  1. MeTV has been on a roll. They've been consistent in getting top-notch shows, they produce a late-night movie show, and they've even added a classic cartoon block with Warner Bros. and MGM shorts, something I don't think anyone was expecting. I can see them coming out just fine. After all, Weigel's been adamant about expanding their reach, and they've been buying stations in markets beyond the Great Lakes region they'd long restricted themselves to as a means to that end. That MeTV's been doing well in certain demos doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of their programming doesn't really have any equivalents on other OTA networks, even the Big 5, and they just know how to pick the best shows.

  5. I know Focus on the Family has their radio commentaries...but I never knew they did offer their TV commentaries to anyone to air outside religious stations and WBKB took them!

  6. Even though my time at YouTube seems to be over, keep in mind that Pepsi9072 (Eric) has been posting selected videos from my collection to YT so at least the memories can return. Also, through a magical method that I cannot disclose, I have been able to upload a few things to the project he manages. It's called "The AVTB Archives". Keep in mind, I cannot disclose anything about how Eric was able to get me this privilege, but it means about twice a week I can post commercials and newscasts from my collection back to YouTube via AVTB. So, a small win I guess?

  7. WBKB-TV 11, the CBS/Fox/ABC affiliate out of Alpena, Michigan is a textbook example of a small-market station with a low-budget setup compared to other stations in neighboring media markets...

  9. It is a CBS test pattern. WCIA (which streams most of the CBS' special reports on its YouTube channel) had a stream of CBS' coverage of Trump's second impeachment trial and after the coverage ended, they kept the stream going for a few more minutes, and it displayed the same test pattern. In this case, KXJB probably accidentally switched to the network feed when they intended to air Jeopardy.

  10. Does Fox care (at least in my view) that have a brand confusion issue? The news division casting a shadow over the entire entity. WFXT "Fox 25" in Boston even went as far as to rename themselves "Boston 25" to escape the Fox News associated conservative bias misidentification from viewers.

  12. Man, who could forget what happened in Denver 25 YEARS AGO? FALL 1995...That was the time Mile High City Television (matter of fact TV in ALL of Colorado) had changed forever. 9 became 4 of course. As you see here, NBC had moved from KCNC to KUSA. 4 became 7, because CBS moved from KMGH to KCNC. 7 became 9 because ABC moved from KUSA to KMGH. Indeed it was confusing, but it grew on some of us. Along with the switch came changes in partner stations, especially in Colorado Springs. KOAA was a partner station to KCNC, seeing that they were both NBC affiliates. After the switch KOAA's partner station became KUSA. KRDO was partner station to KUSA, because both were ABC affiliates. But KRDO's partner station became KMGH and it still is today. KKTV and KMGH were partner stations (both were CBS affiliates), but now, KKTV's partner station is KCNC. See how the BIG SWITCH not only affected Denver stations? ALL of Colorado TV changed forever

  13. For the record, here's that newscast, with the introduction to Springer's commentary beginning at the 13:30 mark: Ron Magers would anchor his last newscast two weeks later. Here's more on the events from that May on the website set up many years ago by former WMAQ reporter Rich Samuels: https://richsamuels.com/nbcmm/era.html

  15. Exactly. Out of ALL the stations that gained big 3 affiliations after the Fox switcheroo, WDJT has been among the best. They could be so much cheaper than they are. What's the reason for being hard on them?

  16. Really, does it need to be phrased so negatively here? They're in my market and they could be a lot worse, like WGCL worse or WWJ-TV non-existent, and they have management which is willing to spend. And when WTMJ is in the market continuing to drag it down, I'd rather watch a great fourth-place news operation trying hard than a third-place one we know can do 250% better (and has). They got to 25 years; there were times we were praying they got to 10 or even five, so it's a major accomplishment to me.

  17. That Vimeo channel is a great find. Among the uploads so far is another farewell by Carol Marin -- the final edition of her 10 p.m. WBBM newscast, an ill-fated experiment from 2000 intended to bring more in-depth, issue-focused reporting to commercial television. You'll find her concluding remarks at the 29:35 mark:

  18. And the Ron-a-thon continues, with Carol Marin's farewell speech, as she (and later Magers) famously left WMAQ in protest (May 1997). This Vimeo channel has digitized much of Carol's personal archives, and is on a bit of a posting spree this week.

  19. This was posted here many years ago, but since we're on the subject of Ron Magers' early Chicago career, it's perhaps worth revisiting... KTCA, the PBS station in the Twin Cities, aired a long, thoughtful report about Magers several months after he had moved from KSTP to WMAQ:

  20. An update on WSB Action News anchor Jovita Moore. She is recovering after undergoing surgery for brain tumors this morning. Jovita's surgery went well and doctors say she is a model patient. If you want to leave well wishes to Jovita, please visit the special page devoted to Jovita on the station's website. Thoughts and prayers are with you Jovita. Go with God, and he'll go with you in the power of prayer. https://www.wsbtv.com/jovita/

  21. I have a ton of articles saved from that time, but they're not too handy right now. Ron and Max were the main 10pm team (possibly at 4:30, but the newcomer was off half the time, anyway), but it didn't last even a year. Max's report card basically said "does not play well with others." He brought his wounded, yet still inflated network ego to a perennial 3rd place station. After Robinson's quick exit, Magers would find respectability and SLIGHTLY higher ratings with Carol Marin & Deborah Norville. If you or anyone else has any other questions about the history of Chicago news, feel free to message me. I've done a ton of casual research.

  22. That's a great find! And since the article mentions former World News Tonight co-anchor Max Robinson, are there any clips from his WMAQ stint available online? I don't remember ever seeing any. And does anyone know how he and Magers ended up dividing their shifts?

  23. Not just later that year, she left just a month after this broadcast. And while they never permanently anchored a show together at WLS, this is from their final show together in 2016, just months before both retired.

  27. I am. And of course, as y'all know, YouTube not only took down that channel for three strikes but decided to make me as miserable as possible, yanking the rest of my channels the night after that. So everything is up to Archive, until I get the appeal verdict back on channels '3' and '4'...the only two that can be saved as the original VHSgoodies is gone for good. The Jenny Jones clips were on channel '3' IIRC. The 1992 episode came from KIVI Boise, and I had some '93 clips from KNDO...

  32. hour long version of NewsNation...That's what I said! I said it before and I'll say it again. How about an hour-long version of NewsNation? Or, even a half-hour version? Air that version on Nexstar-owned FOX, CW and MNTV affiliates that DON'T HAVE a national nightly newscast. It would be like the days of the Independent Network News. Produced by WPIX New York, and distributed to independent stations without a national newscast, even indies owned by Tribune back then.
