  1. I agree. For CBS News, I think this is an upgrade for their on-air look and feel. In my opinion, NBC News normally has an edge in graphics presentation. Their look tends to be more cohesive and refined than the others. However, I think that this CBS open has better production values than the odd piece-by-piece overhaul of NBC Nightly News.

  2. It isn't necessarily of "national significance", but it is a story that directly targets the emotional appeal of what you'll typically see in local news... now in a national package like NewsNation. Remember, Nexstar's NewsNation is developed to be a national newscast with local interests and these local stories directly play into that idea given the context and the audience of the program. NewsNation isn't going to be the place to find hard news and analysis about America's debt for 3 hours straight, but you will see softer stories that highlight the unique regional fabric of the United States without the whole "doom & gloom" fare and could be of interest to a national audience, despite not being immediately relevant to your area. Let me copy-paste my post from the Discord server that explained my point that, besides journalistic directions, NewsNation shouldn't be compared 1-to-1 to Smith's program, which focuses on general national subjects like politics and the economy. I also delved into "day one" reactions from some members as well:

  4. I don't know if this one has been mentioned yet. Interesting take on Tegna graphics.

  6. That looks alright. Probably the most “modern” CBS News has looked in a very, very long time.

  7. WGNO was coming in tonight....so i'm giving it a watch and seeing how it compares with WKRN's version of the KOIN package. Overall, I like the WKRN implementation more. The only thing I would say is to use the coloring that WGNO uses on their main supers for WKRN. The purple(ish) ticker on WGNO DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. Either do the whole package in Mardi gras colors or don't do it at all. It looks like a sore thumb when combined with the graphics in the primary colors. Reading back through this thread, the original KOIN version has that turquoise-ish shade of blue, and subsequent launches have opted for either a navy or lighter shade of blue. I don't know if there's a "safety tab" on these graphics, it looks like there is dead space to the right of the words, maybe it's a trigger if more characters are needed, and if the max is reached, the "auto-stretch" kicks in? But that's a producer thing, so their supers aren't too long. It's like the newspaper headline of this century. Short and effective supers. And since the package sort of has the Tegna-vibe to it, is this the way that WGNO is trying to out-WWL....WWL? At least this comparision can't be made in Nashville since they don't have a Tegna station.

  9. Yeah, it’s fun to speculate about such things. But Norah is not going anywhere. I haven’t watched the CBS Evening News with any regularity since Bob Schieffer retired.

  10. No. You can still be creative while expressing today's design languages. Having 3D elements doesn't make it a guarantee that it'll be "creative" if one doesn't understand how its supposed to work with the design.
