  2. 1. Can we rename this thread? 2. Do we think Chris Licht and Discovery will unveil new graphics for CNN sometime soon? The current package has been around since August 2014 (Jeff Zucker took over January 2013), with the only real change being the font in April 2016 (and maybe some of the gradients?). I think it works but I would like to see something a little smaller, and where the main banner text doesn't have to keep getting squished to fit.

  3. WDIV's NewsBeat in the 80s and 90s. Their 11pm was known as NightBeat.

  6. Another specialty name that WBRZ has used (and, IINM, they still use this today): 2une In (for the morning edition).

  7. A better question: 3. When do we think they'll blow up HLN and turn it into something that isn't 79% true crime shows?

  8. Another option: let the networks jointly gobble up Tegna. That way, they can more quickly obsolete the network-affiliate model.

  9. For me, I liked the format of the early Prime Time KCAL news block. The 8p hour was designated as the California Report, the 9p hour was the World Report and the 10p was the normal local broadcast.

  10. KMGH Channel 7 in Denver used Nightscene in 1983 when that was the Rocky Mountain CBS station (it was News 7 Nightscene).

  12. Because nothing says “trust me, I’m not just a greedy hedge fund manager” than using character assassination to blackmail your opponents. /s I’m no Tegna fanboy, but based on his behavior (and the nature of the purchase), Soo Kim has no business owning TV stations. The broadcast industry will be better off without him if/when this merger fails.

  13. Train. Wreck. In every way possible. Technical, understanding of the market, talent. Don't have any intel on numbers. The news judgment is still very much "Hagerstown" - for example, when POTUS traveled to Hagerstown, they treated it like how any small market would treat a Presidential visit. Multiple reporters, lead story, etc. The problem is, you're appealing to a market where having POTUS around is normal. He lives here. Content is repeated and uninspired. Nothing new or distinctive. Talent isn't distinctive. Many of the holdovers from Hagerstown are clearly in over their heads. Some of the new hires are uncomfortable to watch as well. The partnership with "DC Realtime News" stringer is uncomfortable because they'll use his commentary on crime from Twitter as content in newscasts. Only having NewsNation and other Nexstar stations for outside content presents major problems and leads to a lot of 2-3 day old filler content. Lots of political spots in newscasts right now, with MD-6, VA-7, and VA-10 house races. It will be interesting to see what fills breaks after November 8th. Channel numbers aren't as relevant as they once were, but on most systems, you won't find WDVM anywhere near WRC, WTTG, WJLA, WJLA 24/7, or WUSA. So finding viewers through channel surfing won't be easy. They might have a better chance on that front if they programmed more news on WDCW and threw syndicated leftovers onto WDVM.

  14. Launching a barebones local tv news operation in an already heavily oversaturated market and producing an out-of-home marketing campaign featuring a bunch of nameless stranger's faces and giving people absolutely no idea what or where your "new local news" product even is... not sure if the question is if they've found an audience but can the audience even find them?

  15. I mean between discussions here, on Discord, and of all the things you can read on FTVLive, is anyone surprised that KDVR/KWGN is so erratic that they go through sets like underwear? The management of that duopoly has been in question for a VERY long time.

  16. Well, that didn't last long. Fox Weather seems to have killed off the smooth jazz automated weather maps after just one week. Starting tonight, America's Weather Tonight is now a 30-minute show, rerunning continuously throughout the 10pm-1am ET timeslots. With this change, Ian Oliver and Brigit Mahoney now co-host the show instead of alternating nights solo-hosting it. Well, I mean, I guess you could say "days" solo-hosting it, as based on the Fox Weather Alert System behind the hosts, this was recorded around 3:47pm, shortly before Ian and Brigit start their actual live Across America show at 4pm ET. (Please forgive the awkward face Ian is making in this screencap. The first screencap I took had their eyes closed, so I went for a second one and got this. By the time I tried to take a 3rd screencap, they were already off the screen.)

  17. Well, earlier this year it was announced that they renewed Forensic Files II for two more seasons, so it looks like we might be stuck with HLN's current formula for 2 more years.

  18. It seems like WCBS is listening to us lol Dick and Dana (same with Alice) always made a great team so this is exciting! Also definitely makes room for a possible expansion to 4pm in the near future....

  19. I think it looks fine, but some shine on the wall and column elements would give it a bit more of that big market, HD zeal. That's why it feels dated already. The weather center monitor wall is solid white, which feels a bit lifeless and corporate, and there's no branding on that desk. But this is also Lafayette, LA, we're talking about. Perfectly suitable, and I bet the talent are thrilled to have something so new.

  20. Even if you have the best news product in the market (and this certainly isn't it), that you have NO actual web video presence outside after-the-fact YouTube uploads and the rest of your schedule is made up of low-tier stuff nobody else will touch, they need to do a lot more. WFMZ is the gold standard of 'scrappy and solid indie news done right'; DCNN isn't even at a 1/3 of KUSI.
