  1. There’s no way he’s #2 for long.

  2. Actually I don't see the Nexstar NBC package coming to KFOR. I imagine that either KFOR is going to get the variant of the KOIN pkg that WKRN will be getting October 1 or, they may wait until the localized version of the Graphics that will be used on NewsNation starts to get rolled out to to the stations (and that'll be awhile before that happens)

  3. I couldn't agree more, the CBS News devision needs a complete reinvention. I know the idea of moving the Evening News isn't a popular one but I really think CBS should move it to 10pm for every timezone (11pm for some stations), rebrand it as the CBS National News or keep it as the Evening News branding if you want, but mainly follow the BBC format of serious stories and a strong world focus. The main thing I would incorporate from the BBC is the rotating anchor format and I would have the broadcast originate live for all timezones, New York or D.C. would handle the Eastern and Central timezones and Los Angeles would cover the Mountain and Pacific timezones, I know that would add an extra cost but it would make sense with it being on later and being live so the stories are current. Late local news would be on immediately after at 10:30 (or 11:30), and the affiliates would get an extra half hour at 5:30 / 6:30 or whenever they air the evening news which would make up for the late news being on later. I don't know what they'd do on the weekends especially on nights with sports but they could figure something out, something like a 15 min broadcast on weekends would work since sports normally goes longer than expected delaying local news. In terms of Norah, I really liked her on CTM but have absolutely hate her on the evening news, it seems so forced and manufactured. The "breaking news" for everything is out of control. I grew up watching Katie and later Scott, on his last night I was holding in tears as he said goodbye, he ignited my passion for journalism and CBS hasn't been the same since he was forced out, Jeff grew on me and stared to find his groove when they got rid of him. In true CBS fashion Norah will be gone within 2 years from now and they'll be stuck again. Its kinda sad how they are the most watched network but in dead last place when it comes to news, they need to find a way to keep those viewers for network newscasts and that's why I really think the success of their primetime line up could be a great lead in and give CBS success at 10pm / 11pm. I know many of you don't like the idea and will bring up ad revenue, local stations, ownership groups and all kinds of other stuff but seriously, its worth a shot, they don't have much to lose at this point. The affiliates would get over it, adapt and benefit from an extra 30 min in the evening and could benefit from a strong lead in to late local news (yes I know they already have one from primetime). Local stations could even keep a news at 10pm / 11pm just on a sub channel or streaming online / CBSN local if they really wanted to keep that broadcast. We can respectfully talk about this if anyone wishes to as long as we don't bash the idea or me.

  4. I'm sure Cowles would find it much easier to have ABC/FOX throughout the entire state, but they're not touching KSVI/KHMT. Billings sits at the base of the Rimrocks, which run along the city's eastern border. Both KULR and KTVQ have their towers on top of the Rimrocks, as close to the edge as possible. It's the only way you can actually see the entire city. KSVI and KHMT share a tower, which would be okay except that KHMT is licensed to Hardin, MT, 45 miles east of Billings. The only way you can run both stations on the same stick, while legally covering both Billings and Hardin is to be farther away from the edge of the Rimrocks. In the case of KSVI/KHMT, the tower is 10 miles east of the edge. Since the tower can't see most of Billings, the signal simply flies over the city. KSVI/KHMT have to run multiple translators to fill in the gaps. Since the FCC is unlikely to ever allow KHMT to change its city of license from Hardin to Billings, this is always going to be an issue. That's why Cowles is not going to trade one very good station for two bad stations.

  5. Glor getting shoved out will always leave a bad taste in my mouth. No Anchor is going to have immediate clout, and I felt like Glor and the show were finally in a good rhythm when they pulled the plug. The rapid fire switch from Glor to O'Donnell seemed rushed and ill informed. The move to DC, while it had good intentions, was a waste of money IMO. I like O'Donnell, and always enjoyed her on CBS This Morning, but her reads on the Evening News always feel forced and not genuine. And for GODS SAKE, every newscast does not need to start with "Breaking News." The industry needs to have a serious discussion about that crap, because something that happened 14 hours ago, or has been happening since march, is not "Breaking."

  6. Umm... what?! You freaking serious? Show that to FTVLive so that people can read it and ridicule the company. They deserve all the ridicule and hatred they get. Also, it does mention Maria Athens a few times. What is she like, the co-owner of the company or something? Good grief.

  7. Not to mention the guys who run that are straight up jerks! Before I got let go due to "Newsroom Restructuring", this email was sent to us from a former reporter in Alaska.

  8. Nexstar isn't touching those stations with a hundred foot pole. They will never have a chance against KTUU/KYES because the few people who advertise up there aren't going to put their ads on a duopoly that gets virtually no viewership. You know why Nexstar has KSVI/KHMT? They never really wanted it, but it was part of the Quorum package, so they had to take it. They have tried to sell those stations, but no one wants to buy the third and fourth stations in a two station market. It's the same fact in Anchorage. If GCI's cable leverage and multi million dollar investment couldn't dent Gray and KTUU, nothing will.

  9. No matter what sort of regulatory gymnastics they're doing here, this is bad news for KTVA. GCI had deep pockets and basically handed KTVA a blank check to run their news department. It is/was a quality operation. At one point, I believe they had two helicopters and an airplane in order to cover the state. They also used to still send reporters on location to places far outside of the market. Seems like the writing's on the wall that deep cuts are ahead.

  10. Getting lost in all of this: A couple of alarm bells about the health of some of the media companies in smaller markets. 1) GCI is *the* cable company in Alaska. They provide telcom and other services to a vast majority of the state's residents. They should have the cash flow to continue operations... 2) ...Especially when you consider that GCI is a subsidiary of what was formerly known as Liberty Interactive--of John Malone/Liberty Media. GCI should be healthy enough to own television stations in general, let alone a competing, news producing station in the market. So what's changed where they're tossing it all?
