  1. I came THIS CLOSE to rechristening the thread as CBS Early This Mornings News Show. Oh, and the lower thirds suck. The rest of everything is solid.

  2. Just leave it. History proves that CBS will circle back to "This Morning" in 10-12 years. We will be ahead of the curve.

  3. Agreed. The graphics are very CNN and the CBS bug is too small, otherwise the lower third is a nice look, much improved! The name change however was utterly unnecessary. If this fails, give up the morning attempts and hand the slot to the local cbs affiliates.

  4. No, they didn't. The package they're using is 5 years old. They keep intermixing that with graphics from the 2013 package and the CBSN package. It's a branding mess. It shows your audience that you are unorganized and as it bleeds into the journalism, the audience senses that the stations aren't doing their best coverage.

  5. Or it will be renamed "The Early Show" in 3 years.

  6. The lower thirds look like it should be called "CNN Mornings." Especially when there's breaking news and the orange turns red. Also, my local affiliate still has the wrong time zone and wrong weather on the ticker.

  7. If the franchise's past history is any predictor of the future, in 18-21 months there will be a new CBS News boss, and she or he will blow up "CBS Mornings" and try a new format with new personalities. I'm just a viewer with no horse in the race. I wonder if CBS' morning offering hasn't slid downhill since Bill Kurtis anchored it.

  8. I feel like most everyone else the name change was completely unnecessary. It seems like to me CBS had actually gotten some traction with CBS This Morning. Why throw all that away for a new name? I love the Eye Opener and am glad that it wasn't discarded. But I agree with the poster earlier on who said it is slowly devolving into a tease for the show ahead rather than serving as a look at your world in 90 seconds. The music will grow on me, I suspect. I love the new graphics and studio. I also like the fact that talent isn't confined to the main desk and is moving around a bit more. While I'm disappointed Anthony Mason is no longer part of day to day activities, I'm looking forward to the pieces to come from him which I think he excels at. I'm willing to give Nate the benefit of the doubt, but it seems to me he just sat there today like a bump on a pickle. Not sure what was up with that. He showed a lot more personality during the time he filled in for Tony while he was out on paternity leave. All in all, as long as they continue to focus on hard news the first hour with a bit more features in the second hour, I'll keep watching.

  9. Can't forget The CBS Morning News with Sally Quinn and Hughes Rudd from 1973.

  10. Personally, I genuinely enjoyed the relaunched program. - I appreciated that the 7am hour is still dedicated to the important news stories from the previous day (and the report on the COVID-era overcrowded hospital crisis being the top story was a brilliant editor's decision). I enjoyed almost all of day one's segments and the consistent tone in both hours. - The graphics are alright (didn't love them at first, but I feel they'll grow on me after a while). Love the use of white, black and yellow though. Meanwhile, I love the new set now in action (the smooth warm lighting, balance of cool blues and warm yellows on the walls, and the green room are highlights) and personally, I'm glad the windows are covered -- because I'd rather not see the view across the street of storefronts of Gap, Old Navy, McDonald's among others (and that studio with the ribbon LEDs on the corner). The election set was very well adapted. - Nate Burleson made for a very good co-host and I think he'll grow into the role real well and sooner rather than later. I really liked what I saw so far and cannot wait for more. Congrats to the hosts & crew on a successful first broadcast and (hopefully) a consistent & strong product that'll last... quite longer than the average.

  11. Maybe they should just make him the third co-anchor officially.

  12. I watched the first block and enjoyed the tone of the program. I really appreciated that the top story focused on the crisis of overwhelmed hospitals (due to COVID surges) through the perspective of a doctor in Texas upset that he is unable to give people the care they need. A nice change of pace for morning news and a good shift away from basic general assignment reporting.

  13. Sandra & Joe solid pairing that would work well on weekdays, but the current line up is already solid. WABC really has strong anchor talent currently.

  14. Today marks David Murphy's final broadcast as weekday morning meteorologist. The rest of the team have done a fantastic job of celebrating him and his 30-year career at Action News, and the clips they featured from the rest of the AccuWeather team were very sweet. I grew up with the whole team since I was still in elementary school, and Murph's weather reports always made me smile before getting out the door. I will miss him for sure, but he definitely deserves retirement. I wish a great, fun, lasting and... restful next chapter.

  15. Their morning program featuring Charles Kuralt and Diane Sawyer in the 80s topped Today for second place for a brief period. Their program in 1998 topped GMA for a second place finish one week during GMA’s failed McRee/Newman experiment. I don’t think CTM ever notched a full week out of 3rd place but did have a few days at #2 and even #1 after the Super Bowl iirc.

  16. I wish WCBS would use a ticker like this rather than the one they use. I also don’t think it’s necessary to have a ticker on all newscasts.

  17. About bloody time. The logo always seemed dated.

  19. Just throwing it out there. Should this thread be retired, since This Morning is done, with all relevant posts moved to a new Mornings thread, or would anyone prefer just a renaming of this discussion?

  20. Nope -- everything was done at the desk.

  21. It needs to be bigger. You can barely see it. I literally had to zoom in to this picture to actually see it.

  22. Huh...that's the same one which popped up during Steelers pre-season games, so there's a change in the making for sure.

  23. It looks so out of place- almost like it's an afterthought... "Hey Larry, there's no logo bug. Just throw something in, and don't worry about the proportions".

  24. I noticed that too. And it’s a pleasant change to have the logo bug on the left side of the screen rather than the right.

  25. Watching The Price Is Right, and it appears that new small CBS bug will also be used across daytime and primetime, as well.

  26. Looks like there is a difference depending on who owns the station. The first Picture is CBS O&O KOVR, the 2nd is Tegna owned KFMB, the third is Cox owned KIRO TV. Look at the difference in tickers or lack their of.

  27. I really like the new music, set, and graphics! Very clean and polished.

  28. It wasn’t too bad but I’m struggling to understand the differentiating point is for moving to TS, changing the name, adding Nate, etc. Doesn’t seem like anything today made the show necessarily stronger or more attractive than what we just watched Friday. Viewership is likely to reflect that.

  29. Which is great for Sundays when more people have the time to sit and watch more long-form reporting, but think about the average morning audience- they want news, weather, and want to get on their way. CBS used to at least have that when the Eye Opener was really "your world in 90 Seconds", but that has largely given way to teasers for the days show (example, today Gayle got to light up the new CBS Times Square billboard).

  30. So I Craig at the desk when the show starts? If so this is giving off GMA/CBS Mornings vibes LOL!

  31. With WABC updating it’s bug during news to the new ABC logo, but not updating it elsewhere just yet, I’m assuming a graphics update may be on the way. I know the initial reports on the new ABC logo said the owned stations would roll out new graphics. I wonder how soon that will happen. I also wonder how uniform they will be since ABC has traditionally given their owned stations more freedom than other O&O groups.

  32. So far, they have kept the graphics clean, with a narrow version of the TT Norms font for the Lower Thirds. As I can see on the KDKA version of the ticker bar, there is a modified version of the KDKA logo in between the time/temperature and ticker.

  34. Here's what has to be the earliest sighting of a 11pm newscast to use the "Eleven at 11:00" title: Some news teasers and previews for WGHPiedmont News on July 8, 1989.

  35. RIP Willard Scott. A lot could be said about just his tenure on TODAY, let alone his other roles (co-hosting Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, his work in Washington prior to getting called up to the network, being the original Ronald McDonald when the character was created for the D.C. area) Loved Al Roker's tribute to Willard describing him as being like a second father.

  36. KDKA renamed their newscast to "Your Day Pittsburgh", but I'm not sure exactly when that happened.
