  1. There was a point in time in 2018 or 2019 that I thought to myself and realized....there's hardly any scripted TV shows on television that people want to see, mainly because, as someone alluded to earlier, these companies put their money where their mouths are, and that's with the streaming services. I mean...is it safe to say all these big 4 networks have outside of reality, news, and sports are their legacy shows? NBC with their Law & Order trifecta...ABC and Grey's Anatomy...CBS continuing on with NCIS after all this time....Fox with two Sunday night animated comedies in Family Guy and The Simpsons, I guess? One thing's for sure, nobody I know is flocking to the TV for the newest ABC drama or CBS' next big comedy led by a well-known actor. This leads me into my next point. Appointment television. I miss the hell out of it, or at least what comes with it. When I used to watch Chuck on NBC, I had quite a number of days where I'd hop on Twitter and follow along with everyone watching the show at the same time. I did this with a few other shows and a quite often once I found subreddits in Reddit for my favorite shows. That level of camaraderie is something you can't replicate with a Netflix or Disney+ show that rolls out new episodes at 3am on a Wednesday or Friday. While this isn't going to take away from whether or not people enjoy a series, appointment TV is something that'll rarely be seen, or at least not in the droves that it would lead to if you had to tune into a show at 8 or try and watch a DVR recording a week before the next episode.

  4. WCBS, WBBM, and KYW should be next. KDKA is going to be in April or May. There is heavy speculation that KDKA and KYW will indeed, rebrand their newscasts as CBS News Pittsburgh/Philadelphia.

  5. They can stream all they want, but they're never going to get me. And to be honest, I don't really miss anything they're not offering anymore enough to pay. Pretty stupid and shortsighted to give up the biggest platform they have. If anything, they should augment it with social media, sending texts, reminding people to go into their TV set to watch a show. I use the free streaming plenty, so I'm not just some old guy who refuses to try something new. I just think the free OTA platform is easiest and most convenient for people. I pay for the local newspaper and the Wall Street Journal. Anything else I have to pay for, I can live without.

  6. I'm also thinking that maybe the Black & Gold is only going to be seen on the flash cam monitor graphics. Because aside from the past few years with the Black & Gold variant of the 2016 graphics, KDKA has followed the CBS O&O graphics mandates very closely.

  7. They've getting a new newsroom. I have a feeling whenever they publicly reveal the new newsroom is when the rebranding will take place.

  8. So Nexstar is retiring the set in a corner design for this mini KTLA/WPIX window backdrop with another monitor in front? I’ll take it…

  9. Ol’ Scotty got it wrong on multiple fronts. Here’s the thing: it’s not about LIV at all. CBS has no reason to keep those stations affiliated with the CW, a network that they jettisoned their joint operating stake in and have already washed their hands of. But LIV gives them a readymade excuse as CBS is not going to want to be seen as being in bed with the Saudis (as @channel2noted to me, yes, Paramount has a joint venture with Qatar managing the remains of Miramax, but it’s all about the PR here, and Uncle Perry made a boo-boo). CBS launching an all-news streaming service on WWJ meant that they were always going to wind up doing the same in Atlanta and Seattle and make them in-house CBS O&Os (and possibly in Tampa had the Standard General takeover of TEGNA actually went through; thankfully that deal is dead and the station is expendable). Plus CBS already dumped MyNet on WBFS and WSBK and have the Now hybrid local-national franchises in primetime on their secondary stations. And the insane thing is, Nexstar is only thinking about how to turn a profit on an operation CBS and Warners lost a shocking amount of money on. They don’t care if it completely nukes the affiliate base, a parcel of land basically paid for the CW in the first place.

  10. KTLA goes an hour further, 4am-2pm. Also, I live in South Florida. That "1am newscast" is actually a repeat of their 11pm news, just like how WFOR and WTVJ repeat their 11pm newscasts just after 1:35am, while WSVN has their 11pm news repeat at 12:30 and 4:30am.

  11. I hope CBS gives KYW some permission to keep “Eyewitness News” as a secondary brand, hopefully reporters still say it at the end of live shots.

  15. Newsroom looks nice, but is it never going to be seen on camera? The flash cam position looks to be in front of a monitor. What's the point of going live to the newsroom if it's just another reporter in front of a monitor?

  17. To your point, those plexiglass panels on either side of the desk are the debate podiums they used earlier. Also these red lines support the camera leaning to the Left:

  18. I never really understood why the black and gold color combo generated such passion on either side of the debate, but then again, I’m the most pedantic person I know, so who am I to judge? I wasn’t a huge fan of how it looked on the outgoing package, but I could see that color combo working well with the new graphics. Just as long as they don’t do something stupid, like gold text on a black background (or vice versa). Also, the new newsroom looks fantastic.

  20. As you may well know, Kasie Hunt was originally hired to primarily host her own political show on CNN+, which was essentially gone in the blink of an eye, as a result of the days-old length of the streaming network's existence. Following the demise of CNN+, CNN terminated a sizable number of the streaming network's employees. But due to Hunt's popularity and stature, I assume those were part of the decision-making from the powers that be to keep her at CNN. Now, she is left mainly offering political analysis; though I observed on a few occasions that she was seemingly auditioning for "CNN Tonight," before both Laura Coates and Alisyn Camerota were eventually named permanent anchors of the program. In any case, although the new CNN CEO, Chris Licht, has reduced the number of on-air political commentators at the network in recent weeks, it still certainly does feel weighty with political opinion. Besides ratings and entertainment (for some), there is no real redeeming value to feature panels with having both sides of the political spectrum arguing with one another, which fortunately they don't feature as often as was formerly the case under former head Jeff Zucker.

  21. The studio pipe grid is noted in the plans as having a height of 13' 2" (The portion of the building the studio is in is physically incapable of having a grid height higher than this), and remained in place during the demolition and rebuild. That seems about right for pictures from the early 2000's set. The last set did seem a little shorter, so perhaps the lighting was brought lower by way of stirrups, but it's hard to tell. The scale on the plans also show the studio pre-renovation as having dimensions roughly 65' by 46', which would be roughly 80' by 49' after the remodel, with the removal of the technical and mechanical rooms. There was also what appears to be a noise trap along an exterior wall (The same wall that features windows in the newsroom) that was removed. The early 2000's set had a "soft news" morning show portion not visible in the above screenshot, but if you look closely, it appears you can see part of the floor pattern for this area under the center and right camera. The camera taking that spy cam shot was probably mounted near the top of the set wall, either on the set itself or from the grid. I wouldn't be surprised if the news desk platform slid backwards to give the cameras more space to move when shooting the opposite direction. The set being "large" was 100% an optical illusion, like most news sets. The second floor newsroom wasn't touched much through it's life. After they moved news into the studio, the former studio portion of the newsroom was tiled over until the iPad Graphics debut. The real mystery is what they originally planned to do with the space once the 10th floor Newsroom opened a few years ago. It's possible the general concept of renovating the space was a long time in the making, and started under Tribune.

  22. The fact that we can only have a hearing about Newsmax leaving DIRECTV, but not do one for all the local stations and cable channels that can be dropped as well, and stop it from happening, shows how full political bias can be as well as supporting favoritism. https://thehill.com/homenews/media/3841353-mccarthy-wont-rule-out-hearings-on-directv-dropping-newsmax/

  24. This doesn’t surprise me. Last negotiation, Fox Television Stations reportedly made a larger cash offer but Sony and CMV went with the ABC O&Os because they found that the likely ratings drops that would come with a station change would not be worth the money.

  26. There are a lot of textures happening on this set in general, but this wide shot.. my eyes don't know where to look. I think the plexiglass panels on the desk flanks (which create six vertical lines on either side) are what tips this into too-busy territory. Also seems like they need to re-level their camera. Horizontal lines at the top make it very apparent that the shot is lopsided.

  27. I was streaming WOIO tonight and noticed they were using their "19 news now" and Telemundo sets for the 3pm-6pm newscasts. Weather was still being anchored from main set. Anybody have any insight or notice how long they've been doing this for?

  28. NextTV posted an article yesterday about the issues in the current syndication market. Apparently, ABC really, really fought to keep Wheel and Jeopardy on its stations because Disney sees them as important, which makes perfect sense; after all, not only are they two of the most popular shows in syndication today, but ABC also runs prime time versions of both.

  29. As for Nick Kosir, yeah, they've moved him entirely into the "fun segments" type of role, both in studio and out in the field. They've given his segments titles like "Kosir's Korner", "Nick's Clicks", and "In the Nick of Time". His segments have ranged from field reports on skiing and surfing, to man-on-the-street interviews, to game show host, and today, reporting live for Groundhog Day with Staten Island Chuck. To date, since the January 9th schedule change, they have not used him as a fill-in OCM, either. They've used him exclusively for "fun" segments.

  30. Having recently done extensive research into the histories of a number of the biggest post-New World station builds, they mostly were staggered over a period of months. KSHB had an existing 9pm news which moved to 10 at the time of switch. A 5 was added in October 1994, a 6 in March 1995, but mornings had to wait until the summer of 1996. WDJT added two newscasts at the same time in its March 1996 news debut and then a third shortly thereafter. Weekend news was added the next year. Took them until 2001 to compete in mornings. KNXV started news at 10 on August 1, 1994. They added a 6 in about October, 5 in December, and mornings and middays in January 1995 when the remainder of the ABC programming moved over. WFTS aired its first news on December 12, 1994, but only at 6 and 11. The remaining newscasts showed up in the first four months of 1995. WGNX was not like many of the others. They were not producing a full line of newscasts until the new millennium: just noon, 6, and 11. It was not until Meredith took over that they added morning and 5 p.m. newscasts. WPTY went in all at once in evenings. When they debuted, they had 5, 6, 9 (WLMT) and 10. It took them at LEAST a decade to start a morning newscast! WWJ started with 6 and 11 (not including streaming hours) and has added a newscast in each of the two following weeks. Mornings do seem like they will take a little longer, and I'd expect that because of the time slot. Evening news additions tend to be more incremental, while mornings require a whole other team of on- and off-camera personnel.

  31. On top of all of this, cable companies have the nerve to charge into the hundreds for basic cable --while providing poor and slow customer service -- yet act puzzled as to why cord cutting is the new norm. Loved South Park's take on this:

  32. I'm a big fan of his work! He did an excellent job with KIRO . I think the current issue with the Gray GFX is it feels way to flat. I know flat and clean is/was in..but some depth would help. If I had to take a guess of when WCSC will launch, I'm gonna guess right after the Super Bowl (even though they are a CBS Affiliate )

  35. I'm an armchair, backseat-driving commenter as well. The loud, splashy, and tabloid-like "Action News" was the creation of GM Steven Gigliotti and ND John Lippman, who came aboard in late 1991. Among other changes, they dumped Jim Lampley for the more in-your-face Michael Tuck. KCBS won the February 1992 11 p.m. sweep primarily because of the Olympics, but it was all downhill after that, and the management team was canned. Bill Applegate actually restored a little order in 1994-95. While he retained the "Action News" branding he toned the newscasts down quite a bit. He hired Linda Alvarez for mornings; his throwing the CBS checkbook at Ann Martin led Bree Walker out the door, and then went for nostalgia. He outbid Disney and KCAL to get Jerry Dunphy, "Big News" stalwart Bob Navarro, Larry Carroll, and Dr. George Fischbeck!. Not that any of this helped the ratings -- it didn't. In fact things were so dismal that the early-morning news was axed until long after Applegate was shown the door.

  36. Yeah, it makes sense to replace "KCAL News Los Angeles" with the "CBS News Los Angeles" bug over the local "KCAL News Los Angeles" bug, which is still seen on channel 9, so the streams are more identifying and consistent to CBS Los Angeles audiences online.

  37. Gosh the Eyewitness News tag, Its dying only a handful carries them mostly ABC. I could probably count on my finger who still have it. KGO should pick it up, All non-action news ABC O&Os should have the title since they own it.

  38. Another oddity with WPXI: They swapped Wheel and Jeopardy! back in July, but starting in September, Jeopardy! moved back to 7:00 on Saturdays only, and the Saturday run of Wheel got relegated to 4:30 AM Saturday morning. At first, this was done to accommodate local program "The Jerome Bettis Show" and NBC's package of Notre Dame Football games which start at 7:30. Now that NFL season's come and gone, Jeopardy! is still airing at 7:00 on Saturdays and 7:30 is now random specials or infomercials, with Wheel still airing at 4:30 AM.

  40. Wow, sounds like they want to reinvent the wheel. Here are some crazy ideas I can think of: - Doing away with the on-screen scoreboard and instead displaying it virtually on the field, a la the down and distance marker. - Displaying the away team's score on the far left side of the screen and displaying the home team's score on the far right side of the screen, instead of having it all in one continuous graphic. - Tons of sound effects, a la early-mid 2000s graphics.

  41. Same for WSOC in Charlotte. Their 4pm Dr. Phil airing will no longer be needed with WAXN airing what is now the previous day’s episode at 10am. That can become the “main” episode.

  44. CBS News Detroit is basically a streaming operation that happens to have a transmitter tower to simulcast off of, and the stated goal is to be live from 4:30am to 11:35pm every day. Given the current buildout, they’ll already have a 3pm news running streaming-only for a few months until Phil’s show ends, at which point 62 can start simulcasting (and the reruns for next season are shunted off to WKBD?) Currently they have a 7pm streaming-only and that could be added to 62 in the coming weeks.

  45. I’m curious to see if WWJ will be the first Detroit station to air a 3pm newscast. They are already debuting the 4pm newscast next Monday. I believe the strategy is to air more news than syndicated shows on WWJ-TV. With Drew Barrymore moving to 9 am next week, I can’t see WWJ putting Drew Barrymore at 3 pm.
