  1. Just seems like you’re always hating on Norah and praising Jeff. Yes, CBS has been in last place for 35 years, but it’s not always the anchors fault. How do you feel she’s weak? Please elaborate. Who are the other qualified people at CBS that should have gotten the position? Keep in mind, star power is also important in addition to strong journalism skills.

  2. I'd love to see ABC go back to having that background, it'd actually be a nice tribute to Peter Jennings where throughout most of his run as anchor of World News Tonight it was done that way. But I highly doubt they'll bring it back, it's nice to think and dream about though.

  3. All I will say is CBS Evening News asked for this ratings drop to happen. The ingracious manner that they dumped Jeff Glor was repulsive, who although may not have the same gravitas as Cronkite or Rather, demonstrated impartiality in his reporting and was very talented. He was one of the few that just anchored the newscast, like old school style. No opinions from him. Just the facts and let the audience decide. They should've stayed with Glor for the long-haul. Yet the ingracious manner they dumped Glor was contrasted by how, on his final night, he decided to honor the people behind the scenes. He could've used that final segment to be about him, but instead he shined the spotlight on the team rarely (if ever) seen on air. That speaks volumes about his character. It's CBSEN's loss that they dumped him. I won't get into my personal opinions about Norah, but she is not exactly impartial on the air, which is a problem for CBSEN recovering its reputation and ratings. And deciding to move to DC was about as tone-deaf as anything. They should instead be working to re-build their credibility, which may take years to achieve. Getting to say you're live from Washington in a nice studio says nothing about your actual journalism and content. True that this ratings problem started decades ago, but CBS has the ability to do better. They just have to choose to do better.

  4. She's the least natural presenter of the 3 evening news anchors, her delivery always comes off a super try hard anchor woman even when she was on the morning show and her interviewing style is overly combative. I hardly find her reputable or personable. Scott Pelley, Anthony Mason, Margaret Brennan, John Dickerson, Don Dahler, possibly Major Garrett and Bob Schieffer. Doesn't CBS also have a deal with CNN, there are a number of talented CNN presenters that I would put ahead of Norah. Sorry to upset you or your opinion, I just think she was one of the weakest choices any of the networks have made in anchor in quite some time. Even Katie Couric made more sense. Norah's delivery is more suited for FTN than any other CBS broadcast. Her star power has done nothing to elevate the show and she was quite possibly the weakest of that CtM bunch after Gayle and Charlie. David Muir wasn't necessarily the most popular ABC News personality but he made sense and look where his broadcast is at, averaging almost 4-5x Norah's.

  5. Never remember seeing a headline like that under Jeff Glor.

  7. 1000% agreed. I'll just say that if Tegna had any brains and ANY resemblence of common sense, we wouldn't see stations like WFAA, and WWL fall off the way they have (sure WFAA in the November sweeps are #1 at 6/10 but WFAA is no longer the dominating force it once was). Also we wouldn't see names like H-Town Rush, etc. And finally, Tegna could've done better with the usage of C Clarity, instead they chose to not only go with pure garbage but in the process destroy stations that was likeable, had personally, also had resemblence of common sense. One more thing, (and this is sort of off-topic but is still on topic since we're talking about Tegna) the whole KTHV "Wake Up Central" thing is just absolutely ridiculous but, what else do you expect out of Tegna.

  8. You missed my point. I was trying to say that you have packages that were created using actual musical talent. C Clarity has nothing of actual music. I tend to think of C Clarity as "noise", instead of news music. It's full of emotion but little or no substance on most cuts. As for your point about my aforementioned music pkgs mostly not used anymore, the stations still use an assortment of music pkgs that sound nothing like that "noise." And I'll also add that stations in the Top-5 markets set the standard for the industry, not the other way around. If they had kept "This Is Home" with the new gfx, I wouldn't be quite as repulsed by the Tegna branding--notwithstanding the ridiculous show brands they've debuted (H Town Rush, Wake Up ____, etc.) I'm a 20-something guy, and the way Tegna thinks my generation wants forced ingenuine shows that are irrelevant is not smart. If I'm taking time to watch a newscast, I want a newscast with real substance. And I'm saying that being as tech-savvy as anyone my age.

  9. Providence, RI is NOT a sub 100 market (they're in DMA #53).

  10. I respectfully disagree, just because the Evening News is #1 in places like Pittsburgh and the Twin Cities does NOT mean that it's #1 everywhere else. When a Cable News Show beats a national network newscast on a local station in more than just one market, clearly there's a big problem (as is the case with Norah)

  11. I've been meaning to say this for a while now: There are many things to argue about with these station groups: inherent editorial biases, incompetent newsrooms/production, even graphical presentation can be considered. But if you're simply griping about news music -- arguably about a total of 30 seconds to 1 minute of a 30-minute broadcast -- you're overreacting. Now while C Clarity is not a traditional "news" package, but it's not a bad package by any stretch of the imagination. Granted those longer lived packages are synonymous with the stations they are with, they are aged DO age, and they show their age. The music is fine. It's just modern, and everyone loves to hate anything modern. Just imagine if everyone was still using the music they used in 1970 -- every market would be suffering with a WJZ 1987 - 2017. sound. As an aside: NONE of those packages you mention are widely used: Signature is in use by six stations nationwide, all in sub-100 TV markets, Primetime News is used by one broadcast and a handful of cable stations, and we all know who uses MCTYW. Eyewitness News is the exception, which most likely occurs because it's a staple in the three largest markets in the country on stations O&O'd by The Mouse, except of course the one who uses MCTYW and that weird Fresno market . The ONLY other broadcast stations still using EWN are WLNE Providence, WJRT Flint, WBAY Green Bay and also a handful of sub-100 DMA stations.

  12. Not a fan of the bubble. Seriously, in addition to these blue-white minimalist tones, it seems like they are mocking up a "Facebook" graphics theme. All they need are the hearts, thumbs ups and emojis to pop up on the screen.

  13. There’s something to be said for a newsroom right behind the anchor instead... I missed a call from the 90’s and they may be trying to get me back though...

  14. That’s because Glor was a lower profile anchor. Give it a rest, he was not CBS’s saving grace either. His prime in popularity passed a while ago.

  15. Wouldn't they need a seperate set to make a South Bend-produced WXLV newscast work, especially if there are any WNWO newscasts live at the same time?

  18. From what I could tell on the West Mass News Open vs the WABC open, the color scheme looks very the same as WABC but obviously the way WABC did the open is totally different compared to what Western Mass News did. A good example of that would the way the animations of the graphics is done at WGGB vs the way WABC does theirs. My conclusion is that yes it's syndicated but because of the way the color scheme looks the boxes are used for one third of the screen in the beginning the news open, you could say it's a ripoff but I'd say its 50/50

  24. Believe it or not, WBRE/WYOU is the only legacy Nexstar news operation takes the simulcast approach. And before you say KSNT/KTKA, that was done in the New Vision days and carried over into LIN, Media General, and now Nexstar. Most news ops like WKBN/WYTV, KODE/KSNF, KRBC/KTAB, etc actually air two SEPERATE newscasts but use the same reporters. Therefore, KWGN and KDVR could maintain seperate branding for a long, long time.

  25. Many of Tegna's NBC affiliates have aired an overnight rerun of Nightly News since 2015. Variety has been on this since the practice started. Below is a link to article from November mentioning how the evening network newscasts are spreading to non-traditional timeslots in an attempt to squeeze out higher ratings. https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/evening-news-tv-ratings-david-muir-lester-holt-norah-odonnell-1203400113/

  27. I think my biggest problem with these graphics is that the lower thirds are using the old Facebook logo that was replaced months ago. Dear Scripps Graphics Hub: The Facebook app logo is now circular. Everyone wanted Scripps to get new graphics. Well, here you go. This is the style that's popular right now. I wouldn't expect many changes to these as it rolls out across the rest of their stations.

  28. A few weeks ago, KIII's (Corpus Christi) Chief Meteorologist, Bill Vessey, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. An interview on last night's 10 PM news showed him up and about with the help of a walker. He seemed to be in good spirits, and his speech was clear. He continues to work on building the strength in his right arm and leg, but he was able to give the reporter a hearty handshake.

  29. Meanwhile the layoffs at Nexstar continue to pile up, this time around it's in Kansas City with WDAF. 10 people at WDAF including an Editor who has been on their morning newscast for years and reporter Ashonti Ford (who left the station late last month after joining WDAF this past August) Hopefully @TheRob is okay and his position didn't get axed
