  1. There are many directions the network could go with the GMA3 slot, with merely an official host change naturally being the most likely. Let's keep the speculation to a minimum. An uncited rumor about an 80-year-old comedian moving to that hour is not necessary to post. Legitimate publications only, please.

  2. And it seems we've found out the move isn't related to tax breaks or a change of environment; Kelly has a persistent LA stalker and just wants to get herself and her children the hell away from them.

  3. Set has debuted and for the space and market that it’s in, it’s a beauty. No new graphics — only some changes to the cuts of their existing music package and updated opens/re-opens.

  6. Apples and oranges. Sinclair could not legally keep either the 33 or 40 of “ABC 33/40” and if they filed such a request to claim VC 33 or 40 in the present day, it would be rejected. And AGAIN, people have no trouble finding James Spann when there’s a tornado and he rolls up his sleeves.

  7. I sometimes forget that Rachael is still on the air, and have seen almost no promo or buzz surrounding her show lately. She's lasted really long though. I remember her taking over Tony Danza's old talk show slot in my market. I'm actually surpised by this. Drew seems nice enough but she really oversells her exuberance and cheeryness. Her set is beautiful though and NYC local stations ---even Today or GMA-- should take notes. Especially her "Drew's News" set. Its the best set of any talk show on the air right now next to Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson. Craig needs to return to the Late Late Show since Corden is leaving.

  8. Not sure where to post this...Why exactly are CBS O&Os less successful than than Fox, ABC and NBC stations? Does the 1994 realignment where CBS lost NFL rights --and subsequently affiliates--to Fox tie into this? I've also heard Westinghouse ownership cited as a reasoning. It's an interesting contrast as CBS has been king of daytime and primetime for several years now.

  9. Good news, in my opinion. Weekend mornings on CBS 2 have been boring with a solo anchor, so it’s good to see a coanchor being added. Interesting to note that Doug Williams is the son of Brian, who anchored and reported at WCBS in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s prior to moving to NBC News.

  10. For the non-CBS ads, do they charge the same ad rates as if those advertisers had full screen ads? I know this has been done during some sports games for a few years, but I am curious to know how that works. If I were an advertiser I would want to have a full screen so that there aren’t other things distracting the viewers from the ad I am paying for.

  11. Yes, and putting on your breaking news banners that DirecTV has 'censored' the network is useless and annoying to other customers of other providers when those DTV/U-verse viewers can't even see the banner or your channel!

  12. To which I offer up this: https://www.thedailybeast.com/house-oversight-chair-james-comer-promises-newsmax-hell-investigate-directv Again, theatrics when it's not needed. They did it because they got viewers angry enough to get the government (or one side of it, to be exact) involved. Now, they're threatening to investigate DirecTV for "censoring" Newsmax. Do I dare repeat myself once more on the reality of the situation? I feel like with each passing day that this drags on, I feel more and more of an urge to belt out, "Just give it a rest!" Two days of this was enough. That's all.

  13. Yesterday with FOX's broadcast of the NFC Championship, they showed a new matchup graphic at the start of their broadcast. The rest of the broadcast pretty much used the same graphics package they have been using since 2020. Is this possibly a teaser to a new graphics package debuting at Super Bowl LVII? This new matchup design looks a little out of brand to their current package. The logos are very shiny and if you look closely, there is diagonal lines showing in the background of the team logos. Normally, I wouldn't think this would be a teaser. But after looking back at their past opening matchup graphics, they look completely different. So this definitely confirms the graphic used here is brand new.

  15. Yeah, both the pre-renovation and post-renovation floor plans are in this thread. The studio is actually slightly larger than before, thanks to the deletion of a mechanical room and tech room along the eastern wall. The new NewsNation studio sits in the footprint of the old WPIX newsroom, and also includes the space previously occupied by a control room.

  17. What’s unfortunate about it for anyone but NBC? Michael’s promotion to GMA was a directive by Robin IIRC and an attempt to assemble a more dynamic cast after the departure of Sam and Josh and the failed experiments of Tony Reali and Jesse Palmer. At one point the lineup was Robin, George, Amy, Lara and Ginger which while each incredibly strong in their own regards is not a particularly dynamic ensemble. ABC has somehow made the Michael appointment work really well. He’s still by far the weakest of the ensemble but somehow it works. Robin and George have also become a classic duo. Amy was a perfect fit for the show as well and TJ made a lot of sense too. Losing those two and Cecilia is going to be a tall task to rebuild.

  20. “NewsNation, the cable news channel created from what had been WGN America prior to Nexstar’s acquisition of Tribune Media in 2019, was another area of focus during the call. Execs emphasized that it has been profitable since it launched in rebranded form in 2020. They also noted their plans to program it with 24 hours a day of news from Monday through Friday by the end of 2023 and then fully 24/7 news by the end of 2024.” That’s literally it in a nutshell. Regardless of how much Nexstar screws up The CW, it’s still going to make a profit as opposed to the prior business model. NewsNation has objectively failed in their original stated purpose as a news channel, and no one is watching, and yet they would be losing money continuing to have it as a ION-lite rerun farm that no one would be watching.

  23. Yeah, ever since the program shifted to an emphasis on the main trio: Robin, George, and Michael, it seemed like everyone else (Ginger, Lara, Amy and Jesse) played the second and third fiddle. I can see Lara making more of an impact now to fill the void left by Amy. Seems like ABC News president is now on thin ice in regard to her handling of the Robach-Holmes situation: https://www.thedailybeast.com/abc-news-bleeding-from-self-inflicted-wound-after-gma3-love-scandal?utm_campaign=owned_social&utm_source=facebook_owned_tdb&utm_medium=socialflow&source=TDB&via=FB_Page&utm_medium=socialflow&utm_campaign=owned_social&source=TDB&via=FB_Page&utm_source=facebook_owned_tdb&fbclid=IwAR0ypak1qfZrSjWEE6Hkojj6vv5bpoViK1V5MmVrAwEbYL2IHyh4NfWaU6w

  27. KCAL/KCBS is an absolute disaster. I can’t bare to watch any of their newscasts. WWJ so far, is way better and CBS News Detroit just debuted 8 days ago. Obvious WWJ is somewhat modeling themselves after KDKA. Not surprising, since KDKA Pittsburgh is actually one of the better CBS O&Os.

  30. I am skeptical that a short five to 15 minute episode of "Overtime" from YouTube will help move the needle for CNN's ratings. Regardless of one's opinions of Bill Maher, "Overtime" is just less interesting and compelling than a full episode of his "Real Time" series on HBO. This all comes across to me as CNN pretty much throwing spaghetti at the wall.
    1 point
  31. I don't like this. I was actually just watching some of Maher this morning and was reminded of how much I dislike him. He doesn't offer any unique insight, spends a lot of time complaining about younger generations based on very exaggerated stereotypes, and "both sides"ing everything. And he seems disappointed that his in-studio isn't nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Feels like a bad fit for CNN and a lazy choice. Not producing anything new, just taking something that HBO shot earlier that night.

  32. 4pm might not be far off at this rate, which would match up with their intended launch plans (after considerable revision). One thing I’m legitimately surprised about is WWJ running Entertainment Tonight at 1:35 a.m. … why not at 7:30 p.m.?? Amyre Sr. got her big break in 1975 as one of the first anchors for WGPR-TV’s Big City News, so it really does come full circle.

  36. Yeh, the current graphics package has aged pretty well. I wouldn't mind if they just go with a refreshed look. Similar to what CBS did for Super Bowl LIII. However, here is a few reasons why I think they they would do a full rebrand... or at least a big noticeable refresh. 1. Their graphics font ties into the old Thursday Night Football logo. Now that FOX no longer has TNF, I would think they would want to launch a new brand identity away from their old primetime package. 2. Their College Football broadcasts this past season still used the same graphic package for the 6th straight season. This is probably because they are waiting to do a full rebrand for all their football broadcasts with Super Bowl LVII as the launching point. 3. If you pay attention to other FOX Sports broadcasts, you can see their lower thirds are starting to go full screen again instead of floating. The NFL broadcasts are the only graphics left that still use floating lower thirds. It's possible they are just keeping that same look for the NFL and waiting to make that big change when they broadcast the Super Bowl. As you can see here...

  37. I think it's necessary to reference @Myron Falwell's post from the KCAL thread as it's extremely relevant to the ongoing channel number discussion. Long story short, look at Birmingham's WBMA, which brands as "ABC 33/40". It has not transmitted on the Channel 33 satellite since 2014, and is now regulated to the .2 on 40. WBMA's own low-power signal was on 58, which is also what their Virtual Channel is, but they didn't brand with any mention of 58 at all. What they do have is this mess, none of which have anything to do with the 33 in their brand, and And yet everyone still figures out where to watch James Spann when there's a tornado. In the words of one of our favorite media bloggers: JUST SAYING...

  38. I think next Nexstar and Sinclair cooperate with each other in general. I know Nexstar runs a Sinclair station somewhere in Illinois I believe. And Nexstar has owned Antenna TV and this TV for now how long now? They are still both on Sinclair signals. They seem to have a you scratch my back I scratch yours relationship.

  39. Bumping this thread because I have found a little something in regards to the new set while digging on their creative department's Vimeo account There's also a little glimpse of new weather graphics shown in the screen to the left. I wasn't sure if I wanted to share the video instead of screenshots, but I suggest to see this one ASAP because they may quickly remove this video. By the looks of it, it’s a modified and small scaled version of the KTLA set. Good to see that at least some progress has already been made

  41. Speaking of culture wars, guess what Newsmax also did? They set up a website called IWantNewsmax.com (I'm not linking this). Here's what they want disgruntled DirecTV subscribers to do: They want them to call DirecTV and demand that Newsmax be brought back, or else they'll drop DirecTV. They want them to call their senators and representatives and stop the - ahem - "political censorship." They want them to go to said website and sign a petition saying that they fully back Newsmax. I talked about this in The News Center server. It's nothing but theatrics. Carriage disputes like this are the inner workings of business. Channels don't come cheap. Carriers have to negotiate on a deal for every channel. This is why you've been seeing regional sports networks drop like flies in the late 2010s. And "political censorship?" That's a bit rich considering DirecTV replaced Newsmax in the interim with The First, which is markedly similar to Newsmax in terms of content. DirecTV really wanted to continue carrying Newsmax. Newsmax wanted DirecTV to pay them for their position on the program guide, since their ratings are declining. The contract was allowed to expire instead. Another thing: If you connect the dots and look at how OAN reacted to also being dropped by DirecTV and eventually being dropped by Verizon (both from last year), you'll begin to notice that all they like to talk about is how the opposition are a bunch of losers, crybabies, etc. for doing what they did. Nowhere in their complaints do they state that they've simply been dropped -- they substitute the word for either "cancelled" or "censored." Both urged people to "join the fight" and call government officials in urging the providers responsible to reconsider. Guess what happened? OAN's efforts were ultimately fruitless, and if memory serves me right, Newsmax's effort will also come up short, simply because they failed to realize that the act of providers dropping channels is all part of business.

  42. They even named HLN, which they identified as its old name, CNN Headline News but is basically Investigation Discovery 2 at this point… what with CNN having shifted it away from news to true crime before their recent gutting and offloading of the network to the WBD unit that runs ID, and Vice, which carries only one news program but runs mostly documentaries. In picking their examples of “uber-liberal” news outlets, Newsmax reached so high in trying to prove their point, they’re halfway to the Milky Way.

  45. I’m gonna disagree here, I actually like it. Granted, the graphics definitely have that “in house, small market” quality that I can’t quite put a finger on, and there are better ways to do minimalism, but for a station in freakin Northern Michigan, this is great. I’d prefer it if my local station used something like these graphics instead of the Frankenstein’s monster of a package that WISH-TV is using now. Not everything has to have a bunch of glossy, flying 3D BS distracting you from everything. Those looks are far too common these days (looking at you, Nexstar and Gray). It seems like a lot of designers are stuck in that late 90s to early 2010s period of design, and it’s good to see a station break the mold.

  46. Fox is basically a sports programming service with a forgettable primetime block of crappy reality shows—including 33 different shows that Gordon Ramsey can scream in and 9 different iterations of The Masked Singer (a fad that has long passed its expiration date)—and The Simpsons and Family Guy, two shows that will never die. That might be the goal Nexstar has for the CW, but they’ll never get anything close to the NFL or MLB. So why NOT turn the station into a O&O for a sports programming service that you own?
