Why is this even a thing? And why is anyone even questioning their “future” on GMA or how ABC will handle it? Two married adults fell for each other, separated from their respective spouses and have begun a new relationship together. It is sad that two marriages are ending but that is a normal part of life. Maybe they’ll address it on air or issue a statement when they’re ready… but who cares?4 points

Honestly, as a straight guy with many female friends, some going back 25 years, the ONLY thing here that really screams more than friendship is multiple butt slaps. And yes, having existing marriages might not make for a good look, but sheesh, this isn't even in the same zip code as a Lauer type situation.3 points

I remember reading the paperwork for the KSFY/KDLT waiver. Granted, that was written to convince the FCC to allow the waiver to approve that deal, but it painted a bleak picture for KDLT under Red River and made it sound like a stand-alone KSFY was hurting as well. The financials of launching news on a station with no established brand, no network available, and many hours of programming to fill are yikes. Not to mention finding a way to staff it. We're in an environment where stations in much larger markets and an established history are struggling to recruit employees. Maybe they do news on the cheap from existing facilities in Fargo with MMJs in Sioux Falls... but still... trying to think about spending that money in 2023. Weird.3 points

It's as if someone hired a p.i to follow them rather than a random paparazzi stumbling onto the two at a bar or something.2 points

What are all your thoughts on Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough? This is pretty much the same situation, just without the pictures in the Daily Mail (which I have no problem with personally since they have been separated from their partners). Mika and Joe are still doing fine all these years on MSNBC.2 points

Likely because all of the local talent they hired has zero name recognition in the market?2 points

They took that channel in '09 because of early thoughts that mountainous terrain would be V-Low friendly which proved horrifically incorrect.2 points

I know it gets its share of critics #onhere, but I don't hate the current WABC look. It's simple (without being too simple), clean, and well-executed. Not everything has to be elaborate and splashy. (Of course, there was the NEWS YORK'S #1 NEWS incident, but...)2 points

Very unlikely this would be addressed on air. If anything, through a statement or messages on their social media accounts. Importantly, this was (is) a relationship between two consenting adults who are not professionally subordinate to one another or in a position to influence the other's employment. Whether or not their relationship constituted an extramarital affair is unclear, but even if it did, it's not a situation for which a morality clause is typically invoked and is unlikely to affect either's employment with the company.1 point

Well, Forum can't snag ABC. Gray just renewed its affil agreement that keeps the Alphabet on KSFY.1 point

Why are Drew Barrymore and Dr. Phil involved in a promo about local news?1 point

Exactly. From a fiscal perspective, buying this station now to create that kind of product at $1.4 Million with these interest rates and without an affiliate certainly makes me question if there are alternative motives.1 point

The “KCAL9 News” brand is clearly being retired. Obviously the station will still be KCAL9 outside of news, but the news operation is going to be renamed “CBS News Los Angeles” across both stations.1 point

It was a 'run for fun' station which barely made any market impact (it still carries YTA as a primary in 2022!), so it sounds like transmitter work/relocation needs to be done and it has half the signal of KSFY and KDLT. It's doubtful they get any of the big four, but we'll see if this works out (though with KELO's domination, it feels like a lost cause without any affiliation).1 point

Ouch. That's a lot of money for such a tiny purchase. That or inflation is killer.1 point

As I mentioned in the WPIX thread, I was fortunate enough to visit LA a few weeks ago. Just like how KTLA has an advantage over WPIX in terms of looks, KABC had a beautiful clean graphics package that I wish WABC could adopt. It would make them watchable.1 point

Limit the area where the cut-in is inserted to the actual warned area; it wouldn't need to be vaguely a zip code any longer and could be by certain coordinates. I do like another idea though myself; the WSI weather apps have a feature where a warned area can be drawn out on a map by the met and a video or text warning only goes to users affected by the warning in that specific shape (of course, if they allow the app GPS access). Only a few stations really take advantage of it, though. That honestly seems where things will end up going as we go into this transition.1 point

Accessibility guidelines for those with visual or hearing impairments from the FCC themselves literally spell out what is required for a weather emergency. It can be an ADA violation not to do so because you're putting those without the ability to hear a NOAA radio warning or siren warning in danger, and in a professional manner, can get your AMS/NWA seal revoked. Also if you REALLY need to watch or hear the game uninterrupted, Paramount+ has an NFL-only stream and Westwood One radio and the local radio calls are accessible in many ways. That, and the end of the game was immediately recapped after the game. Public safety>>>>>>degenerate gamblers. Hopefully (and with how many times it's been promised since digital television started, it just needs to happen), ATSC 3.0 actually takes the 'zip code-based cut-in' carve-out seriously and will end these situations once and for all.1 point

The FCC does not require stations to relay weather alerts. They are only "required to provide the capability for the President to address the public during a national emergency." (https://www.fcc.gov/emergency-alert-system) You can make the argument that relaying alerts from the National Weather Service is in the public interest, but it is not required.1 point

Our house was frustrated to the say the least, especially once it was evident that the storm was losing steam for a tornado to materialize. I don’t think KHOU, or any station when this happens, should get flack for doing their job of keeping people safe. Josh Allem has had a number of clutch plays in his career, fans missing the latest one won’t hurt.1 point

KHOU-TV in Criticized for Interrupting End of Bills-Lions Game - Sports Illustrated I'm honestly not sure where this conversation should be talked about in, so, mods, feel free to move this post if necessary. KHOU Channel 11 Houston cut off the last 25 seconds of today's Bills-Lions game in order to cover a tornado warning in the Houston area.1 point

Camille Edwards worked at WPVI from 1997-2003. Shirleen worked there from 2010-2015. There was no overlap. The only thing about WPVI that helped Shirleen get her job was that she did a great job at an ABC O&O close to home and it was easy for management in New York to notice her.1 point
