  1. Whoa whoa let’s slow down

  2. a couple thoughts I shared in the discord I want to bring over here. Hate to say it, but I agree… failure is the likely outcome. Do not like what I’ve seen. Queen City News is not a good name to begin with… Here’s my problem with Queen City News… and all the other generic names (mostly Gray) affiliates have been switching to… It does not, in any way, indicate the fact that it is a broadcast news outlet. “But that’s what they want to do! It’s about more than just terrestrial television now!” That’s true. But at the core of it, the product is still video news, with an emphasis on live and immediate VIDEO news reporting. That will always be true for this business no matter if the main medium people consume the product on changes from over the air TV, to streaming, an app, a website, or whatever else may come in the future. The problem is, this name sounds like what you’d name the free pamphlet newspaper handed out at coffee shops. The name, does not in any way, indicate how the outlet is different from the local newspaper. It does not indicate that, even if you’re only patronizing them through a digital outlet, you can expect strong audio and video to tell the stories, not just written text. It deemphasizes what makes a video news outlet unique and different from the rest of the news outlets out there. Names like ‘Queen City News,’ ‘Alaska’s News Source,’ etc. do not at all indicate that the outlet is anything more than a startup local news blog. Think I’m wrong? Visit QueenCityNews.com right now, and tell me what you see. You’ll see a website for another outlet already called Queen City News, that is exactly the kind of thing I described above. A local news blog straight out of 2005! Nevermind the fact that clearly, Nexstar is not really concerned with the digital product, or it would have bought the domain name that matches what it is calling its News product. That is BASIC cross-platform branding stuff. This is just an example of Nexstar not using common sense when trying to build a brand. Believe it or not… I think Sinclair is the example of how to do this right. When they rename their affiliates to deemphasize network affiliation, they make the names still portray the sense of urgency and immediacy of broadcast news. “Iowa News Now,” “Ohio 24/7 Now” are names that (while I still have problems with) still portray the immediacy and urgency only a broadcast news outlet can bring—whether it’s on their website, OTT channels, or terrestrial channels—in a way names like “Queen City News” do not. Would would I have done? I wouldn’t change anything. But if I had no choice, I would go with something like “Fox46 Queen City News” or “Queen City News on Fox 46”… or “Queen City 46” if we don’t want to mention Fox. I’d be much more okay with those names. Heck, some of the most legendary stations in the country get away with naming themselves in such a way. See “ABC 7 Eyewitness News” or “6 ABC Action News.” You can have a ‘fun’ name for your newscasts, but people need to know they are, in fact, watching a newscast. I get that they want to be forward thinking and emphasize that their product is available on more than just TV. That’s why they could brand their TV newscasts as ‘Queen City News on FOX46’ or “Queen City 46 News”… while on the web, just calling themselves Queen City News. As someone on discord pointed out… if a random guy driving down the highway sees a billboard for “Queen City News”… how do they know even what it is? If I saw a billboard for “Fox46 Queen City News,” or “Queen City 46 News” I would at least know what it is. Or if they could even say “Queen City News: Always Local. Always Streaming” or “Queen City News: On Air. Online. Always streaming” That would be a great way to convey to people what you do, while letting them know you can watch them and consume their content on more than just TV. But holy crap, that logo is awful too. I’m not usually a guy to be a huge pessimist… and like to give things a chance. But if I lived in that market, I would have considered watching this station before this rebrand. Afterwards, it looks like a station that is trying too hard to hide the fact they are, in fact, a TV station

  3. Don‘t you realize it was recorded 10 years ago - they just re-run the same set each week… (LA and San Diego are the same way, too…) J

  5. Seeing as how Fox mortally wounded themselves in Charlotte swiping away the affiliation from WCCB and slapping together a newscast on the cheap would propel them to the top...the station has been a tortured mess ever since, even with Nexstar coming in to try and make something out of them, but seriously overthinking it in the process. If anything, it's a distraction. Give it a year or two and "FOX 46" may be back sooner than we know it.

  14. First WDKY in Lexington, now WJZY in Charlotte. This is sure to be an interesting New Year for two of Nexstar's FOX affiliates.

  15. Uhhh.... Also, it's a bit weird to include your competitor's logos in a promo, even for a split second!

  16. This gives flashbacks to the Group W era of WCNC when they had the WPCQ calls and a management who just let WBTV and WSOC steal their lunch. City-based brandings also kind of wed you to only news of that type; you've just told your Kannapolis, Rock Hill, Concord, and Belmont viewers that their issues are less important than those of Charlotte.

  17. I do NOT like the name - it sounds like one of the Nexstar portal websites from a decade ago.

  18. Dana Tyler did the 5, 6, and 11 today. Somethings up. I don't remember the last time I saw her on 11p.

  19. Yes, yes, because THAT'S the stations' problems. Not the decades of mismanagement, budget cuts, and subsequent poor ratings. Really, most here need to get a grip. I don't want to say that CBS Local is a downgrade from modern Enforcer (though I think it is), but it DEFINITELY wouldn't be some magical problem-solver, either. More than just about any cosmetic adjustment we've ever discussed here, such a theme change across the board might be the most unnoticeable of all time, to the average viewer. Hell, I have no problem saying that neither Gari nor Stephen Arnold have produced the best adaptations of the WBBM signature. They just happened to be the powerhouse music companies of their eras, therefore most accessible for the average client.

  22. Los Angeles became the largest TV market to air an ATSC 3 signal. KTTV (RF 11) is the host station, carrying Fox 11, KCOP 13 & KTLA 5 main channels. KTTV's ATSC1 simulcast is on KTLA's RF 35 stick, while the subchannels (11.2-4) are on KCOP's RF 13 stick.

  24. That looks so generic that if feels like a 12 year-old Logopedia contributor made it for one of those fake TV station wikis in honor of the TV station serving their SimCity. Alas...it is real.

  26. I'm not so sure there won't be a KDLT-style waiver attempted here for a duopoly. The article published by KVRR seems to imply such. https://www.kvrr.com/2021/11/30/red-river-broadcast-forum-communications-reach-purchase-agreement-for-fargo-duluth-tv-stations/

  27. Living in the market, it was only a matter of time, and sorry that I don't keep up on the Speculatron as much as I should... My pipe theory was that it would be Nexstar (who has CBS for the state outside of Fargo) who would then do an affiliation swap to get CBS from Gray (Who has Fox for ND outside of Fargo). It is unfortunate that there will only be two broadcast TV Voices in the market going forward, but in their presser, local ownership was a driving factor... Which can be appreciated, right?

  28. Are you trying to imply that MCTYW is weird? You're on thin ice... xD

  29. Yes. WREG and WATE were the first two stations to roll out the new website format. I believe @KentBrockman made a mention of this over on Discord a while back.

  30. Apparently, Jim Gardner will have been there for the balance of that half-century of MCTYW, the way I understand this.

  35. Okay. I tried to mind my own business in retirement, but here we go: You sir, have been without a doubt an negative nancy when it comes to NewsNation. I get it, you miss Matlock, In the Heat of the Night etc. Well guess what, Uncle Perry doesn't give a crap if you miss those shows. NewsNation, despite it being a failure is still making profit for Nexstar. So do us a favor, get out of this forum or we will have @Weetersor others throw you out. Capice!

  40. It's not a complete overhaul. Non-news junkies wouldn't immediately notice a difference. It's just an evolved look for some various graphic elements. I've already seen some of the "updated" look on KGW.

  41. Most of the Pulitzer-owned stations used jcbD Design for their news graphics as mentioned earlier (KOAT, WYFF, KCCI, WDSU, WXII, WGAL etc...). By 1998, all of Pulitzer's stations & properties were bought and sold to Hearst-Argyle Television (then owners of WCVB, WISN, WTAE, KMBC, WDTN, WBAL, WAPT, KITV, WPBF, WNAC Fox64 and several others).
