  1. WTMJ is in bad need of a new set (or at least a major refresh), especially since they started wallpapering it and removing duratrans, leaving the LED back lighting exposed (behind the plexi on either side of the desk). They now have the oldest set in the market, and both WITI and WDJT have essentially received two new sets in the period that WTMJ set has been up. My fear is, since their studio is round, they'll be convinced that the best use of the space is a green wall and floor.

  2. If anyone ever thought combining that god-awful C-Clarity with the WNEP National Anthem was possible.... You're welcome. mctyw tegna_mixdown.mp4

  3. Small point: WOUB's TV studios are on the 5th floor (the grid extends up to the 6th.) They definitely have a tradition of recycling. I know during my time there (back in the dawn of time), they reused WBNS Columbus's old set.

  4. And then there's... The News? What year is it, KGGM? (By year's end they were KRQE)

  7. Actually I beg to differ at the 28:02 mark https://tcmedianow.com/wusa-kare-july-16-1985-6pm-star-game-coverage/ Although I remember this theme very well. It was first used on channel 9 in Denver (KBTV/KUSA) during its ABC affiliate days. Mike Landess and Ed Sardella delivered the news, Stormy Rottman and Bill Kuster did weather, and Mike Nolan did sports. I especially love the KUSA 9 Country News Opens, which featured the golden pipes of Mr. ABC himself Ernie Anderson.

  8. I am so happy to see Kristen Welker promoted to Weekend Today, it may not seem like much but hopefully this promotion will have a ripple effect in changing the Today show to focus more on promoting hard news journalists to these spots then getting these fluff no experience people to these jobs. The Today show lost their momentum for a long time cause they kept on promoting fluff no hard news experienced people to these jobs and it watered down the product and lowered the morale. They are losing their viewership year by year as cable news like Fox and MSNBC continue to grow in viewership. It should be an indicator that hard news/informative content sells and what matters then a lot of this entertainment fluff in the morning. Congrats to Kirsten and I may watch Weekend Today the first time in a long time since Lester Holt's promotion to Nightly News/

  9. There really aren’t must runs like Sinclair or Nexstar. They just have the DC reports, National Investigations (which isn’t often) and now Rossen Reports (which appear to be really short <1 minute).

  10. Replace the font in that logo with Proxima Nova, and that would look exactly like something from a Tegna station. (Ironically, Scripps did say they wanted a "Tegna Lite" look)

  12. Watching these debut on the larger markets, I think I know what the problem is with the new look: It clashes with all the other production elements inside the newscast. On WFTS and KNXV the big problem is seeing the flat look against very complex set elements, physical AND virtual. It doesn't match. In the case of WFTS, it doesn't even match the station brand. They've built up ABC Action News now for almost 20 years, this feels completely antithetical to the brand, and in that particular station's case, they know it because they're trying to use more complex animations and somewhat harder cuts of music on air. Really, there needed to be set changes across the board to something that matched the look--something that complements the clean message the look's trying to convey. Video walls alone can't do that. Meanwhile, at WTXL or KXXV, it feels a bit more in line, because the newscast pacing is a bit slower, sleepier, and not over the top. That's where this look is going to work best: In the smaller and more traditional news focused markets. But Detroit? Nashville? Cleveland? Denver? Vegas? Maybe even home base in Cincy? Look out!

  13. So they can put the logo in a box during the tease... this is the payoff for all the small ball executive hires to oversee their news operations as a group...

  14. Digging around online, it looks like the two story building the fire happened in was originally built in the 50's for KCRA radio. It's so disconnected from the "new" part of the building I can see why it's been abandoned. https://www.valcomnews.com/kcra-channel-3-first-aired-nearly-six-decades-ago/ The biggest loss here is a place I'm sure the engineers and IT people loved to hide.

  15. You could always DVR and watch it later, back in my morning tv obsessed youth I would record GMA and Today and watch when I got home from school lol. I rarely make the effort to turn the shows on today because the content is so mind numbing.

  17. Oh, come on. There are more options here than "stay-at-home moms" and people in assisted living/nursing homes. There are: Retired people People who work non-"standard" hours and are thus free to have the TV on in the mornings if they're awake People who work from home and are thus also free to have the TV on Stay-at-home dads And those are just the ones I can think of.

  19. Someone awhile back said they were surprised that Al is still on this show. Honestly, I am not. The person who I am most surprise that has lasted is Carson Daly. He been on the show fo six years now (which I didn't realize until today tha it been that long) and does not seem like he will be leaving anytime soon (which is part of why I think he left his late night show) but I will say he has grown into his role on the show very well. I know at the time lot o people has skepticism but he has turned out to be solid addition in the long run I think.

  23. So they essentially demoted Justin for someone who, while very accomplished, is a WSB newbie. That’s atypical for them. They usually groom folks for years and promote from within. I guess it’s possible Justin wanted it, but it seems like he would’ve announced he was stepping back to spend more time with family or whatever if that was the case.
