There is no recorded evidence of this, but an LPTV in Phoenix tried to do its own local news in 1993, with News Director/anchor Jack Rebney (better known now for the viral video outtakes from a Winnebago dealers tape he did a few years prior). This was bad, but the "KDMA (K25DM) News" was probably worse. The previous Channel 53 in Fresno wasn't known for its high production values either:

What a disaster. The whole newscast is just content lifted from other news outlets (including some from other Fresno stations). Looks like a failed reporter who is just putting his YouTube show full of stolen content onto TV?

Well, when you consider that it was a legendary image campaign launched by WFAA-TV almost 35 years ago, and it's been going strong almost as long on WNIR with very little change....

The Gray looks are so bad that WVUE looks good in comparison. I watched them again recently when tornados came through NOLA. Those ancient Raycom graphics still look better than WBTV does after having been “Gray-ified.”

If it were another public figure such as an actor who takes a leave of absence from a TV show or a singer who cancels concert dates, the press would speculate and demand answers as to the cause. There’s often a double-standard in television news when it comes to on-air talent, who are public figures, and their lives. Suddenly, the newsroom decides to respect a person’s privacy to the point of not even acknowledging anything has occurred.

Glad to hear Matt Quinn is in charge - I enjoy his aesthetic. This also means the Meredith legacy stations should stay in tact for a while… Hopefully, WVUE is on his radar…

I know why - because neither stations' opens were done by Gray's hub and it's very obvious. Almost anybody can design and animate stuff better than the Gray hub.

RIP to perhaps one of the best opens ever. Gonna miss that shooting star. Other than that, nice new gfx. -- Matt

I don't know why; but I feel like with the current Gray graphics packages, WAVE and KGMB/KHNL have the best implementations of them so far.

Does the average WLS viewer even know who John Idler is?

What has she ever done to justify being fired? I have said before and will say again, what is it that some people have against her? She may not be the 'greatest anchor that has ever lived', she is hardly the worse that has (or will ever) grace the Chicago airwaves. Her and Alan have good chemistry and on a personal level; she was very nice the two times I met her (which is often not the case with meeting news people). It's fair to debate the way she presents the news and such, but outside of that, there's zero reason to dog her as many often do for no reason.

Matt also did quite a bit of work for WKYC, if you recall. God no! The Meredith look is an inconsistent hodgepodge. It's not a complete package. Get rid of that thing. Get rid of every Gray look. Wipe the slate.
