  2. It wasn't quite the takedown the screaming headline implied. It was more nuanced than I expected.

  3. Damn! 11 discrimination complaints at WKYC alone? And 9 at WTSP? What is up there and how is management still there? Also ... I definitely don’t think we should identify these folks ... but regulars on this board can probably figure out at least some of the people they talked to. There were 2 I figured out based upon circumstances that were previously published.

  6. Whether you appreciate it or not your smug know it all attitude isn’t really welcome. Knock it off. I would try to rebut this but why bother? It’s not like you politely listen anyways.

  7. What's going to be really interesting is how Tegna itself reacts to this. By Kim making this move that just opened up a can of worms for both sides. We'll just have to see what happens with this one.

  8. If that is not bad enough, there are also 5 discrimination complaints at WTLV in Jacksonville, and 3 at KTHV in Little Rock, too.....

  11. I hope nobody’s posted these yet Some great views of 1990s WNYT, complete with glimpses of Ed Dague, Chris Jansing, Norm Sebastian, and Mark Mullholland back when he was a lowly sports reporter. Skip to 6:47 for a great promo featuring Phil Bayly and his awesome pedo mustache

  12. Another freshy uploaded WMAQ clip, this time the 10 p.m. news from 1982. The station was still using the NewsCenter 5 branding in the open -- but, as you can see here, it was already being phased out, with even the lower-thirds referring to Channel 5 News:

  16. Man, who could forget what happened in Denver 25 YEARS AGO? FALL 1995...That was the time Mile High City Television (matter of fact TV in ALL of Colorado) had changed forever. 9 became 4 of course. As you see here, NBC had moved from KCNC to KUSA. 4 became 7, because CBS moved from KMGH to KCNC. 7 became 9 because ABC moved from KUSA to KMGH. Indeed it was confusing, but it grew on some of us. Along with the switch came changes in partner stations, especially in Colorado Springs. KOAA was a partner station to KCNC, seeing that they were both NBC affiliates. After the switch KOAA's partner station became KUSA. KRDO was partner station to KUSA, because both were ABC affiliates. But KRDO's partner station became KMGH and it still is today. KKTV and KMGH were partner stations (both were CBS affiliates), but now, KKTV's partner station is KCNC. See how the BIG SWITCH not only affected Denver stations? ALL of Colorado TV changed forever

  18. Another informative read about WMAQ's Springer/Marin/Magers fiasco: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1997-05-18-9705180136-story.html Following the turmoil of May 1997, WMAQ adopted a new name for its newscast in June -- NewsChannel 5. Clips from that era are rare on YT, but here's an almost complete (delayed) 10 p.m. newscast from 1998:

  19. Continuing with Carol Marin's archives, here's her appearance on-set with Dan Rather on 9/11, plus reports from the following days. She's clearly in shock in that first spot. And then there's this. Carol was interviewed on many broadcasts, post-resignation, Good Morning America Sunday with Bill Ritter, followed by CNN's Reliable Sources, and Tom Snyder's Late Late Show.

  20. That Vimeo channel is a great find. Among the uploads so far is another farewell by Carol Marin -- the final edition of her 10 p.m. WBBM newscast, an ill-fated experiment from 2000 intended to bring more in-depth, issue-focused reporting to commercial television. You'll find her concluding remarks at the 29:35 mark:

  21. Probably not going to be all that interesting. I know it's fun to rip on TEGNA, and they deserve it for any number of things, but seriously if you open the books on ANY broadcast company, you'll find these exact same problems. I also know we like to imagine that the mom-and-pop-owned Dispatch stations were a haven before TEGNA, but this behavior didn't happen overnight once new ownership came on board. Every single local station I ever worked for had issues like these. You can trace back a lot of those discrimination complaints, like at WTSP for example, to the Joel Cheetwood-era of getting local management to fire all of their expensive legacy talent for much, much cheaper younger talent.
