint slapped on the same old thing. The debut newscasts lead with live reports from ANF crews in South Carolina and Florida. If you go with a name like "Atlanta News First" I expect local news to be up front - or at least the local perspective. Why send local resources when you have CBS and presumably CNN crews to provide national coverage?

If you're going to climb out of last place you can't expect fresh branding on the same product to accomplish anything.

What strikes me the most about all of this is how traditional it all looks. Solid royal blue everywhere, restrained design elements, and an orchestral theme that's refreshed but still light on contemporary touches. The newscast itself is pretty sober with an offering of all the meat and potatoes news of the day.

This show feels more in line with what it was like during the later Rather or early Pelley eras. Funny how every time CBS tries to shake up the Evening News, they always eventually go back to a pretty traditional presentation and newscast format. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

The only time in the last decade+ ratings went up.

I have a bone to pick about ABC World News Tonight:

WHY IS THE BACK HALF SO COMMERCIAL HEAVY?????????

There have been several instances where I tune in at 6:47 PM (Eastern), to find the program at a commercial.  Sometimes I'll have to wait up to 3 minutes before the news is back.  At that point there'll be a short story, then David will say "when we come back..."

This is followed by another 3 minutes of commercials.  Then 1 minute later ... "WHEN WE COME BACK!"  AGAIN!!!!!!

I understand that commercials "pay the bills" but why do you have to go BACK to commercial 1 minute after airing 3 minutes of commercials!  I swear from 6:47 to 7:00 I watched 10 minutes of commercials to 3 minutes of actual news.  Is this time of the evening a "cold" time for TV viewing (or a "hot" time for advertising)?

Ratings are measured on the quarter hour (:00, :15, :30, :45). If there is a super block of news from :00-:15, they don't really care how many people stick around for the remaining 15 min. They just need butts in seats and eyeballs glued at those critical times. It's also why news starts a minute or so before the top and bottom of the hour, to make sure you are firmly in content and your audience is locked when the meter clicks.

KTUU is THE brand for broadcast news in AK, like 80+% of the market. Whatever happens with CBS5/KYES, I would not count on any branding change online or on air for KTUU.

I stand corrected. The umbrella news brand will be "Alaska's News Source" - KTUU's longtime slogan. KTVA's old desk (which never had a logo) has now appeared on KTUU's set replacing the KTUU-branded desk.

Unique slogan replaced with a boring one. Also why "safe"? Safe from what?

The promo campaign when this debuted normally included VO saying "Keeping you: Safe. Informed. Connected."

It's a severe weather market, and the longtime weather slogan is "Your safest place in a storm."

New slogans, especially for legacy stations, come after lots of market research. One of the primary questions asked is normally "what do you expect from your local news?" I would assume this was born out of the majority of answers being some form of "keeping my family safe, staying informed and connected to my community."

Stations are more concerned about what their audience wants and expects than hanging onto a zippy slogan that a forum thinks is "unique."

EDIT: The VO in the new open is also "Keeping you: Safe. Informed. Connected."

Any reason WGBA doesn't have them yet?

Just a reminder that we're in the midst of a pandemic and every work stream possible has been upended. Launching a new gfx package would be an unneeded distraction, especially for the small market stations.

That may not have been an option for WTVF to consider, especially with their studios being in close proximity to the Tennessee State Capitol and adjacent government buildings. Plus, the station itself is landlocked, and acquiring land to accommodate a helipad would've likely come at a premium for them as opposed to using John C Tune.

The station is right downtown. There is no room for a helipad. Tune airport was the best option.

Using the morning cut for the evenings.

Honestly I don't hate this package. The music is pretty good. The graphics are SUPER basic, but less flash hopefully means more emphasis on the actual content. My consumption of TV news has fallen drastically over the last couple of years because the substance just isn't there.

  16. Just purely speculation from my part, but it seems like The NOW will be misplaced in San Diego. I just saw a promo for Dateline yesterday, which will be airing at 3PM. On their website, their inactive RightThisMinute page has a header saying the show airs at 4PM: http://www.10news.com/entertainment/right-this-minute

    Wonder what's happening at KGTV.

Appears to be a mistake or old page. TV listings two weeks out show it still at 4. (http://www.10news.com/entertainment/tv-listings) And Dateline? On ABC? At 3pm? No....

  17. I hate to throw back to a post from two weeks ago, but I don't hang around these parts like I used to...

WTVF is the dominant number 1 in the Nashville market. It has won all time slots for more than a year now, and when it didn't completely sweep previously, it was losing by a fraction of a point in one newscast.

Upon joining Scripps it jumps in as the #2 station for revenue in the company. Behind only WXYZ. We ain't all 3rd or 4th place stations...

    #wigsnatch

Let's be honest. I really don't think that adding the Journal stations in the mix will help profits at all- not with all the expenses they will be taking on. These are not #1 stations, they are are as NS8401 pointed out, 3rd or 4th place stations. Plus they will need some resources poured into them, just like the former McGraw-Hill stations. And just look at how that turned out... as soon as they don't produce to their liking after they have invested in them, they then start cutting back. Scripps needs to stick to a sound plan and give it time, and not sidetrack itself with these gimmicky stunts/programs/ideas/products that they come up with or invest in. Frankly, I'm surprised that Brian Lawlor still has a job with the company seeing as that many of the stations he oversees are at the bottom of barrel.

  18. I think we have a winner... I'm not sure whether it's the Casio theme music, the "A-ha"-esque sketches or the sportscaster giving a thumbs up, but this is definitely one of the strangest news opens I've ever seen.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ4cf3aDZrQ

I'm strangely alright with it. Yes it is cheesy, but it's very 90's and (those of you who are old enough to remember the early 90's) will recall that the 90's were very cheesy in general.
