  1. I miss the All News Channel. It just reported the news. It wasn't fancy. It just reported the news. And didn't make a big deal about them just trying to report the news without all of the "bias" in cable news. That's probably why they disappeared years back. They just reported the news. And did I mention that they just reported the news?

  2. Reading between the lines here, The WHIZ ownership wants it to be a Zanesville Station mainly. No Moving it Closer to Columbus or anything like that. Marquee could do that but it is used to Small-Town stations. They want WHIZ to survive as a NBC affiliate in Zanesville.
    3 points
  3. Of course, Zanesville is a separate market from Columbus. Marquee could add another Big 4 network to WHIZ's lineup, or at worse try to move WHIZ into Columbus as an independent, marking the end of the Zanesville market.

  4. That is Gray graphics. WOIO was the first ex-Raycom station to switch out of LIM4. They're not getting new graphics at the moment, because they're not pressured to do so.

  5. I'll say what I said on Discord: The larger lower thirds work well on mobile, though the mixed case text and Newsnet's habit of cramming entire sentences into lower thirds doesn't help them. The rest of it? Ehhhhhh. The little orange bar above the logo is too small, white text on bright orange is hard to read, the ticker uses TVNT's favorite stretched Helvetica, and the logo in general is just Not Great. Don't even get me started on the slogan, which is just dripping with "DA LIBERAL-RUN BIASED MEDIA!!!". Big step back, in my opinion. The last package was the only thing the channel really had going for it. A lot of this feels thrown together, and almost cartoony in a way. Someone I know compared some of it to default templates in programs like vMix. Also note that the entire package leans right...

  6. This is what I heard when that new slogan hit my brain stem. Which is not a good thing. As for the graphics, my first thought is 'fake infomercial newscast-looking'. So technically, it's 'news as it used to be'...in an Amazing Discoveries episode.

  7. Just as a benchmark, WCMH is essentially the same as WVIT or WBTS but with cheap packaging (graphics, music) and high turnover. Why would anyone go there versus smaller market NBC O&Os?

  8. I guess they couldn't decide on the branding. They slapped a "KDKA" in a white square next to the CBS News Pittsburgh logo. They clearly spared no expense with that /s.

  10. This is what happens when you lose your roots, should stayed as MiNews 26.

  11. I wish CNN would go back it’s Roots in Atlanta and back to the hard news format that made it a household name. When CNN moved majority of its shows to NY that was the beginning of the decline. It’s probably wishful thinking, But I would love to hear Live from “The CNN World Headquarters in Atlanta”

  12. They need to italicize the text in the ticker to match everything else. >_>

  13. That may be so, but Marquee is a small fish in a large pond. If NBC and Nexstar wants it, it's in the bag.

  14. Reception wise, I live northwest of Columbus, and I get a very faint signal (but no video or audio) from Channel 30 (WHIZ). That Channel 17 translator is now WDEM-CD, itself an HC2 wasteland. I'm thinking that WHIZ will remain the NBC affiliate for Zanesville unless Nexstar significantly downsizes and sells to NBC. Only then I can see WHIZ go independent. And yes, being a news intensive independent in that case is an option.
    1 point
  15. That was always my thought, except it probably should have been done some 15 to 20 years ago. On analog, WHIZ-TV on channel 18 was non-existent in Columbus. I have been going there for the last 30+ years and I have never been able to catch that station with a watchable signal, either pre- or post DTV transition. They would have to boost power/tower height, relocate the tower, and/or change the community of license if they want OTA coverage in the capital city. Getting on Spectrum, Dish and DirecTV is another story. Programming-wise? Columbus may now be Ohio's largest municipality in terms of population, and is now the state's second-largest TV market (after Cleveland). But I'm not sure if there is enough of audience or enough available quality programming for a new independent. Going with a news-intensive format like WDVM (former NBC affil WHAG-TV) in Hagerstown would be risky but it's an option. And WSYX or WBNS-TV will put up a fight if Marquee attempts to add the other networks on a WHIZ sub, as neither want to lose their Zanesville audiences. I would hate to see a legacy station like WHIZ-TV lose their network and then get turned into a wasteland for subchannels and/or informercials on 18.1 (see WMGM or KENV after each lost NBC). There was barely room for two indies in the late '80s when WTTE was still a quasi-indie during Fox's early days and Chillicothe-based WWHO (then WWAT) used a low-power translator on channel 17 to get its programming into Columbus. And just to prove my CBUS street cred is legit, I can recall watching W08BV in the late '80s and early '90s with its mix of syndicated shows, movies, and MuchMusic imported from Canada. Too bad they were an LPTV.

  17. Here we go . I fixed the awkward white square CBS. Your Welcome. I did a 2nd one with the Group W logo for @newscopter7 and @tjt24.

  18. I wouldn't mind a suite of channels like Peacock and Pluto already have, so you'd have a channel of "Parts Unknown" next to ones with "Larry King Live", "Style with Elsa Klench" and "Pinnacle" episodes, or "On This Day" rolling news from a moment in history. And of course, "Forensic Files" and old CourtTV content, since Ion Mystery now draws less from that archive. There was so much potential with this service that was wasted from day one for more shows about current politics, media criticism and 'other news' content which should just be on regular CNN.

  19. They ought to bring back the italicized Group W font and make it fit the box KD KA That’s the recognized brand in Pittsburgh—not third placed CBS News.

  20. Good God. Those newscasts can't get any worse. From some of the stuff I seen from Marquee, more people will be running to WCMH to keep their sanity

  21. A number of cable providers automatically give you HBO Max if you're subscribed to linear HBO (aka the HBO cable channels) through them. Since anyone such subscribers have to log in via their provider login (in my case, my Xfinity account), it should be easy to provide the same linear streams that CNNgo has (CNN, HLN, and CNNI).

  23. I went ahead and cancelled CNN+ before I was charged another month of $3. Haven’t opened it since the first day. This should be part of HBO Max, honestly and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not there quickly. Would give it a news presence and you could pretty easily make a linear stream out of it like NBC News Now and the like with the occasional live programs mixed in with library/pre-taped stuff. But Zucker wanted to try and make his own little kingdom isolated from the rest and, well, whoops.

  28. I just felt like stopping by and dropping some thoughts that have been on my mind -- The serious pain of seeing faces you sort of almost felt like you were friends with after watching the news as often as I did in 2020 (the pandemic has seriously warped my concept of time) and then to see them suddenly suffering from glioblastoma and get wrenched away from our presence has been absolutely heart-wrenching. I do not actually live in Atlanta or DC but I fell into a bit of a "local national" news-watching binge during the height of COVID and the unrest that happened later that summer, and Jovita Moore and Wendy Rieger were two of the few anchors that really stuck out to me from that time. They were so calm, composed, and very straightforward, but still had that unique delivery in their onscreen presence. There were moments that just resonate with me (among much reminiscing) - Jovita's absolute calm in the marathon evening session on the first night of Atlanta protests with Jorge or just delivering night after night amid the absolute frenzy of the Georgia elections. Also, Wendy delivering the 5PM in that position she's held for so many years solo at that very desk carried more meaning than ever. And to go through and recover from heart surgery all during that time in 2020; what a freakin' warrior. That very tender heart-to-heart conversation she had with Doreen post-retirement about the direction she wanted to pave for herself and how excited she was to embark on a new chapter was so meaningful because they knew each other for so long and recognized the significance of that moment in their careers and lives. They are simply two local legends (among many that have also tragically left us during this time) who were taken way, way too soon from us in such unforgiving and painful fashion, and that heartbreak is just exacerbated by the fact that this pandemic is still lingering on with us, continuing to warp our collective sense of societal reality. They will be sorely missed.

  29. This is like going from MG’s last graphics package (WCMH, WFLA, WKRN) to Nexstar NBC graphics, a package that is the symbol of failure. Great job, Gray.

  33. I believe this will be the first news department in Seattle to use the "Network/Channel" branding since KSTW in 1998. All of the other Seattle news stations use call letters for their branding (KOMO News, KING 5 News, and KIRO 7 News).

  34. KCPQ has gone unrecognizable to its core audience. Generic, boring, dumb Fox mandates. I'll miss this branding, it was a part of my childhood and literally a piece of Seattle culture. Older folks will remember when they still had the "ding-ding" sound effect in their station ID. Puget Sound Television, they called it, at that time. And of course, Q13.

  35. The WHIZ Media Group, long controlled by the Littick family of Zanesville, has sold one of Ohio's last family-owned television outlets. NBC affiliate WHIZ-TV and its associated radio stations are going to Salisbury MD-based Marquee Broadcasting, which owns WMDT in their home market. The big takeaway is what becomes of that relationship with NBC when the latest contract expires...will WCMH-TV try to claim exclusivity for NBC in all of central Ohio?
